Campgrounds near Chesterfield, Indiana
Chesterfield sits in Madison County in east-central Indiana, just off I-69 between Anderson and Muncie. The town borders Mounds State Park, which places an Indiana DNR campground within walking distance of the community and along the White River. Indianapolis is roughly 45 minutes to the southwest, making Chesterfield an easy weekend base for RV travelers coming out of central Indiana.
Camping options in the immediate area fall into three groups. State-park camping is centered on Mounds State Park, with electric sites operated by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Private RV parks in the corridor include Muncie RV Resort to the east, plus Mystic Waters Campground and Mystic Waters Outdoor Escape & Family Campground, which cater to families with amenities-heavy stays.
For event-driven trips, the Delaware County Indiana Fairgrounds in Muncie opens temporary RV camping during the county fair and larger shows. Together, these properties cover most trip styles, from a quick shake-down run to a longer family stay.
Things to do near Chesterfield
The headline attraction is Mounds State Park itself. The park protects ten prehistoric earthworks built by the Adena-Hopewell people, including the Great Mound, thought to date to roughly 160 B.C. Trails loop past the mounds and down to the White River, and the Nature Center runs naturalist programs and guided hikes for park visitors.
Beyond the park, the White River offers fishing (an Indiana license is required) and paddling access. Anderson Speedway hosts short-track racing in season, and regional wineries sit within a short drive.
For kids, Mystic Waters Outdoor Escape & Family Campground and similar private resorts run themed weekends, pools, and outdoor games that complement the hiking and history focus at the state park.

Mounds State Park is open year-round, and its campground stays open through all four seasons, though services tighten in winter. Most private RV parks in the corridor run a standard spring-through-fall season, with the busiest window running from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Weekends in June, July, and August fill first, especially shaded sites near the White River.
Spring brings wildflowers along the river trails and mild hiking weather, but also the year's wettest stretch, so expect muddy trails after storms. Summer is warm, humid, and prone to thunderstorms; biting insects are active near the water. Fall is the most comfortable stretch for RV travel, with cool nights, lower humidity, and foliage color through October.
Winter camping is possible at Mounds but limited to hardier travelers: expect freezing overnight lows, occasional snow, and reduced programming. Water is typically turned off from November through mid-March. Book shoulder-season dates for the widest site selection.

Booking and reservations
Mounds State Park campsites are reserved through the Indiana State Parks reservation system at camp.IN.gov, powered by ReserveAmerica, or by calling 1-866-622-6746. Reservations open up to six months in advance and can be made as late as arrival day, subject to availability. Holiday weekends and prime summer Saturdays routinely sell out, so booking early is strongly recommended, especially for the shaded loop sites and the limited number of pull-through sites suitable for larger rigs.
Private parks such as Muncie RV Resort, Mystic Waters Campground, and Mystic Waters Outdoor Escape & Family Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For event stays tied to the Delaware County Indiana Fairgrounds, reservations are handled by the fairgrounds office and are typically tied to the event schedule.
What to expect on arrival
At Mounds State Park, the family campground offers 75 sites, with 71 electric hookups on 30 and 50 amp service, water spigots shared across the loop, and a central dump station. Most sites are back-in; a smaller number of pull-throughs accommodate longer rigs, so travelers with larger RVs should confirm site length at booking. Restrooms with hot showers are on-site, and a small camp store carries basics and firewood. Quiet hours run from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and check-in is 2 p.m. (5 p.m. on Sundays and designated holidays).
Pets are welcome on a six-foot leash but are not allowed inside park buildings. A daily entrance fee applies per vehicle. Private RV parks in the corridor generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, and family amenities such as playgrounds, pools, and activity fields. Cell coverage across the area is reliable on major carriers.
