Camping near Elwood, Indiana
Elwood sits in Madison County in east-central Indiana, on the flat farmland north of Indianapolis and just west of Anderson. The area works as a practical base for RV travelers who want a quiet county-road setting within an hour of the state capital, with Mounds State Park east of Anderson and its prehistoric earthworks close by.
Private campgrounds dominate the immediate area. Hidden Lake Campground, Riverbend Campground, Glo Wood Campground, and the Mystic Waters Outdoor Escape & Family Campground, along with Mystic Waters Campground, cover the closest options for full-hookup and family-oriented stays. Most operate seasonally and cater to weekend RV traffic from Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Muncie.
Beyond the private parks, Mounds State Park near Anderson is the nearest public campground and adds 75 campsites with electricity, pet-friendly sites, pull-through and back-in options, a dump station, bathrooms, and water accessible from every site, plus hiking along the White River. Together, the mix gives renters a choice between quiet private lakes, riverfront sites, and a state-park setting, all within a short drive of Elwood.
Things to do around Elwood
Water recreation is the main draw at the private campgrounds. Hidden Lake Campground and the Mystic Waters properties center on small lakes for fishing, swimming, and paddling, while Riverbend Campground sits along a river frontage suited to bank fishing and tubing. Glo Wood Campground leans toward a wooded, family-oriented setup with planned weekend activities in season.
Off-site, Mounds State Park features 10 earthworks built by the Adena-Hopewell people, including the Great Mound believed to date to around 160 B.C., plus a Nature Center with wildlife displays. Naturalist-led hikes and interpretive programs run every weekend throughout the year. Day trips reach Conner Prairie in Fishers for a living-history experience, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its museum, and Muncie for Ball State University and Minnetrista.

Most private campgrounds in the Elwood area operate from spring through late fall, with a typical window running from April into October. Water features, pools, and planned activities usually come online in May and wind down after Labor Day. Winter camping options are limited at the private parks, and many close fully or drop to primitive service once freezing temperatures set in. Mounds State Park itself is open year round, though with reduced services in the coldest months.
Late spring and early summer bring the greenest scenery and warm swimming weather, but also the wettest stretch of the year and higher mosquito pressure near lakes and river bottoms. Midsummer weekends and holidays fill first, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day, so booking several weeks ahead is normal for full-hookup sites.
September and early October are the shoulder sweet spot: cooler nights, fewer bugs, active fall foliage along the White River, and easier same-week availability. By November, overnight lows regularly drop below freezing and water systems at most private parks are shut down for the season.

Thanks for everything. Motorhome was very nice.

Good value for the money. Rv was in good condition and ready to go on pickup. Everyone was very friendly, helpful and responsive. 9/10 would rent from again, 9 only for the purposes that we may rent a bigger rv in the future. But it reasonably accommodated 9 people for its size. We had a great trip.

Booking a site near Elwood
Private campgrounds around Elwood, including Hidden Lake Campground, Riverbend Campground, Glo Wood Campground, Mystic Waters Outdoor Escape & Family Campground, and Mystic Waters Campground, are booked directly through each park by phone or their own website. Availability is tightest on summer weekends and holidays, so reserving four to eight weeks out is recommended for RV sites with full hookups.
Mounds State Park uses the Indiana State Parks reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica, with reservations available for today and up to six months in advance. An Indiana State Parks entrance fee applies at the gate: $7 per vehicle for in-state plates and $15 per vehicle for out-of-state plates. Confirm rig-length limits and hookup type at the time of booking, since pull-through sites are limited and all others are back-in.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is flat to gently rolling farmland with pockets of hardwood forest and small lakes. Most private parks near Elwood offer gravel or grass pads, 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and on-site dump stations, with a mix of pull-through and back-in sites. Cell coverage across the major carriers is generally reliable this close to Indianapolis and I-69.
Expect a family and seasonal-camper atmosphere at the private parks, with playgrounds, camp stores, and weekend events during peak season. Mounds runs quieter, with modern restrooms, showers, a dump station for RVs, and a camp store offering basic supplies and firewood. Alcohol is prohibited in all Indiana State Parks, and quiet hours run from 11 pm to 7 am.
Summer brings humidity, thunderstorms, and mosquitoes near water, so screens, awning tie-downs, and bug spray earn their keep. Deer and raccoons are common, and standard food-storage habits apply.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elwood,IndianaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Elwood?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Elwood. Indiana does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels under 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which covers virtually every RV on the RVezy platform. RVezy approved drivers must be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and your ID is verified securely through the booking process. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is to hit the road in a motorhome rental Elwood hosts have ready to go.

The exact refund window depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Elwood?
Yes, plenty of furry co-pilots hit the road in Elwood every weekend. To find a pet-friendly RV rental Elwood hosts welcome dogs in, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host to confirm any size limits or cleaning fees. Once you are rolling, Mounds State Park allows leashed pets on hiking trails, and the Indianapolis KOA Holiday has dedicated pet areas. Shadyside Memorial Park in nearby Anderson also has open green space perfect for stretching your pup's legs after a drive. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, since Indiana summer afternoons regularly climb into the mid-80s.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/mounds-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Elwood?
Yes, RV delivery Elwood guests love is one of the platform's best features, especially if you have never towed a trailer. Many Elwood-area hosts will deliver your rig directly to Mounds State Park in Anderson (about 20 minutes south), Summit Lake State Park (about 30 miles east), or even your own driveway, then handle the full setup including leveling, hookups, and a walkthrough of every system. This is the easiest path for first-timers because you skip the highway driving entirely and step into a ready-to-camp RV. Filter listings by Delivery to see which hosts offer it, then message them with your campsite number and dates. Delivery fees typically scale with mileage, so closer drop-offs cost less.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elwood,IndianaHow does mileage work and how far can I drive from Elwood?
Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many Elwood listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. Always check the listing details, and if you are planning a big loop, message the host to ask about flat-rate mileage add-ons. From Elwood you are well-positioned for short hops or week-long adventures: Indianapolis is about 45 miles south, Indiana Dunes National Park sits about 175 miles north on Lake Michigan, Brown County State Park (Indiana's largest) is roughly 110 miles south, and Cincinnati is about 145 miles southeast. Pro tip: most hosts will quote a custom mileage package if you tell them your route upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elwood,IndianaWhere can I camp near Elwood with an RV?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Elwood is a great launchpad for. Mounds State Park in Anderson (about 20 miles south) has electric sites along the White River with a dump station and access to ancient Adena-Hopewell earthworks. Summit Lake State Park (about 30 miles east near New Castle) offers lakefront electric sites and great fishing. Indianapolis KOA Holiday and other nearby private parks add full hookups and family amenities. For best campgrounds near Elwood IN during summer holidays, book 2-3 months ahead.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/mounds-state-park/When is the best time to plan an Elwood RV trip?
Late April through mid-October is prime season for an Elwood RV trip, with the sweet spots being May (average highs around 71F), September (average highs around 75F), and early October when fall colors light up the White River valley. July and August bring warm, humid days averaging 81F with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, which is great for swimming at Mounds State Park's pool but worth planning around. Winters in Madison County are genuinely cold (January highs near 32F with snow possible), so most campgrounds run reduced services. For the best mix of comfort, low bug pressure, and open campsites, target the shoulder seasons of mid-May or mid-September.
weather.gov/ind/I've never driven an RV before. How does the pickup work?
First time renting an RV? You will be in great hands. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the hookups, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and dump valves before you ever leave the driveway. Most Elwood hosts spend 30-60 minutes making sure you feel confident, and you can text or call them throughout your trip with questions. RVezy's customer support and roadside assistance are also one tap away. Pro tip: choose a Class B campervan or small Class C for your first trip, since they drive much like a large van and handle Indiana's flat, grid-pattern country roads with ease.
rvezy.com/blog/rv-rental-guidesWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. From Elwood, help can typically reach you quickly on major routes like Interstate 69, State Road 28, or State Road 37. Your host is also a phone call away to walk you through quirks specific to their RV (sometimes a tripped GFCI is all it takes). For anything urgent, RVezy's support team is reachable around the clock. Pro tip: snap photos of every dial, switch, and hookup during your walkthrough so you have a quick reference if something acts up at a campsite at 9 p.m.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Elwood RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are part of the fun. An RV road trip from Elwood opens up easy access to Michigan (Sleeping Bear Dunes is about 350 miles north), Ohio's Hocking Hills (about 230 miles southeast), Kentucky's Mammoth Cave (about 280 miles south), and Chicago (about 200 miles northwest). Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and their insurance, so message them directly before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: keep your booking confirmation and host's contact info handy when crossing state lines, as some campgrounds ask for proof of authorization.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in Indiana?
Budgeting fuel is easier than you'd think. Class B campervans in the Elwood area typically get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 10-14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs come in around 7-10 MPG. Travel trailers don't have their own fuel cost, but expect your tow vehicle's MPG to drop by 30-40% when towing. Indiana gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, and you'll find plenty of fuel stops along Interstate 69, State Road 37, and State Road 28 near Elwood. Pro tip: many big-rig friendly stations are clustered near the I-69 exits in Anderson and Pendleton, making fuel-ups and propane refills convenient on your way out of town.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Elwood?
Lock in your campsite as early as you can, especially for summer weekends. Indiana State Parks (including Mounds State Park and Summit Lake State Park) accept reservations up to six months in advance through the Indiana DNR reservation system, and popular weekends like Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill up within hours of opening. Private parks near Anderson and Muncie also book months ahead for holidays. For weekday stays in May, September, or October, you can often grab a great site 2-3 weeks out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly six months before your target date and book the moment the window opens.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/reservations/What are driving conditions like around Elwood?
Driving in and around Elwood is refreshingly easy, even for first-time RVers. The terrain is flat farmland with a grid of straight rural roads, and Interstate 69 connects you quickly to Anderson, Indianapolis, and Fort Wayne. The main local routes (State Road 28, State Road 37, and State Road 9) are wide and lightly trafficked outside of rush hour. Watch for slow-moving farm equipment in spring and fall, deer at dawn and dusk, and occasional summer thunderstorms that can drop visibility quickly. Winter brings ice and snow from December through February, so most renters wrap up trips before Thanksgiving. Pro tip: avoid downtown Indianapolis at 4-6 p.m. on weekdays where lane width and traffic make big rigs uncomfortable.
in.gov/indot/2390.htmWhat amenities do campgrounds near Elwood typically offer?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Elwood are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Mounds State Park offers electric sites with a dump station and potable water, modern bathhouses with hot showers, and a camp store. Nearby private parks like Indianapolis KOA Holiday provide full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and a swimming pool. Summit Lake State Park has electric hookups and a dump station near the main entrance. For where to park an RV in Elwood between trips, several local hosts offer secure home-base parking. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any state park, since not every site has a spigot.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/mounds-state-park/What's included inside a typical RV rental in Elwood?
Modern comforts come standard. Most RVs on RVezy in the Elwood area sleep 4-8 people and include a full kitchen (refrigerator, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning and furnace heat, and dinettes that often convert to extra beds. Class C and Class A motorhomes include seatbelts for travel, and many listings come equipped with a TV, generator for off-grid power, outdoor awning, and propane grill. Campervan rental Elwood options are great for couples wanting easy-to-drive setups with built-in beds and kitchenettes. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list for Wi-Fi hotspots and bedding, and message the host to add any extras you need.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/mounds-state-park/What add-ons can I get and how do pickup and drop-off work?
Hosts offer plenty of extras to make your trip easier. Common add-ons in the Elwood area include linen and towel packages ($25-$75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane refills, generator hours, bike racks, and even pre-stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Elwood, with a 30-60 minute walkthrough included; many hosts also offer delivery to nearby campgrounds for a flat fee plus mileage. Return windows are typically late morning, and hosts inspect the RV alongside you. Pro tip: ask about a propane top-off add-on before pickup, since refilling tanks mid-trip in rural Madison County can mean a detour to Anderson or Marion.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/mounds-state-park/How do payments and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. RVezy processes everything through the platform using a credit or debit card, so you never hand cash to the host. Your trip total includes the nightly rate, any add-ons, the protection plan you choose, and applicable taxes, all shown clearly before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card around pickup time and released after drop-off, typically within a few days, assuming no damage or policy violations. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do a thorough walkthrough video with your host at pickup and drop-off, follow the mileage and generator-hour limits in your booking, and return the RV with fuel and waste tanks as agreed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Elwood for winter camping?
Winter RV trips around Elwood are doable with the right rig. January and February average highs are near 35F with overnight lows in the low 20s, so look for listings advertised as four-season with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a strong propane furnace. Mounds State Park's campground typically operates on a reduced schedule in winter, so confirm site availability before booking. Plug into shore power whenever possible to ease the load on your propane and batteries. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm winter-readiness, ask them to demo the antifreeze and tank-heater settings during the walkthrough, and pack extra blankets plus a small space heater for backup warmth.
