Campgrounds and RV parks near Darlington, IN

Paddling Sugar Creek is the signature activity, and Sugar Creek Campground offers nearly 48 acres with a half mile of Sugar Creek frontage, camping for tents, RVs, or air-conditioned cabins, and scenic canoe, kayak, or tube trips on the creek. Hiking is the other big draw: the beautiful sandstone cliffs overlooking Sugar Creek and numerous shady ravines at Shades State Park, along with the Pine Hills Nature Preserve, offer spectacular topography for those willing to take a fairly long hike. Turkey Run adds deeper ravines and historic sites. In Crawfordsville, the Rotary Jail Museum and the Sugar Creek Trail give a change of pace on rainy days, and Parke County's covered-bridge routes are within easy driving distance.

The camping season in this part of Indiana runs primarily from April through October. State-park campgrounds at Turkey Run stay open year round, while Shades State Park operates with seasonal camping from April through October, with no overnight camping permitted from November through March, though the park itself remains open for day use year-round. Private parks follow a similar calendar; Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals is open from May through October, matching the paddling season on Sugar Creek. Summer weekends and holiday periods are peak, with sites at popular state parks and creekside private grounds filling well ahead. Spring brings higher water on Sugar Creek and can pause canoe rentals during flood events, while fall delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong color through the ravines. Winter camping is limited to a small number of hardy sites at Turkey Run and to the Crawfordsville KOA, which operates on a reduced schedule.

Expect a rural, wooded setting with rolling farmland and creek bottoms rather than dramatic terrain. Private parks in the area generally offer 30- and 50-amp hookups, water, sewer, and a dump station; Crawfordsville KOA Journey provides pull-through sites, big-rig access, a dump station, 30- and 50-amp electric, water and sewer hookups, showers, laundry, a pool, playground, and a general store. State-park campgrounds skew more primitive: Shades has around 105 non-electric, pet-friendly campsites, reservable but also available by local sale when unreserved sites are open. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Crawfordsville and thinner in the ravines. Bugs peak in early summer, and Sugar Creek levels vary sharply with rainfall.
