Campgrounds near Chesterton, Indiana
Chesterton sits at the doorstep of the Indiana Dunes, where Lake Michigan shoreline, wooded ridges, and sand dunes converge in northwest Indiana. The town is the primary staging point for RV trips to two overlapping public lands: Indiana Dunes State Park, which fronts the lake at the north end of town, and the surrounding Indiana Dunes National Park. Groceries, fuel, dump stations, and RV supplies are all available within a short drive.
RV renters have a mix of public and private options within roughly twenty minutes of downtown. Indiana Dunes State Park runs the main electric-hookup campground close to the beach, while Dunewood in the national park offers a quieter, non-electric alternative in the woods near Beverly Shores. Sand Creek Campground, Lakeshore Camp Resort, and Michigan City Campground fill out the private side with full-hookup sites.
Chicago is roughly an hour west by car, which makes the area busy on summer weekends. Booking well ahead is essential from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Things to do near Chesterton
The main draw is the Lake Michigan shoreline. Indiana Dunes State Park protects more than three miles of beach and includes Mt. Tom, the tallest dune in Indiana at 192 feet, reached via Trail 8 as part of the 3 Dune Challenge loop. The park's nature center covers local ecology and posts current ranger programs.
Indiana Dunes National Park adds beaches at West Beach and Mount Baldy, plus historic sites at the Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm. Mount Baldy access has been restricted at times for sand management work coordinated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so check current conditions before planning that stop.
Beyond the parks, downtown Chesterton has restaurants and a European market, and the South Shore Line offers direct rail access to Chicago from stations near the campgrounds.

Summer is peak season. Highs run in the low 80s from June through August, Lake Michigan is warm enough for swimming, and the campgrounds fill on most weekends. Expect full sun on the open dunes, so plan for water, sunscreen, and shade.
Spring and fall bring cooler, quieter conditions. September is noticeably less crowded on weekdays, and fall color through the oak and maple woods around Chellberg Farm typically peaks in October. Both shoulder seasons are good for hiking and cycling, though lake winds can be sharp.
Winters are cold and snowy, with lake-effect snow common along the shoreline. Indiana Dunes State Park stays open year-round and draws cross-country skiers in winter, but Dunewood Campground in the national park closes for the winter, generally operating from April into early November. Many private campgrounds also close or reduce services in winter, so confirm openings before booking a cold-weather trip.

How to book a campsite
Indiana Dunes State Park sites are reserved through the Indiana DNR system on Reserve America, or by phone. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance and must be made at least two days ahead of arrival. The campground has around 140 sites, most with electric hookups, plus tent-only and youth areas.
Dunewood Campground in Indiana Dunes National Park books through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window, with the following season's dates first released on November 15. Summer weekends often sell out within days of release.
Sand Creek Campground, Lakeshore Camp Resort, and Michigan City Campground handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For holiday weekends, book private sites as early in the year as possible.
What RV renters should expect
Indiana Dunes State Park offers electric hookups at every site (no water or sewer at individual sites), modern restrooms and shower houses, a dump station, and potable water, with the campground within walking distance of the beach and the South Shore rail station. Sites are relatively close together and the campground sees heavy RV traffic in summer.
Dunewood is different. It has 66 wooded and walk-in sites with no electric, water, or sewer at individual sites, but restrooms, showers, potable water, and a dump station are available on site. The beach is a short drive or a walk through Beverly Shores, and parking at access points can fill during peak season.
Private options such as Sand Creek Campground, Lakeshore Camp Resort, and Michigan City Campground generally provide full hookups and amenities more suited to larger rigs. Leashed dogs are allowed at most area campgrounds, with a six-foot leash limit at the state and national park sites.

How much does an RV rental in Chesterton cost?
Good news: RV rental in Chesterton is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan shoreline. On RVezy, you typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400, with hosts setting their own rates. For a cheap RV rental in Chesterton, book midweek stays in May or September when peak summer pricing eases. Pro tip: filter for travel trailers if you want delivery directly to Indiana Dunes State Park Campground, since the host handles setup and you skip towing costs entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chesterton%2C%20IndianaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Chesterton, Indiana?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular Indiana driver's license (or any valid US/Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Chesterton. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any motorhome or travel trailer on the RVezy platform, regardless of size. You just need to be an approved driver (generally 25 or older), and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking process so there is no paperwork at pickup. Visiting from overseas for an Indiana Dunes RV trip? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before you fly. Most renters are surprised how straightforward Indiana's rules are.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance or protection included when I book in Chesterton?
Yes, every RV rental in Chesterton booked through RVezy includes a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance automatically. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind whether you are driving along US-12 or parked at Dunewood Campground. During checkout, you choose between different coverage tiers so you can match the level of protection to your comfort and budget. This is added security alongside the included coverage, and it means you are not on the hook for the full value of the RV if something goes wrong. Lock in your tier at booking and head to the dunes worry-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Chesterton RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy on every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in that summer Indiana Dunes weekend with confidence. Cancellation outcomes depend on how far in advance of your trip you cancel, and there are additional protections for situations like severe weather (helpful in Northwest Indiana, where lake-effect storms can roll in fast). Because RVezy, not the individual host, manages the cancellation policy, you get consistent treatment across every listing. Full details are on the RVezy Help Center, and the support team is available if your plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Chesterton RV trip?
Absolutely. Many RVezy hosts in Northwest Indiana welcome pets, and you can find a pet-friendly RV rental in Chesterton simply by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page. Once you're rolling, your dog will love the Indiana Dunes: leashed pets are allowed on most trails in Indiana Dunes National Park and on the West Beach and Kemil Beach areas (with seasonal restrictions). Indiana Dunes State Park also has pet-friendly walking paths around the campground. Pro tip: bring a long lead and water bowl, and plan a morning visit to the Great Marsh Trail in Beverly Shores, which stays cooler and is a favorite for dogs.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Chesterton?
Yes, RV delivery in Chesterton is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for travel trailers and fifth wheels. Many hosts will tow the RV directly to your site at Indiana Dunes State Park Campground (1600 N 25 E, Chesterton), Dunewood Campground in Beverly Shores, or Sand Creek Campground in Chesterton, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. That means you can fly into Chicago O'Hare or Midway, take the South Shore Line train, and meet your fully set-up RV at the campground. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts offering this service, plus any per-mile delivery fee.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/indiana-dunes-state-park/How far can I drive from Chesterton on an RV trip?

Check the listing details before booking, or message the host directly to confirm a mileage package that fits your route.

in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/indiana-dunes-state-park/When is the best time for an Indiana Dunes RV trip from Chesterton?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping in Chesterton, with summer highs in the low 80s F and Lake Michigan finally swimmable by July. June and September are the sweet spots: warm days, cool nights in the low 60s, fewer crowds, and lower nightly rates. Fall (mid-September to late October) brings spectacular maple and oak colors along the Calumet Trail and Chellberg Farm. Winters are cold, with January averages around 18-32 F and lake-effect snow, but Indiana Dunes State Park campground stays open year-round if your RV has a furnace. Pro tip: book around the Indiana Dunes Outdoor Adventure Festival in May for an unforgettable weekend.
weather.gov/lot/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay around Chesterton?
You'll be in great shape. Chesterton sits at the quiet I-94 exit 26B, with wide-open county roads and easy access to the Indiana Dunes, making it one of the friendlier areas in the Midwest for first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host walks you through driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the toilet system at pickup, and they're a text away during your trip. If big-rig nerves are still holding you back, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller travel trailer with delivery so you skip towing altogether. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center parking lot off IN-49 before heading north on US-12.
in.gov/indot/safety/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on US-12, a dead battery at Dunewood Campground, or a tow issue on I-94, help is one phone call away, day or night. Your host is also your direct line for quick troubleshooting on things like the generator, awning, or water pump, and the RVezy support team backs you up if anything escalates. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Chesterton and you can hit the road relaxed, knowing a minor hiccup will not derail your Indiana Dunes RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Chesterton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to most of it. Crossing into Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, or anywhere else in the lower 48 is allowed on the vast majority of RVezy rentals in Chesterton, which makes a Great Lakes loop totally doable: Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinac Island, or Door County are all popular runs. Travel into Canada may also be allowed depending on the host and the insurance on the vehicle, so message the host directly from the listing to confirm before you book a cross-border trip. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental, since coverage doesn't extend south of the border. Confirm your route in the chat and you're set.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on an Indiana Dunes RV trip?
Gas is one of the friendlier expenses in Northwest Indiana, which keeps an RV road trip from Chesterton affordable. Indiana gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, often in the $3.10-$3.60 per gallon range. Class B campervans get roughly 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8-12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes around 6-10 MPG; gas trucks pulling travel trailers usually land near 8-12 MPG. For a 3-day local trip exploring the dunes, Beverly Shores, and Michigan City, plan on $80-$150 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Chesterton or Portage before heading into Michigan, where prices on US-12 jump quickly.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Chesterton?
Book early and you will have your pick. Indiana Dunes State Park Campground opens reservations up to six months ahead through camp.IN.gov, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often sell out within hours of release. Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park takes reservations six months out on Recreation.gov. For weekday or shoulder-season trips, two to four weeks is usually enough. Pro tip: if your dream weekend is full, set a cancellation alert; sites open up regularly, and many Chesterton RVezy hosts will reschedule your delivery if you snag a last-minute campground booking.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232416What are driving conditions like around Chesterton?
Driving around Chesterton is genuinely easy for RVs. I-94 and US-20 are flat, wide, and well-maintained, and IN-49 connects directly to the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center and the state park. Watch for two local quirks: the South Shore Line railroad crossings on US-12 (always come to a full stop), and the low underpass on Mineral Springs Road, which has limited clearance for taller Class A rigs (stick to IN-49 instead). In winter, lake-effect snow squalls can drop visibility fast between Chesterton and Michigan City, so check the National Weather Service Chicago forecast before driving. Avoid the Chicago Skyway and Indiana Toll Road at rush hour and you'll enjoy a smooth ride.
in.gov/indot/traveler-information/What amenities do campgrounds near Chesterton offer?
You will find solid hookups close by. Indiana Dunes State Park Campground in Chesterton has 140+ electric sites, water fill stations, a dump station, heated shower houses, and a camp store in summer. Sand Creek Campground in Chesterton offers full hookups including sewer at the site, plus a pool and laundry. Dunewood Campground in Beverly Shores has no hookups but provides potable water, a dump station, and modern restrooms with showers, so plan to arrive with full fresh tanks if you camp there. Pro tip: the nearest public RV dump station outside the parks is at the Indiana Dunes State Park entrance, and propane refills are available at Tractor Supply on Indian Boundary Road.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's actually inside the RVs I'd rent in Chesterton?
More than you'd think. Most RVezy rentals in Chesterton come fully equipped for a turn-key trip: a queen or king bed, additional bunks or convertible dinettes (great for family RV trips in Chesterton), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many listings include a TV, WiFi hotspot, outdoor chairs, a grill, and a generator or solar setup for boondocking. Each RVezy listing has a full amenities checklist, so you can see exactly what's included before you book. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book and outdoor speakers if you're planning beach days at Lake View Beach.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Lots of helpful extras make your motorhome rental in Chesterton easier. Common add-ons from local hosts include linen and kitchen packages ($50-$100), generator use (often $3-$5 per hour over a free allotment), bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, and camping chair sets. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Chesterton, Porter, Valparaiso, or Portage, but many hosts offer delivery to Indiana Dunes State Park, Dunewood Campground, or even your driveway. Mileage policies vary; some hosts offer 100-150 free miles per night, others offer unlimited. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package on your first trip and you can show up to a fully made-up RV with nothing but your suitcase.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/indiana-dunes-state-park/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Chesterton through RVezy, you pay online with a credit or debit card; the total includes the nightly rate, host fees, the protection plan you select, and applicable taxes. A refundable security deposit is held separately before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and released after the trip once the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid surprises, do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and again at drop-off, respect the mileage and generator allotments, and return with the fuel and tanks as agreed. Easy in, easy out, and you are free to enjoy your Chesterton getaway.
