Campgrounds near Clinton, Indiana

Clinton sits in Vermillion County along the Wabash River in west-central Indiana, roughly 20 minutes north of Terre Haute and within easy reach of Parke County, which is marketed as the Covered Bridge Capital of the World. RV travelers use the town as a base for lake fishing, covered-bridge driving loops, and state-park hiking, with campgrounds ranging from large membership resorts to small county parks. The closest full-service option is Horseshoe Lakes RV Campground, a Thousand Trails property spanning about 290 acres with 11 fishable lakes and family-oriented amenities. Hawthorn Park, a Vigo County park southwest of Terre Haute, offers 75 modern sites and 10 primitive sites around a wetland wildlife refuge. North of Clinton in Parke County, Covered Bridge Campground in Rockville, Peaceful Waters Campground near Bloomingdale, and Willow Rose RV Park in Bridgeton put travelers within driving distance of the county's 31 covered bridges and Turkey Run State Park.

Things to do near Clinton

Fishing is the anchor activity in the area. Horseshoe Lakes RV Campground has 11 lakes stocked with bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill, and Peaceful Waters Campground offers a private pond with paddle craft available to registered campers. Covered-bridge touring is the other major draw. Parke County keeps 31 historic covered bridges on color-coded driving routes headquartered at the courthouse lawn in Rockville, and the Covered Bridge Festival each October is billed as Indiana's largest festival. Turkey Run State Park, roughly a half-hour north, adds sandstone canyon hiking, and Hawthorn Park layers in trails, a canoe and kayak dock, an archery range, and a wildlife observation shelter over the J.I. Case Wetland.

The camping season in west-central Indiana is squarely a warm-weather affair. Hawthorn Park's campground operates from May 1 through October 15, and Willow Rose RV Park runs seasonally through the warmer months. Many surrounding parks follow similar April-to-October windows, so early spring and late fall trips call for confirming that hookups and shower houses are actually open. Summer weekends fill quickly at family-oriented properties, and reservations are strongly recommended during the peak season. The single biggest demand spike is the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival, a ten-day event centered on Rockville that starts the second Friday in October. Every campground in the region books out weeks or months ahead for those dates, so confirm cancellation and payment deadlines at the time of reservation. Winter camping is limited. Covered Bridge Campground stays open year-round, but its shower house is only open April through October. Most other parks close entirely through the coldest months.

Richard was very responsive to any questions that I had prior to picking unit up. Trailer was very clean and still looks like new inside. Had all the basic necessities both inside and out to ensure easy set-up. Would highly recommend this unit if you are camping in Indy area. Donnie Luce-CA

I had a great vacation and the ease of renting the camper made it so much better than staying in a hotel. Richard made it an easy transaction and was there if I needed any help. The camper was accommodating, very clean and comfortable to sleep in. I won't hesitate to do this again in the future and look forward to having another fulfilled adventure.

Great stay in this camper. It literally has everything you need or cooking, cleaning and comfort. They truly thought everything through and it made our life a whole lot easier. They had everything set up and ready to go and came and picked it up when we were done. Great stay!

How to book

Vigo County Parks manages Hawthorn Park bookings through the vigoparks.org website, where campers pick dates, choose between electric, electric-with-water, or primitive sites, select a specific site number, and check out online. The park office at 812-462-3225 handles phone questions and walk-in availability. Private parks in the area use a mix of platforms. Peaceful Waters Campground takes reservations through Campspot, Horseshoe Lakes RV Campground operates as a Thousand Trails property that also accepts non-member stays through its Indiana location page, and smaller properties such as Covered Bridge Campground and Willow Rose RV Park book directly by phone or through their websites. For the Covered Bridge Festival in October, book several months out.

What to expect on site

Sites in the Clinton area lean toward shaded, wooded settings with gravel or grass pads. Hawthorn Park has pull-through sites with 30 and 50-amp electric, water hookups at select locations, a modern shower house, restrooms, and a dump station. Horseshoe Lakes RV Campground recently completed a full electrical upgrade to 50/30-amp service across the property. Cell coverage varies by carrier, so travelers who rely on data should check their provider before arrival. Highway noise can affect front-row sites at parks near US-41, while back-of-park sites tend to be quieter. Expect small-town amenities in Clinton and Rockville, larger grocery and retail in Terre Haute about 20 minutes south, and gravel county roads leading to the more remote covered bridges.
