Camping near Cloverdale, Indiana
Cloverdale sits just off Interstate 70 in Putnam County, roughly 40 miles west of Indianapolis and 35 miles east of Terre Haute. The town serves as the closest highway access for Lieber State Recreation Area on Cagles Mill Lake, Indiana's first flood-control reservoir. The 1,400-acre lake anchors most of the RV camping in the immediate area.
Options range from the state-run campground at Lieber SRA, which offers Class A electric and Class B non-electric sites, to smaller private grounds. Sunny Acres Lake Lieber State Recreation Area and Misty Morning Campground are close to town, while Fallen Rock Campground and Hickory Hills Campground round out the local list. McCormick's Creek State Park sits farther south near Spencer and remains a regional draw, though its campground has been closed since tornado damage.
The surrounding landscape is gentle west-central Indiana: mixed hardwood forest, farmland, and reservoir shoreline. Cataract Falls, the largest-volume waterfall in the state, is a short drive south of Cloverdale off US-231.
Things to do near Cloverdale
Cagles Mill Lake is the primary draw. Boating, fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill, and paddling from the lake's boat ramps fill most summer days. A short drive south leads to Upper and Lower Cataract Falls, connected by a historic covered bridge, with easy walking paths suitable for younger kids.
Hiking is concentrated at Lieber SRA and, farther south, at McCormick's Creek State Park, where trails lead through a limestone canyon past McCormick's Creek Falls. The park operates a seasonal pool and the Canyon Inn lodge, both of which continue to welcome day visitors.
For rainy-day backup, Greencastle offers restaurants and DePauw University's campus, and Indianapolis is roughly 45 minutes east for museums, the zoo, or a pro sports game.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. Indiana state park campgrounds, including the loops at Lieber SRA, stay open year-round, but water systems, the swim beach, and the seasonal aquatic center operate only from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekends from Memorial Day through mid-August book out earliest, especially the Class A electric loops at Poplar Grove.
Spring can be wet. Cagles Mill Lake is a flood-control reservoir managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and high water levels have delayed the Lieber SRA beach opening in recent seasons, sometimes leaving the beach, courtesy docks, and lakeside boat ramp inaccessible. Check property alerts before booking waterfront loops in March, April, or early May.
Fall brings cooler nights, low crowds, and hardwood color from mid-October. The McCormick's Creek campground has remained closed since the EF-3 tornado that struck the park; day use, Canyon Inn, most cabins, and a growing list of trails at that park continue to operate.

Richard was very responsive to any questions that I had prior to picking unit up. Trailer was very clean and still looks like new inside. Had all the basic necessities both inside and out to ensure easy set-up. Would highly recommend this unit if you are camping in Indy area. Donnie Luce-CA

I had a great vacation and the ease of renting the camper made it so much better than staying in a hotel. Richard made it an easy transaction and was there if I needed any help. The camper was accommodating, very clean and comfortable to sleep in. I won't hesitate to do this again in the future and look forward to having another fulfilled adventure.

How to book
Indiana DNR campgrounds, including Lieber State Recreation Area, are reserved through camp.IN.gov (the state's ReserveAmerica portal) or by calling 1-866-622-6746. Campsite bookings open six months ahead of the arrival date on a rolling basis, and popular summer weekends fill within days of the window opening. Weekends require a two-night minimum, and holiday weekends require three nights. Shelters and inn cabins can be reserved up to 12 months out.
Out-of-state visitors pay a higher daily gate fee than Indiana residents; frequent visitors can offset that with a non-resident annual entrance pass. Overnight campers pay the entrance fee once and receive an in-and-out tag for the length of the stay.
Private campgrounds near Cloverdale, such as Misty Morning Campground, Hickory Hills Campground, and Fallen Rock Campground, book directly through the property. Call ahead for big-rig length limits and hookup availability.
What to expect on site
Lieber SRA offers 115 Class A sites with 30-amp electric in the Poplar Grove loop and 94 Class B non-electric sites in the Sunny Acres loop, most tucked under a hardwood and pine canopy. Sites typically include an asphalt pad, fire ring, and two picnic tables. There are no full-hookup sites at the state park; a dump station and frost-free water hydrants serve the campground.
Cell service is spotty to nonexistent through most of the campground. Download maps and confirm reservations before arriving. Bathhouses with flush toilets and showers are walk-to rather than in-site.
Amenities include a camp store selling firewood, ice, and bait, a marina with boat rentals, playgrounds, a nature center, and a seasonal aquatic center with a zero-entry pool and water slide. Blue-green algae advisories are posted year-round on Indiana lakes; shower after swimming and keep pets from drinking lake water.
