Campgrounds near Heritage Lake, Indiana
Heritage Lake sits in Putnam County in west-central Indiana, roughly forty minutes west of Indianapolis and within easy reach of two large reservoirs managed for camping and recreation. The private lake community itself is gated and reserved for residents, so RV travelers typically stay at nearby state and private campgrounds and use the area as a base for exploring the surrounding lakes, covered-bridge country, and small county parks.
The closest developed options include Misty Morning Campground, Sunny Acres Lake Lieber State Recreation Area, and Hickory Hills Campground. A short drive southwest brings travelers to Lieber State Recreation Area on the 1,400-acre Cagles Mill Lake, and further west to Cecil M. Harden Lake, a 2,060-acre reservoir created for flood control by damming Big Raccoon Creek.
Fallen Rock Campground and Raccoon State Recreation Area round out the nearby options, giving families a mix of electric and non-electric loops, water fill stations, and primitive tent areas within about an hour of Heritage Lake.
Things to do near Heritage Lake
Water activities anchor most trips. Cecil M. Harden Lake offers boating with boat rentals, fishing, and a large swimming beach with concessions, along with hiking trails, an archery range, playgrounds, and a paved multi-use path for biking and walking. At Lieber, visitors find a swim beach, boat launch and rentals, an aquatic center, a nature center, and space for picnics and pickup games.
Off the water, families can visit the nearby Historic Mansfield Roller Mill, a preserved 1880s flour mill that shows how flour and cornmeal were processed at the turn of the 20th century. Cataract Falls is about a twenty-minute drive from Lieber, and Parke County's covered bridges are a short drive west. Hickory Hills Campground and Fallen Rock Campground add quieter, wooded settings for evenings around a fire.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the beaches, pools, and boat ramps at Lieber and Raccoon are fully staffed and sites fill quickly on weekends. Summer is the strongest window for lake activities and full facilities, so weekend bookings should be locked in well ahead.
Spring and fall are quieter and often more comfortable for RV travel. Spring brings mild weather and quieter trails as facilities reopen, and fall delivers vivid foliage with lighter midweek crowds. Fall forest colors are especially vivid in October, when Parke County holds its nine-day Covered Bridge Festival, which draws heavy day-use traffic to the Raccoon Lake area.
Winter camping is limited but possible. At Raccoon State Recreation Area, one electric loop and the primitive campground stay open in winter at reduced rates, though comfort stations are closed. Lieber State Recreation Area is also listed as open year round, with reduced services outside the main season.

Richard was very responsive to any questions that I had prior to picking unit up. Trailer was very clean and still looks like new inside. Had all the basic necessities both inside and out to ensure easy set-up. Would highly recommend this unit if you are camping in Indy area. Donnie Luce-CA

I had a great vacation and the ease of renting the camper made it so much better than staying in a hotel. Richard made it an easy transaction and was there if I needed any help. The camper was accommodating, very clean and comfortable to sleep in. I won't hesitate to do this again in the future and look forward to having another fulfilled adventure.

How to book campgrounds near Heritage Lake
Indiana state park campgrounds, including Lieber State Recreation Area and Raccoon State Recreation Area, are reserved through the Indiana DNR reservation system operated on ReserveAmerica. For most standard sites, reservations can be made for today and up to six months in advance. Certain premium or group sites use a different window, requiring reservations to be made at least two days ahead of arrival and up to twelve months out.
Cecil M. Harden Lake also has U.S. Army Corps of Engineers day-use areas listed on Recreation.gov, so trip planners should confirm which agency operates a specific loop before booking. Private options such as Misty Morning Campground, Hickory Hills Campground, and Fallen Rock Campground book directly through the operator. Weekends in June, July, and August, plus Covered Bridge Festival dates in October, should be reserved as early as possible.
What to expect
Sites at the state recreation areas are typically wooded with electric hookups; full hookups are limited. At Lieber, Class A sites are electric only at 30 amp with water spigots positioned throughout the campground, plus a smaller number of Class B full-hookup sites. At Raccoon, the campground is well maintained with many sites sheltered by tree canopy, ranging from non-electric to 30 amp to 50 amp, with fresh water fill stations and a spacious dump station. Many Raccoon sites are not level, so choose carefully.
Cell service can be spotty in parts of both parks, so download maps in advance. A blue-green algae advisory is periodically posted for both Cagles Mill Lake and Cecil M. Harden Lake beaches; swimming and boating remain permitted, but visitors should avoid contact with algae. An Indiana fishing license is required for anyone fishing the reservoirs, and standard state-park entrance fees apply in addition to camping fees.
