Campgrounds near Grissom Air Force Base
Grissom Air Force Base sits in north-central Indiana just south of Peru, in Miami County. The area is flat farm country cut by the Mississinewa and Wabash rivers, and most camping options within a short drive fall into one of two categories: small private RV parks and the large state-managed campgrounds on nearby reservoirs.
The standout public option is Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake, part of a 14,386-acre reservoir property managed by the Indiana DNR with a campground of more than 400 sites and family cabins. Closer to the base, private grounds such as Misthaven Camp Resort, Tall Sycamore Campgrounds, Woodys Camp and Bait, and Spring Hill Campground offer smaller, quieter setups suited to RV travelers looking for hookups without a state-park reservation window.
Indianapolis is roughly 65 miles southwest and Fort Wayne about an hour and a half northeast, so the location works well as a base for regional trips or as an overnight stop off US 31.
Things to do near Grissom Air Force Base
Mississinewa Lake is the main draw. The 3,210-acre reservoir supports fishing, boating, and swimming, with a sandy beach open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and no lifeguards on duty. The surrounding property mixes forest, prairie, and farmland with hiking and biking trails. Anglers target bass, walleye, and crappie under standard Indiana fishing regulations.
On land, Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake carries several marked trails, including the Blue Heron Trail with lake and dam views, the Moswa Trail along Troyer's Creek, and the Shepoconnah Trail behind the modern campground. Interpretive programs are run by the Upper Wabash Interpretive Services staff. The town of Peru, a short drive north, adds circus history museums and small-town dining for a rest-day option.

The main camping season at Mississinewa Lake runs May 1 through October 31, with all facilities open by May 15 and the beach open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The lake sits at normal summer pool by around May 1, and a winter drawdown begins in early October and completes by December 1. All boat ramps close through winter except Red Bridge.
Summer holiday weekends, especially the Fourth of July, book up first. Fall brings cooler nights, changing hardwoods, and lighter crowds as the drawdown gets underway.
Camping is available year round at Mississinewa, but service is limited off-season. Blue-green algae is present in area lakes year round, so the DNR advises against drinking the water and recommends showering after swimming.
How to book
Sites at Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake are booked through the Indiana DNR reservation system, which is run in partnership with ReserveAmerica. Electric and non-electric campsites can be reserved up to six months ahead of the arrival date, with the daily cutoff at 2 p.m. Eastern on the day of arrival. Rent-a-camp cabins and shelters open a full year out.
A single site can be held for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights, after which the camper must vacate for 48 hours before rebooking. Two vehicles are allowed per site, with overflow parking near the campground gatehouse. The minimum age to rent a site is 18.
Private grounds such as Misthaven Camp Resort, Tall Sycamore Campgrounds, Woodys Camp and Bait, and Spring Hill Campground book directly through the operator.
What to expect
The Mississinewa campground sits on open terrain close to the lake shore. Sites are a mix of electric-only and full hookup, with gravel parking pads, picnic tables, and fire rings on grass. Most sites are sunny rather than wooded, and some back-to-back layouts mean limited privacy between neighbors. The camp store stocks ice, firewood, and basic supplies, and restrooms and shower houses are spread across the grounds.
RV travelers should note that rent-a-camp cabins on the property have electricity but no heat or air conditioning. Public Wi-Fi is available in places but can be intermittent. Camping is available year round, though services are limited outside the May-through-October window, so late-fall arrivals should plan accordingly.
