Campgrounds near East Chicago
East Chicago sits on the Lake Michigan shore in northwest Indiana, roughly 25 miles southeast of downtown Chicago and about 30 to 45 minutes west of Indiana Dunes National Park. The immediate area is heavily industrial, so most RV campgrounds cluster inland along the U.S. 30 and I-65 corridors, in and around Portage, Cedar Lake, and the outer Chicago suburbs.
Private parks handle the bulk of RV inventory. Lakeshore Camp Resort in Portage is the largest option nearby, a 940-site membership park that keeps roughly 115 full-hookup sites and 12 cabins open to the general public. Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park and the adjacent Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park sit about 25 miles south on Cedar Lake itself, while Emerald Trails Campground and Pingala RV Resort round out the closer private options.
Public campgrounds are farther out. Indiana Dunes National Park runs Dunewood Campground east along U.S. 12, and Indiana Dunes State Park operates a separate campground of about 140 electric sites inside the state park boundary.
Things to do near East Chicago
Indiana Dunes is the anchor attraction. The national park covers about 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and 16,000 acres, with more than 50 miles of trails crossing dunes, wetlands, prairies, and forest. Swimming, birding, and beach days at West Beach, Porter Beach, and Kemil Beach are the standard summer draws.
Inside Indiana Dunes State Park, the 3 Dune Challenge and beach frontage give families a compact day trip. Cedar Lake, roughly 25 miles south, offers boating, fishing, and quieter shoreline access near Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park.
Downtown Chicago is reachable without moving the RV. The South Shore Line runs from stations in East Chicago, Hammond, and Gary directly to Millennium Station, so families typically leave the rig at the campground and ride the train in for a museum or lakefront day.

The RV season in northwest Indiana runs from spring through fall, with heavy demand concentrated between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Warm, humid weather and long daylight push private parks and Indiana Dunes campgrounds to fill weekends well in advance. Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park operates from about April 1 through November 1.
Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for touring the dunes and trails. Wildflowers appear along the Little Calumet and Heron Rookery in spring, and maples color the wooded sections of the national park in October. Bugs ease off and crowds thin noticeably after Labor Day.
Winter camping is limited. Indiana Dunes State Park campground stays open year-round, but lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan can be heavy near the shoreline, and Dunewood and most private loops close or reduce services from late fall through early spring.

How to book near East Chicago
Indiana Dunes National Park's Dunewood Campground books through Recreation.gov on a six-month rolling window, with sites first released each November 15 for the following season. About half of the sites remain first-come, first-served, but summer weekends on the reservable side often clear within days of release, so setting up a Recreation.gov account before the booking date matters.
Indiana Dunes State Park uses the Indiana DNR ReserveAmerica portal. Electric sites can be booked up to six months ahead and must be reserved at least two days before arrival.
Private parks near East Chicago, including Lakeshore Camp Resort, Emerald Trails Campground, Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park, Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park, and Pingala RV Resort, are booked directly with each park by phone or website. Holiday weekends should be locked in months out; midweek stays are usually easier to grab last minute.
What to expect near East Chicago
Sites near East Chicago skew toward developed private parks with full hookups, paved or gravel pads, and family amenities like pools, playgrounds, and small lakes. Lakeshore Camp Resort, for example, has four pools, a 22-acre lake with boat rental, and organized weekend activities. Sites there sit close together and a large share are seasonal, so expect a busy, neighborhood feel rather than a quiet forest campground.
Highway and rail noise is a factor across the corridor. Lakeshore Camp Resort sits near I-80/94 and active freight lines, and many nearby parks are within earshot of major roads.
For a quieter, no-hookup experience, Dunewood Campground inside the national park has more spacing between sites, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station near the entrance, but no electric or water at individual pads.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Chicago,%20IndianaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in East Chicago, Indiana?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in East Chicago. Indiana does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers booked through RVezy. You need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters in Northwest Indiana are surprised at how quick the process is, and you can be approved to hit the road in just a few minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in East Chicago booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Indiana Toll Road with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle, giving you serious financial reassurance. During checkout you, the guest, choose from different protection tiers based on how much coverage you want, so you stay in control of your comfort level. Hosts do not choose your protection level. Pro tip: if you're driving the busy I-90/I-94 corridor near Chicago, opt for a higher tier for extra confidence in stop-and-go traffic.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my East Chicago RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every East Chicago RV rental (not individual hosts), and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on factors like how many days out you are from your trip start and circumstances such as natural disasters or severe weather. Lake Michigan winter storms or summer thunderstorms can be unpredictable, so it's reassuring to know there's a clear framework in place. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit. You can always review current cancellation details by contacting RVezy support before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an East Chicago RV trip?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in East Chicago, you just need to filter for the Pet-Friendly tag when searching. Northwest Indiana is a great region for dog-loving campers: Indiana Dunes National Park allows leashed pets on most trails and beaches (except the West Beach swim area), and Whihala Beach County Park in nearby Whiting has off-leash hours along Lake Michigan. Dunewood Campground inside the national park is also pet-friendly. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee and to ask if they include perks like a pet bed or a tie-out stake, many East Chicago hosts go the extra mile for four-legged guests.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to me in East Chicago?
Yes, RV delivery in East Chicago is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game changer if you've never driven a big rig. Many hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to your campground, driveway, or even a tailgate spot near the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana. They'll level it, hook it up to power and water, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Use the Delivery filter when browsing listings to see who offers it, and check each host's delivery radius and fees. Pro tip: ask for delivery to Dunewood Campground or Indiana Dunes State Park, you'll skip the stress of towing and start your trip with toes in the sand.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Chicago,%20IndianaHow far can I travel on an RV rental from East Chicago?
You've got serious range from East Chicago. Many hosts on RVezy offer generous daily mileage allowances, and some even list RV rentals with unlimited mileage so you can roam without watching the odometer. East Chicago sits at the crossroads of I-90, I-94, I-80, and I-65, putting big destinations within easy reach: Indiana Dunes National Park is just 25 miles east, downtown Chicago is 25 miles west, Michigan City is 35 miles east, Indianapolis is about 160 miles south, and Mackinaw City, Michigan is roughly 350 miles north for an epic Lake Michigan loop. Pro tip: confirm the mileage policy on the listing page before booking, and ask the host about a flat-rate package if you're planning a longer East Chicago RV trip.
in.gov/indot/Where can I camp with my RV near East Chicago?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in East Chicago and the surrounding Northwest Indiana region. Top picks include Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park (about 20 miles east, electric-free sites in a wooded setting), Indiana Dunes State Park Campground in Chesterton with electric hookups and beach access, Michigan City Campground with 90-foot pull-through 50-amp sites, Sunset Hill Farm County Park near Valparaiso, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Plymouth for family fun. For overnight parking, the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana sometimes allows RV stays with permission. Pro tip: Dunewood is some of the best campgrounds near East Chicago for dune access, book early because summer weekends fill fast.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhen is the best time to take an East Chicago RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for an East Chicago RV trip, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-70s°F in May and September to the mid-80s°F in July and August. July and August are warmest and busiest along the Lake Michigan beaches, while September delivers cooler nights (50s°F), fewer crowds, and stunning dune sunsets. October brings vibrant fall color across Indiana Dunes and the Calumet region. Spring (April-May) is gorgeous for migration birding at the Indiana Dunes. Winter RVing is possible but cold (often below freezing with lake-effect snow), so look for four-season rigs if you go. Pro tip: target the week after Labor Day for warm water, empty trails, and the best campground availability.
weather.gov/lot/What if I've never rented an RV before?
You're in great hands, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host in East Chicago provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water hookups, propane, and dump procedures so you leave feeling confident. You can also message your host directly through the platform before booking with any question, no matter how small. For nervous first-timers, a Class B campervan or small travel trailer is the easiest place to start, both drive close to a large van or SUV. Pro tip: pick up your RV in the morning so you have plenty of daylight to settle in at your first campground, like Indiana Dunes State Park just 25 miles up the road.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/index.htmWhat if my RV breaks down during the trip?
You're never stranded. Every booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you have a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or mechanical hiccup anywhere in Northwest Indiana or beyond, help is a phone call away. Your host is also a great first resource for quirks specific to their rig and can usually troubleshoot fast over text. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after every trip. East Chicago is fortunate to have major repair shops and tire centers along I-90 in Hammond and Gary, so help is usually close even on busy holiday weekends. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and tire size at pickup, it speeds up any roadside call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my East Chicago RV rental into Illinois, Michigan, or Canada?
Absolutely, an RV road trip from East Chicago across state lines is one of the best parts of the location. You're 15 minutes from Illinois (hello, Chicago skyline), 45 minutes from Michigan (Warren Dunes and the wine country of Harbor Country), and about 5 hours from the Ontario border at Detroit. Most hosts allow travel throughout the continental US, and many permit Canada trips too, just confirm directly on the listing or by messaging the host before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance won't follow you across that border. Pro tip: a classic route is East Chicago to Saugatuck, MI (about 2 hours), looping back through New Buffalo wineries.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on an East Chicago RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans typically get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8-12 MPG, and large Class A rigs hover around 6-10 MPG. Gas prices in Northwest Indiana tend to run slightly below the Illinois side of the border (Indiana has lower fuel taxes), so fill up before crossing into Chicago. As a rough estimate, a 500-mile weekend in a Class C at $3.50/gallon and 10 MPG runs about $175 in fuel. Pro tip: the Family Express and Speedway stations along US-12 and US-20 in Lake County are RV-friendly with high canopies and easy pull-throughs, perfect for topping off before heading to the Indiana Dunes.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near East Chicago?
For peak summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book your campground 4-6 months ahead, especially at Indiana Dunes National Park's Dunewood Campground and Indiana Dunes State Park. Indiana state park sites are reserved through camp.IN.gov and open up to six months in advance, while national park sites go through Recreation.gov on a six-month rolling window. Weekday and shoulder-season trips are much easier, often you can snag a spot a week out. Pro tip: if you strike out at the Dunes, try Sunset Hill Farm County Park near Valparaiso or head to Warren Dunes State Park in Michigan (about 45 minutes away), which sometimes has last-minute openings.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234118What are the driving conditions like around East Chicago?
East Chicago sits in one of the busiest freight corridors in America, but it's very manageable with a little planning. The Indiana Toll Road (I-90), Borman Expressway (I-80/94), and Cline Avenue handle heavy semi-truck traffic, so avoid rush hour (7-9 AM and 4-6 PM weekdays) when heading to or from Chicago. Watch for low clearance on older underpasses in Hammond and Whiting, most modern RVs (under 12 feet) clear easily but always check posted heights. Winter brings lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Michigan from November to March, so check forecasts. Pro tip: pickup the RV mid-morning on a weekday and head east toward the Dunes, traffic thins out dramatically once you pass Gary on I-94.
in.gov/indot/2390.htmWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near East Chicago?
Most RV parks in Northwest Indiana offer a comfortable level of amenities. Indiana Dunes State Park Campground has electric hookups (30/50-amp), flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station. Michigan City Campground delivers full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, a pool, and a small store. Dunewood Campground in the national park is more rustic with no hookups but provides potable water and a dump station. For fresh water and dumping between trips, the Indiana Dunes State Park dump station is open seasonally to registered campers, and many travel centers along I-80/94 offer dump services for a small fee. Pro tip: ask your host if the RV comes with a freshwater hose and sewer kit, most East Chicago hosts include both.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/indiana-dunes-state-park/What's typically included in an East Chicago RV rental?
Most motorhome rentals in East Chicago come surprisingly well-equipped. Expect comfortable beds (queen or king in the master, plus convertible dinettes or bunks), a functional kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and cookware, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for every traveler. Many Class C and Class A motorhomes also include a generator, outdoor speakers, an awning, and a flat-screen TV. Wi-Fi varies, so if you need to work on the road, ask your host or plan to use a mobile hotspot (Verizon and AT&T have strong coverage across Lake County). Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list for linens and a starter kit, many East Chicago hosts include sheets, towels, and even camp chairs at no extra cost.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and options can I get with my RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer all kinds of helpful add-ons to make your East Chicago RV trip easier. Popular options include delivery and setup, generator usage packages, bike racks, camping chairs, kayaks or paddleboards (huge for Lake Michigan), grills, kitchen kits, linen packages, and pet add-ons. Hosts set their own pricing for these, typically $10-$75 each, and they're listed right on the listing page. For pickup and dropoff, most hosts use their home base in East Chicago, Hammond, or Gary, and many offer flexible time windows. Each listing also shows the mileage policy upfront. Pro tip: if you want unlimited mileage for a Chicago-to-Mackinac loop, sort listings by that filter or message hosts directly to negotiate a package.
visitindiana.com/things-to-do/outdoors/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything protected by the platform. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment, with the exact amount shown clearly on the listing before you book, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value. As long as the rig comes back in the same shape you received it, with the correct fuel level and clean tanks, the deposit is released after your trip. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff with your host in East Chicago, it documents the condition and keeps the deposit return fast and stress-free.
