Camping near Bass Lake, Indiana
Bass Lake sits in Starke County in northwestern Indiana, roughly halfway between South Bend and Lafayette. It is one of the state's largest natural lakes, ringed by cottages, small resorts, and a state beach on the south shore. The surrounding landscape is flat farm country broken by the Tippecanoe River corridor and stands of oak and pine, which sets the tone for most camping in the area.
RV renters have a mix of options within a short drive. Rising Sun Campground and Tippecanoe River Run offer private-park amenities close to the water, while Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort focuses on family programming with pools and organized activities. For a more traditional public-land experience, Horsemens Camp at Tippecanoe River State Park provides wooded sites along the river.
Most sites in the region accommodate travel trailers and Class C motorhomes, with a smaller subset able to handle larger Class A rigs. Cell coverage is generally reliable, and Knox and Winamac supply groceries, fuel, and dump-station services.
Things to do around Bass Lake
The lake itself drives most of the recreation. Boating, jet skiing, and fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish are the main draws, and the public beach on the south shore is a straightforward stop for families with kids. Kayaks and paddleboards launch easily from several access points.
Tippecanoe River State Park adds paddling, hiking, and horseback trails along a quiet stretch of the Tippecanoe. Canoe liveries in Winamac shuttle floats of varying lengths, and the park's nature center runs interpretive programs in summer.
Off the water, Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area is a short drive south and hosts the sandhill crane migration each fall. Knox and Winamac offer small-town diners, farm stands, and weekend festivals through the warm season.

The camping season in this part of Indiana runs from mid-April through late October. Spring brings variable weather, muddy trails, and rising river levels on the Tippecanoe, but campgrounds are quieter and reservations are easier to secure. Bugs pick up in late May.
Summer is peak. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill quickly at both private parks and Tippecanoe River State Park, with holiday weekends often booked months ahead. Daytime highs typically sit in the low 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is noticeable, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Lake water is warm enough for swimming from mid-June through August.
Fall delivers the most reliable weather. Days are cool and clear through September and early October, insect pressure drops, and hardwoods along the river color up in mid to late October. Winter camping is limited: Indiana State Parks keep some sites open year-round with reduced services, while most private parks close by early November and reopen in April.
How to book a site
Sites at Tippecanoe River State Park, including Horsemens Camp, are reserved through the Indiana State Parks reservation system operated by ReserveAmerica. The booking window opens six months in advance on a rolling daily basis, and popular summer weekends are typically claimed the morning they open.
Private parks around Bass Lake handle their own reservations. Rising Sun Campground, Tippecanoe River Run, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort each take bookings directly through their websites or by phone, with Jellystone often requiring longer minimum stays on holiday weekends.
RV renters should confirm site length, hookup type, and slide-out clearance before booking. A shorter mid-week stay is the easiest way into the area during July and August if weekends are full.
What to expect on the ground
Sites at Tippecanoe River State Park are wooded and spaced for privacy, with electric hookups at most modern sites and a central dump station rather than full hookups. The camp store is limited, so groceries and firewood are best sourced in Winamac before arrival. Indiana requires firewood to be from certified heat-treated sources or purchased locally.
Private parks near Bass Lake generally offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Jellystone-branded resorts run structured activity schedules that appeal to families with younger children, while smaller parks lean quieter.
Roads in are paved and passable for any rental size, though some private-park interior loops are gravel and tight. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late May through September, so bring repellent and check for ticks after hikes.

Travel trailers typically run $80 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches can reach $300 or more. Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Bass Lake. Indiana does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes and travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every RV on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, no paperwork to mail or notarize. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly in. Most first-time guests are surprised how quick the verification step is, often done in under five minutes from your phone.
in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/driver-licenses/Is an RV rental in Bass Lake protected if something goes wrong?
Every RV rental in Bass Lake booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pick up the keys. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage tier during checkout, the host does not set it. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it gives you real financial peace of mind whether you are towing back from Tippecanoe River State Park or parked lakeside at Bass Lake. Tip: review the protection tiers side-by-side at booking and choose the one that matches your comfort level, higher tiers reduce your out-of-pocket responsibility.

Yes, RVezy applies a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy to every booking, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your Bass Lake RV trip with confidence. Your refund outcome depends on how far in advance you cancel and whether a qualifying event applies. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you the slide-outs, awning, water systems, propane, and dash controls before you ever pull away. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. Pro tip: if you're nervous about towing or maneuvering, choose a Class B campervan or book a delivery-only listing and let the host park it for you at the campground.

RVezy's support team is also available before, during, and after your trip. Your host is typically just a text away too, and many Bass Lake area hosts live nearby and can troubleshoot smaller issues in person. Tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave, signal can get spotty in the Tippecanoe River bottomlands.

Tip: a 5-day loop from Bass Lake through the Indiana Dunes lakeshore and into southwest Michigan wine country is one of the most underrated Midwest RV routes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Bass Lake RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest expense after the rental itself, but it is manageable around Bass Lake. Class C motorhomes average roughly 8 to 10 MPG, Class A coaches 6 to 8 MPG, campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer about 10 to 12 MPG. Indiana gas prices typically run near or just below the national average, with stations in Knox, Winamac, and North Judson along US-35 offering easy big-rig access. For a 4-night, 200-mile round trip in a Class C, plan on roughly $80 to $120 in fuel depending on prices. Tip: fill up in Knox before heading out, smaller stations closer to the lake can run higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bass Lake?

Summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly, so check the National Weather Service forecast before long drives.
