Campgrounds and RV parks near Decatur, IN

Ouabache State Park is the anchor attraction. Visitors can view the American bison exhibit, climb the fire tower for a canopy view, fish Kunkel Lake, and ride the paved bike path that connects the park to Bluffton along the Wabash River. Trails range from an easy 1.5-mile loop starting at the campground to a 6-mile perimeter route through hardwood and pine stands. Beyond the park, downtown Decatur hosts small-town shopping along Second Street and the long-running Callithumpian Parade each summer. Day trips reach Fort Wayne for the Children's Zoo, Science Central, and the Botanical Conservatory. Anglers and paddlers head to the St. Marys River, the Wabash, or reservoirs east into Ohio. Rainy-day backups include the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society in New Haven, which operates excursions on vintage passenger trains.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when temperatures are warm and Ouabache State Park runs naturalist programs. Weekends fill quickly at both the KOA and the state park, so booking several weeks ahead is standard for summer Fridays and Saturdays. Severe thunderstorms are possible from late spring through midsummer, and northeast Indiana averages roughly 39 thunderstorm days per year with about 10 days of severe weather. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and better site selection. Fall color typically peaks in mid-to-late October across the hardwood stands at Ouabache. The first freeze in the Fort Wayne area occurs in mid-October on average, and autumn is the drier end of the year. Winter camping is limited but possible. Ouabache State Park lists its campground status as open year round, and the Bluffton KOA keeps full hookups available November through April with the requirement that units use a heated water supply line. Most other private parks reduce services or close entirely during the coldest months.

Indiana state park campgrounds, including Ouabache, offer electric hookups at most sites but not water or sewer at the pad. Dump stations and centralized water fills are provided, and Indiana requires a daily vehicle entrance fee at the gatehouse in addition to the campsite reservation. Alcohol is prohibited in all Indiana State Parks, and firewood should be purchased locally or at the park camp store to limit invasive insects. The Bluffton KOA runs full hookups with pull-throughs up to 90 feet, a heated pool from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, laundry, and a camp store. Train tracks pass nearby, and reviewers consistently mention overnight horn noise. Cell coverage is generally reliable across Adams and Wells counties. Grocery runs are easy from Decatur or Bluffton, both a short drive from every campground on this list.
