Campgrounds and RV parks near Hamilton, IN

Water dominates the itinerary. Hamilton Lake holds northern pike, small and largemouth bass, perch, bluegill, and crappie, and allows speedboats, sailboats, jet skis, and water skiing, with a free public boat launch. Large bass tournaments run nearly every weekend in the warm months. At Pokagon State Park, families can hike the trails, swim at the Lake James beach, rent boats in summer, and visit the nature center. In winter, the park operates cross-country ski rental, sledding, ice fishing, and a quarter-mile refrigerated twin-track toboggan run reaching 35 to 40 mph, open weekends from the Friday after Thanksgiving through February with extended hours during the Christmas holidays. Off the water, Buck Lake Ranch hosts concerts through the camping season, and Auburn's auto and aviation museums are a short drive south.

The Hamilton area has a true four-season climate. Camping is possible year round at Pokagon State Park, and the busiest window runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when campers use the swimming beach and warm-weather activities from hiking to volleyball. Summer weekends are the peak stretch across every campground in Steuben County, and holiday weekends fill first. Shoulder-season conditions arrive in April and October. Standard camping rates at Pokagon run from late April through early November, regular services resume in mid-March to late April depending on weather, and full services are available May through October. Private parks such as Happy Acres Campground and Fish Lake Family Resort generally follow the same warm-season window. Winter is quieter but not closed. When temperatures fall in November, Pokagon's campgrounds switch to winter rates and services, and Campground 3 stays open all winter with one heated comfort station and a water fill station. Snow typically arrives by November, cross-country ski trails and the toboggan run stay open through February depending on weather, and crowds return over the Christmas holidays.

Pokagon is the largest and most amenity-rich option in the area. The park has 200 electric (Class A) sites in Campgrounds 1, 3, 4, and 5, ADA-accessible sites in Campground 3, and 73 non-electric (Class B) sites in Campground 2. Check-in is 2 p.m., except Sundays and designated holidays when it is 5 p.m., and a camp store, showers, and playgrounds are on site. Private parks near Hamilton lean smaller and more casual. Expect a mix of seasonal and nightly sites, gravel or grass pads, and lake or pond access. Cell coverage is generally reliable but can be patchy in wooded loops. Collecting firewood in state parks is prohibited; firewood is sold at the park concession or campground store. Blue-green algae can occur in area lakes year round, so do not drink the water and shower after swimming.
