Campgrounds and RV parks near De Motte, IN

Kankakee Sands, a Nature Conservancy preserve west of De Motte along U.S. 41, is the signature outdoor attraction. The preserve covers roughly 8,400 acres and provides habitat for American bison as well as hundreds of species of smaller mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and native plants. The site is open every day of the year, with regular visiting hours from dawn to dusk, and admission is free. Fair Oaks Farms, just south on I-65, runs dairy and pig adventure tours popular with families. Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area offers fishing, waterfowl viewing, and quiet paddling, and the Kankakee River provides flatwater canoeing and smallmouth bass fishing. For a longer day trip, Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park sit about an hour north on Lake Michigan, with beaches, dune hikes, and the Dunewood Campground within the national park.

Northwest Indiana has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. The RV season for most private parks around De Motte runs from spring through fall, roughly April into October, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Holiday weekends fill fastest, and Lake Holiday Camp-Resort in particular functions as a seasonal community where many sites are held by returning campers, so weekend transient availability tightens early in summer. Late spring and early summer bring the wettest stretch of the year, with May and June typically the highest-precipitation months. Sites can be soft after storms, and mosquitoes are heavy near the wetlands and river bottoms. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Fall cools quickly through October, foliage peaks in mid to late October, and precipitation drops off. Winters are cold with lake-effect snow influence from Lake Michigan; most private RV parks close or scale back services, while nearby state park campgrounds like Indiana Dunes shift to limited winter availability.

Expect a mix of long-term seasonal residents and short-stay travelers at the private lakeside parks. Site boundaries at older resorts can be indistinct and some pull-ins are tight, so drivers of larger rigs should ask for a walk-through or a pull-through site when possible. Cell service on major carriers is generally reliable near I-65 and in De Motte itself. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV supply runs are straightforward in town. Firewood is typically sold on-site at the resorts, and buying local is encouraged to limit the spread of tree pests. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and deer flies, are active from late May through August near the wetlands and lakes. Tornado watches are possible in spring and early summer, and most parks have a designated shelter or sturdy building for severe weather.
