Campgrounds near Griffith, Indiana
Griffith sits in Lake County in Northwest Indiana, roughly 30 miles southeast of Chicago and within easy reach of Lake Michigan's south shore. The town itself is compact and residential, so RV travelers typically base at private parks a short drive south around Cedar Lake, or head north toward the beaches and dunes for state and national park camping. Interstates 80/94 and 65 pass just north and east, making arrival straightforward for renters coming from the Chicago metro or from central Indiana.
Closest options include Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park and Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park, both near Cedar Lake. Emerald Trails Campground and Lakeshore Camp Resort provide additional private-park choices for longer stays.
For a public-lands trip, Indiana Dunes State Park is about a 40-minute drive north along Lake Michigan and pairs a lakeshore beach with an electric-hookup campground. Renters often mix a night or two at a private park near Griffith with a stay inside the state park.
Things to do near Griffith
The main draw is the Lake Michigan shoreline. Indiana Dunes State Park offers swimming, dune hikes, and beach days, while the adjacent Indiana Dunes National Park adds boardwalks, wetlands, and the Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm historic sites. Both are within roughly 40 minutes of Griffith by car or RV.
Closer to town, the Erie Lackawanna Trail is a paved rail-to-trail route that runs directly through Griffith and links to Highland and points north; it works well for family bike rides and stroller walks. Hoosier Prairie State Nature Preserve sits within Griffith and protects several hundred acres of tallgrass prairie with short interpretive trails.
Cedar Lake, south of town, is the local hub for boating, fishing, and lakeside dining. Downtown Chicago is reachable by South Shore Line commuter rail from nearby stations for a car-free day trip.

Peak RV season runs from late spring through early fall. Indiana Dunes State Park stays open year-round, while Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park operates from April through October and closes November through March. Private parks around Cedar Lake generally follow a similar April to October window, with limited shoulder-season availability.
Summer weekends fill quickly. The state park campground sits less than a mile from the beach and is one of the busiest in the state, so reservations should be locked in as far ahead as the six-month booking window allows. Weekdays and early June or late August tend to have more openings than mid-summer Saturdays.
Winters are cold and snowy on the south shore of Lake Michigan, with lake-effect snow common. Most private campgrounds shut down, though the state park remains open for day use and cold-weather camping. Spring brings the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival in May and cool, changeable weather; fall offers quieter beaches and turning hardwoods.
