Campgrounds near Fremont, Indiana
Fremont sits in Steuben County in Indiana's far northeast corner, minutes from the Michigan and Ohio borders and directly off I-69. The area is known locally as Indiana Lakes Country, with more than 100 natural glacial lakes concentrated within a short drive. That density of water shapes the camping options: most parks and resorts are built around a specific lake, with beach access, boat launches, and fishing as the core draw.
Campers can base out of full-hookup private resorts such as Fish Lake Family Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Barton Lake, Collins Bay RV Community, or Buck Lake Ranch Inc, all within a short drive of Fremont. For a state-park experience with hiking, a nature center, and a full activity roster, Pokagon State Park near Angola is the anchor public campground in the region, offering electric and non-electric sites rather than full hookups.
I-69 provides the main access route, and most private resorts sit on paved county roads suitable for larger rigs.
Things to do around Fremont
Water-based recreation dominates the summer schedule. Lake James at Pokagon State Park offers boating, swimming, and fishing, and the smaller lakes around Fremont support the same mix on a quieter scale. Pokagon has miles of hiking and bridle trails through wetlands and forests, plus a lakeside swim beach, a saddle barn, and boat rentals at the Potawatomi Inn area.
Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Barton Lake get on-site pools, planned activities, and character events geared to younger kids. Fish Lake Family Resort and Collins Bay RV Community focus on lakefront fishing and long-stay sites. Buck Lake Ranch Inc has a long history as a country-music venue and hosts live shows through the warm season.
In winter, Pokagon runs a refrigerated twin-track toboggan run with a top recorded speed of 42 mph, plus cross-country ski rental, sledding, and ice fishing.

Peak camping season runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lake temperatures are warm enough for swimming and every private resort near Fremont is fully staffed. Weekends in July and August book out earliest, particularly holiday weekends and any dates overlapping Steuben County festivals. Reserving two to three months ahead is typical for lakefront and full-hookup sites.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with cooler nights and lighter crowds. Fall color in the hardwood forests around Pokagon typically peaks in mid-October. Some private resorts close or reduce services after mid-October, so confirming operating dates before booking a late-season trip is important.
Winter camping in the area is limited but possible. Pokagon's Campground 3 stays open through the winter with one heated comfort station and a water fill station available. The refrigerated toboggan run does not need snow and operates weekends from the day after Thanksgiving through early March.
How to book a campsite
Pokagon State Park uses the Indiana State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Sites open on a rolling window up to six months in advance of the arrival date, with releases at noon Eastern time, and popular summer weekends are typically claimed within minutes of opening. Setting up an account in advance and knowing the loop and site number before the window opens improves the odds of getting a lakefront site. A two-night minimum applies on non-holiday weekends.
Private resorts near Fremont, including Fish Lake Family Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Barton Lake, Collins Bay RV Community, and Buck Lake Ranch Inc, each run their own booking system through their operator sites. Deposits, minimum-night rules on holiday weekends, and cancellation windows vary by property, so confirming policies at the time of booking is worthwhile.
What to expect on arrival
Sites near Fremont are typically wooded or partially shaded, with grass or gravel pads. Most private resorts offer 30- and 50-amp service, dump stations, and Wi-Fi of variable strength given the rural setting. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town but can weaken along interior park roads.
At Pokagon, larger rigs need to plan carefully. The campground spans five loops with more than 500 sites on narrow, winding roads that can catch larger rigs off guard, and campers with RVs over 40 feet should review individual site descriptions and consider calling the park office before arrival. Pokagon offers electric and non-electric sites but no full hookups, and only two dump stations serve the entire campground.
Water and modern restrooms are reduced at Indiana State Park campgrounds from November through April, so late-season visitors should confirm services in advance.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Fremont, IN
Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Fremont, IN?
Great news: for an RV rental in Fremont, IN, your standard driver's license is all you need. Indiana does not require a commercial driver's license or special endorsement for personal recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds and under 45 feet, which covers virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on the platform. Visiting from abroad? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license keeps you compliant. RVezy verifies your ID through the app in a few quick taps, and every guest must be 25 or older to book. Pro tip: if you're new to bigger rigs, filter for a Class B or Class C in the 22-28 foot range to make navigating northeast Indiana's lake roads a breeze.
in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/How much does it cost to rent an RV in Fremont, IN?
An RV rental in Fremont, IN, is one of the best values in Indiana lake country. Travel trailers typically run $80 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A coaches sit in the $250 to $400 range. Because Pokagon State Park and Lake James draw big crowds in July and August, you'll find the best deals by booking shoulder-season trips in May, early June, September, or during the famous winter toboggan season. Hosts set their own pricing, so compare add-ons like generator hours, linens, and camp chairs when sorting listings. Pro tip: weeklong bookings often unlock discounts of 10 to 20 percent, making a cheap RV rental Fremont stay easy to pull off.
visitindiana.com/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/What's included in the protection package when I rent an RV in Fremont?
Every RV rental in Fremont booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of the driveway with real peace of mind. RVezy renter protection plans help cover physical damage to the vehicle during your rental, giving you a safety net for the unexpected, whether that's a flat tire on I-69 or a fender bump at a campground in Steuben County. You choose your coverage level during checkout from the available plan tiers (not the host), so you can match protection to your comfort. Roadside assistance is included with the protection plan and can dispatch help for lockouts, jump starts, tire changes, and towing. Pro tip: review the plan details before checkout and select a higher tier if you're heading into Michigan or planning long highway stretches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Fremont RV trip plans change?
Plans change, and RVezy is built for that. Cancellation policies are set by RVezy (not individual hosts), and the full terms, including refund windows and timing tiers, are detailed in the RVezy Help Center so you can review before booking. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook, so you're protected on both sides. Lake-effect snow and summer thunderstorms can pop up in northeast Indiana, so it's worth understanding the policy in advance. Pro tip: lock in your dates early for Pokagon State Park weekends since campsites book up months ahead, and review the cancellation timing tiers on RVezy so you know exactly where you stand if life gets in the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Fremont, IN?
Absolutely, and northeast Indiana is wonderfully dog-friendly. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Fremont, and message the host to confirm any pet fees or notes. Once you're rolling, Pokagon State Park allows leashed pets on trails and at most campsites (pets must be on a leash no longer than six feet). Trine State Recreation Area and the trails around Lake James also welcome leashed pets. Pro tip: pack a tie-out cable, a portable water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination, which Indiana State Parks may ask for at check-in. Your dog will love the lakeside walks as much as you will.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/pokagon-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campground near Fremont?
Yes, RV delivery Fremont is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many hosts in the Fremont, Angola, and Steuben County area deliver directly to Pokagon State Park, Trine State Recreation Area, Jellystone Park at Pigeon Lake, or even a private lakehouse driveway on Lake James. The host arrives ahead of you, levels the rig, hooks up water and power, and walks you through every system from the awning to the water heater. Delivery fees usually scale with mileage, so a drop-off within 10 to 20 miles of Fremont is often very affordable. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery, then message your top picks with your campsite number, and you'll be sipping coffee lakeside without ever towing a thing.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/pokagon-state-park/How do mileage policies work, and how far can I travel from Fremont?
Mileage policies are simple and flexible. Each host sets a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer routes. Fremont sits near the crossroads of I-69 and the Indiana Toll Road, putting you within easy reach of great destinations: Indiana Dunes National Park (about 165 miles west), Mackinaw City, Michigan (about 245 miles north), Chicago (about 180 miles west), Holland, Michigan's beaches (about 160 miles), and Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio (about 200 miles east). Pro tip: estimate your full route before booking and message hosts about higher-mileage packages. Many will add miles upfront for less than paying per-mile overage at the end of your trip.
in.gov/indot/Where are the best campgrounds near Fremont, IN?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Fremont. Pokagon State Park (just a few miles south) offers hundreds of electric and non-electric sites on Lake James with a swimming beach, marina, and the famous refrigerated toboggan run. Trine State Recreation Area at Crooked Lake has electric sites, a beach, and quiet wooded loops. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort at Pigeon Lake (Hudson, IN, about 15 miles south) is a family favorite with pools and a splash pad. Several private parks in Steuben County round out the options. Pro tip: Pokagon books up to six months in advance through camp.in.gov, so set a calendar reminder for that window.
camp.in.gov/When is the best time of year for a Fremont RV trip?
Fremont is a true four-season destination, so the best time depends on your style. Late May through mid-September brings warm days (highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s) and ideal swimming weather at Lake James and Snow Lake. September and early October deliver brilliant fall color across Pokagon's 1,260 acres of woodlands with crisp 60-degree afternoons. Winter (December through February) is surprisingly magical, with the legendary Pokagon toboggan run hitting 40 mph and cross-country skiing on park trails. Spring shoulder season (April to mid-May) is the best value and the migratory birding season at the wetlands. Pro tip: book a winterized rig for a January toboggan weekend. It's a uniquely Fremont experience you won't find anywhere else in the Midwest.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/pokagon-state-park/Can I rent an RV in Fremont in winter for the Pokagon toboggan run?
Yes, and it's one of the coolest experiences in northern Indiana. Many Fremont hosts offer winter-ready RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces designed for sub-freezing nights. The Pokagon State Park toboggan run typically operates from late November through late February, sending riders down a quarter-mile refrigerated track at speeds up to roughly 35 to 40 mph. The campground stays open year-round with electric sites, and the Potawatomi Inn nearby is a cozy backup if temperatures plunge. Pro tip: when messaging a host, confirm the RV has shore-power hookups for an electric space heater and ask about skirting or insulation. Bring extra blankets, fill fresh water before arrival, and you'll have one of the most memorable Fremont RV trips on the books.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/pokagon-state-park/I've never rented an RV before. Is Fremont a good place to start?
Fremont is genuinely one of the friendliest places to try your first time renting an RV. Roads are flat, traffic is light outside summer weekends, and you're 6 miles from Pokagon's spacious pull-through sites, so you don't need to wrestle with tight backing maneuvers on day one. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the propane, water, slides, generator, and dump valves, and they're a text away during your trip. Choose a Class C motorhome (22 to 28 feet) for the best mix of space and easy driving. Pro tip: take a 15-minute test drive around the host's neighborhood before leaving, then point yourself toward Lake James for a stress-free first night under the stars.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/pokagon-state-park/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. One call connects you with a dispatcher who can send a technician to your campsite at Pokagon, a rest stop, or the shoulder of I-69. Your host is also a direct text away for quick questions like how to reset the inverter or relight the water heater. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and key system labels at pickup so you can share details quickly if you ever need help. It turns a potential headache into a short pit stop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fremont RV rental into Michigan or across state lines?
Yes, and Fremont's location practically begs for it. You're just a few miles from the Michigan border and a short drive from Ohio, making this one of the best launchpads for a multi-state RV road trip from Fremont. Most hosts allow travel throughout the continental United States, including Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes (about 280 miles), Ohio's Lake Erie shores (about 130 miles), and Kentucky's Mammoth Cave (about 360 miles). Cross-border travel to Canada may be permitted by individual hosts, so confirm directly before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a 3-day Michigan loop through Saugatuck and Holland is a perfect first multi-state run.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, so plan smart. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get roughly 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches sit around 6 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but typically drop your truck's mpg by 30 to 40 percent. Indiana gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, and stations along I-69 in Steuben County are convenient and competitive. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, budget $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Indiana before crossing into Michigan, where prices are usually higher, and use the GasBuddy app to spot the cheapest pumps along your route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Fremont?
Pokagon State Park is the crown jewel of the area, and it books up fast. Indiana State Parks open reservations exactly six months ahead through the Reserve America system (camp.in.gov), and summer weekends, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day frequently sell out within hours of release. For a stress-free trip, book Pokagon at least three to four months out, or aim for a Sunday-through-Thursday stay where availability is much easier. Trine State Recreation Area and private parks like Jellystone Pigeon Lake usually have more flexibility but still fill on holiday weekends. Pro tip: set up a free cancellation alert through services like Campnab, which texts you the instant a Pokagon site opens up.
camp.in.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Fremont?
Driving in and around Fremont is refreshingly easy. The terrain is gently rolling with no mountain passes, and I-69 and the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90) provide smooth four-lane access in every direction. County roads near Lake James can be narrow with tight turns and occasional low-hanging tree branches, so take it slow if you're in a tall Class A. Winter brings lake-effect snow squalls from late November through March, particularly on roads heading north into Michigan. Summer thunderstorms can be intense but short. Pro tip: check INDOT's TrafficWise map before you roll, and plan to arrive at your campground before dusk. Deer activity spikes at dawn and dusk across Steuben County's wooded areas.
in.gov/indot/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Fremont?
Northeast Indiana campgrounds are well-equipped. Pokagon State Park offers electric hookups (30 and 50 amp at most sites), modern bathhouses with hot showers, a camp store, a dump station, drinking water spigots, fire rings, and picnic tables. There are no individual sewer hookups at the state park, but the dump station handles your gray and black tanks on the way out. Private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone at Pigeon Lake offer full hookups including sewer, plus pools, mini-golf, and Wi-Fi. Trine State Recreation Area has electric sites and modern restrooms. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before pulling into Pokagon since spigots are shared between sites, and bring a 25-foot sewer hose for the dump station to make checkout quick and clean.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/pokagon-state-park/What's typically included inside the RV I rent?
Fremont motorhome rental and travel trailer listings come surprisingly well-stocked. Expect a full kitchen with a stove, microwave, fridge, and freezer, a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable beds (sleeping anywhere from 2 to 10 depending on the rig), a dinette that converts to a bed, climate control via roof AC and propane furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Most listings include a TV, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or a generator for boondocking. Class B campervan rental Fremont options are more compact but still include a kitchenette and wet bath. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and starter kit. Many hosts include linens, pots and pans, a coffee maker, and camp chairs so you can pack lighter and focus on the lake.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/pokagon-state-park/What add-ons and extras can I get with my Fremont RV rental?
Hosts offer all kinds of helpful add-ons to tailor your trip. Common extras include bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($10 to $25), generators ($30 to $60 per day), bike racks, kayak racks, paddleboards, fishing gear, propane fill-ups, and generator hours. Many Fremont hosts also offer delivery and setup to Pokagon State Park or Lake James lakehouses for a flat fee based on distance. Pickup and dropoff windows are usually flexible, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., but message the host to coordinate. Pro tip: bundle bedding, a generator, and delivery into one booking and you'll basically arrive to a turnkey lakeside cabin on wheels, ready for s'mores by sunset.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/pokagon-state-park/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is handled entirely through RVezy, so you never exchange cash or personal info with the host. You pay through the secure platform on a schedule shown at checkout, and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card separately from your booking payment. Assuming the RV is returned in the same condition, the hold is released after your trip per RVezy's standard timeline. Pro tip: do a detailed walk-around with your host at both pickup and return, take date-stamped photos and a short video of the interior and exterior, and you'll sail through deposit release without any back-and-forth. It's the simplest way to lock in a smooth RV rental in Fremont experience.
