Campgrounds and RV parks near Highland, IN

Harmonie State Park sits along the Wabash River and offers hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, a boat launch, and a swimming pool with waterslide. The adjacent town of New Harmony preserves the utopian communities of the Rappites and Owenites and makes a common day trip from area campgrounds. Across the Ohio River, John James Audubon State Park centers on the naturalist's legacy through the Audubon Museum and Nature Center. The park has hiking trails, a 28-acre lake stocked with catfish, bluegill, and bass, pedal boat and canoe rentals in warmer months, and a nine-hole golf course. Fishing requires a valid Kentucky license. Closer to Highland, downtown Evansville adds a riverfront, museums, and dining within a short drive.

Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year around Evansville. Regional rainfall peaks in April and May, with May averaging the most rainy days, so low-lying sites along the Wabash and Ohio floodplains can be soft after heavy rain. Harmonie State Park's campground sits on ground shaped by the Wabash floodplain, worth noting when planning early-season trips. Summer is the peak booking window. Popular weekends fill quickly at Harmonie and John James Audubon, so plan several weeks ahead. Humidity is often uncomfortable in July and August, and shaded sites are worth prioritizing. Fall offers milder days and thinning crowds, but the Kentucky side has a hard cutoff: John James Audubon State Park's campground season runs March 15 to November 10. Winter camping in the area is limited, and Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee water availability at campgrounds during months when freezing temperatures are possible, so contact the park directly if traveling then.

Harmonie State Park's campground has about 200 sites, most with electric only and shared water spigots around each loop. A small number of higher-numbered sites offer electric plus water, and a few provide full hookups. Facilities include five bath houses, two dump stations, and picnic table and fire ring at each site. The drive from the entrance to the loops is roughly three miles, and sites are shaded and generously spaced. John James Audubon State Park has a smaller campground with standard and primitive sites for tents and RVs, a bathhouse, and access to park amenities. Kentucky prohibits importing firewood from outside the state, so buy locally or from the park store. Private parks in the area generally cater to RVs with electric hookups and basic amenities; confirm specifics with the operator when booking.
