Campgrounds and RV parks near Camden, IN

Family activity centers on Indiana Beach on Lake Shafer, an amusement resort with thrill rides, water slides, a boardwalk, and live music, plus boating and fishing on the lake itself. Guests staying at Indiana Beach / Monticello KOA Holiday are close to the park entrance and can plan day visits around the resort's operating schedule. Prophetstown State Park adds a different mix: paved bike and hiking paths through restored tallgrass prairie and wetlands, an aquatic center with a tube slide, lazy river, and zero-entry pool, and the adjacent Farm at Prophetstown living-history site. The Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum is about two miles from the park entrance, and Wolf Park is roughly five miles away. Purdue University, the Columbia Park Zoo, and Celery Bog Nature Area in Lafayette are all within a short drive for a rainy-day backup plan.

Peak RV season in this part of Indiana runs roughly April through October, and Prophetstown State Park itself stays open year round. Summer weekends fill quickly at both the state park and at Indiana Beach / Monticello KOA Holiday, so early booking matters. The state park's aquatic center and most Lake Shafer resort amenities operate through the warm-weather months, aligning with the amusement park's main run. Spring brings wildflowers on the Prophetstown prairie and mild days, but also the region's wettest stretch, with May and June the rainiest months. Trails can be muddy and river levels can rise quickly after storms. Fall cools off fast and brings clearer skies, quieter weekends, and better site availability. Winter camping is possible at Prophetstown, but reduced-amenity conditions apply from November through April at most Indiana state park properties, with water typically shut off and modern restrooms winterized. Snow and ice are common from December through March, and most private parks around Lake Shafer close for the season.

Prophetstown's campground is set in open prairie and a former Christmas tree planting rather than mature woods, so shade is limited on the prairie loop and best appreciated in spring and fall when temperatures are cooler. Sites are level with gravel pads, restrooms and shower houses are modern and ADA accessible, and cell reception can be spotty. Indiana state parks charge a per-vehicle gate fee that is separate from the campsite reservation, collected on first entry and valid for the rest of the stay. Pets must be on a leash of six feet or less and attended at all times. Quiet hours run from 11 PM to 7 AM, and generators are limited to 7 AM to 11 PM. The KOA on Lake Shafer is a busier, resort-style setup with a pool, playgrounds, and organized activities. Expect a lively, family-heavy atmosphere in July and August.
