Huntington camping overview
Huntington sits in northeast Indiana between two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood-control reservoirs: J. Edward Roush Lake just south of town and Salamonie Lake, a 2,665-acre lake property with 12,554 land acres managed by the DNR Division of State Parks about twenty minutes west. Both reservoirs anchor a cluster of state recreation areas that make the region a practical base for RV renters exploring north-central Indiana.
To the west, the DNR manages several properties on Salamonie Lake, including Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area, Lost Bridge East SRA, Dora-New Holland SRA, Mount Etna SRA, and Mount Hope SRA, with Lost Bridge West holding most of the drive-in camping. Kil-So-Quah State Recreation Area sits on Roush Lake within Huntington County, though its campground has closed indefinitely and campers should confirm status with the DNR before planning a stay there.
RV renters typically choose between the Modern loop at Lost Bridge West for full utilities and the Apple Orchard Primitive or Horsemens Camp loops for quieter, no-hookup stays. Camp Timber Lake, a private option, rounds out the area for families wanting activity-driven amenities.
Things to do near Huntington
Water recreation drives most trips. Salamonie Lake covers a 2,855-acre reservoir for boating, swimming and fishing, with horse riding, hiking, mountain bike and snowmobile trails, an interpretive nature center, a 9,000-acre hunting area and a marina. Catfish, walleye, largemouth bass, bluegill and crappie can be caught in the lake, and a state fishing license is required.
Pirate's Cove Marina at Lost Bridge West offers slip rentals along with boat rentals, food, marine and camping supplies at the marina store. A disc golf course sits within walking distance of the Modern campground, and the Upper Wabash Interpretive Services Center runs programs throughout the season.
Roush Lake adds paddling, birding, and shoreline fishing, though swimming is prohibited there. Downtown Huntington offers grocery resupply and the Dan Quayle Center a short drive from the reservoirs.

Prime RV season runs late April through mid-October. Summer weekends draw the heaviest demand at Lost Bridge West, and water-view sites fill quickly during peak months, making reservations essential for lakefront positions. Weekday arrivals see softer competition even in midsummer.
Spring brings variable temperatures and higher rain totals, but green-up along the Salamonie and Wabash river corridors is a strong reason to visit. Fall is a favorite window, with cooler nights starting in late September and foliage color drawing weekend crowds. Reviewers commonly report deer sightings and eagle activity around the reservoirs.
Winter camping is limited but available. Lost Bridge West provides year-round camping with electric hookups for larger RVs, while primitive loops such as Apple Orchard and Horsemens Camp typically reduce services once temperatures drop and water systems are winterized. Snow and freeze-thaw cycles can make primitive access roads rough, and hunting seasons open in designated wildlife areas outside the recreation-area boundaries.

This was not just another camper rental. This was a true Air BnB experience. The trailer was immaculate and didn't miss a beat all weekend. The back patio area was amazing and trailer was spotless. Melissa and her husband crossed the t's and dotted all the i's on this rental from top to bottom: from communication, to drop off and pick up, everything was as smooth as could be. A great experience that we will definitely rent again one day!

Booking a campsite near Huntington
State-managed sites at Salamonie Lake are reserved through the Indiana DNR portal at Camp.IN.gov or by calling 1-866-622-6746. The maximum booking window is six months prior to arrival, and holiday weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the first to sell out. Same-day walk-ups may be possible off-peak but are not reliable in summer.
When choosing a loop, the Modern campground at Lost Bridge West suits larger rigs needing electric service, while Apple Orchard Primitive and Horsemens Camp fit smaller RVs and vans comfortable without hookups. Check-in and check-out is 2:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, shifting to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays and designated holidays. Camp Timber Lake books directly through its own website.
Confirm rig length limits, generator hours, and pet policies at time of booking, as rules differ by loop.
What to expect on arrival
Expect a staffed entrance gate at Lost Bridge West and a short drive to the registration office or self-service kiosk. DNR staff check in daily, and raccoons are active at night, so food and gear should be secured accordingly. Cell coverage is generally usable but spotty in the tree-covered loops.
Roads inside the Modern campground are paved or well-graded gravel. Some primitive sites require navigating rougher access roads, particularly after heavy spring rain. Filling up on water at the fill station before pulling into a site avoids backtracking with a loaded rig.
Shower buildings, potable water, dump stations, and a camp store are within the recreation area. Bring bug spray in early summer and plan for firewood on site, since transporting untreated wood across county lines is discouraged.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Huntington, IN
How much does an RV rental in Huntington cost?
Renting an RV in Huntington is an affordable way to explore northeast Indiana, with most travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes typically running $175 to $275 per night on RVezy. Pricing depends on the season, the size of the rig, and add-ons like generators or camping gear. To score a cheap RV rental in Huntington, aim for weekday pickups, book outside the June through August peak, and consider a travel trailer if you already have a tow vehicle. Many Huntington hosts include starter kits with kitchenware and linens, which can save you from packing it all yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington,IndianaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Huntington?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Huntington for nearly every rig on RVezy. Indiana only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for vehicles over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating, and almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform falls well below that threshold. RVezy approved drivers must be 25 or older with a valid license, and identity is verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home-country license with an International Driving Permit and you are set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat's included for protection and peace of mind on my Huntington RV rental?
Every RV rental in Huntington booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the trip instead of the what-ifs. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the vehicle and gives real financial peace of mind. During checkout you choose from different protection tiers so you can match the coverage level to your comfort zone (this is set by RVezy, not the host). If something goes sideways on I-69 or a back road near Roush Lake, one phone call gets help dispatched. That safety net is a big reason first-time renters feel confident hitting the road from Huntington.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Huntington RV rental?
Booking is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you have time to confirm plans. After that, refunds depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. You can review the exact terms before you confirm payment, and RVezy support is available if plans change. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip stays protected. Lock in your Huntington RV trip early for the best selection, knowing flexibility is built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Huntington?
Absolutely, and Huntington is a fantastic spot for dog-friendly camping. Many Huntington hosts list pet-friendly RV rentals on RVezy, just filter by Pet-Friendly to see them instantly. Once you are on the road, J. Edward Roush Lake allows leashed pets on most trails, and Salamonie Lake's Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area welcomes dogs at campsites on a six-foot leash. Bring waste bags, a tie-out, and a water bowl. Message the host before booking to mention your pup's size and breed, confirm any cleaning fee, and ask about their favorite local dog-walking loops near the campground.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/j-edward-roush-lake-huntington-lake/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Huntington?
Yes, RV delivery in Huntington is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many local hosts on RVezy offer delivery and setup directly to Kil-So-Quah Campground at Roush Lake, Lost Bridge West at Salamonie Lake, or even a friend's driveway in town. The host arrives, levels the rig, connects water and electric, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter listings by Delivery to see who offers it and the per-mile fee, which is typically $2 to $4 within 30 miles of Huntington. This is the move for first-time renters who would rather skip the towing learning curve and jump straight into vacation mode.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington,IndianaHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Huntington?
Huntington's northeast Indiana location makes it a great launchpad for road trips in every direction. Indianapolis is about 95 miles southwest (under two hours), Indiana Dunes National Park sits roughly 175 miles northwest along Lake Michigan, and Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio is around 230 miles southeast. Heading north? Mackinaw City, Michigan is about 350 miles for that classic Great Lakes escape. Most RVezy hosts in Huntington offer between 100 and 200 free miles per day, with extra miles typically $0.30 to $0.45 each. Ask your host about an RV rental with unlimited mileage, several Huntington owners offer it for longer bookings, which is a big win on multi-state loops.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington,IndianaWhere are the best campgrounds near Huntington for RV camping?
You have several excellent options within 30 minutes of town. Kil-So-Quah Campground at J. Edward Roush Lake sits right in Huntington and offers electric sites with a peaceful forest setting. Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area at Salamonie Lake, about 15 miles southwest, has electric sites, a beach, marina, and modern bathhouses. Mississinewa Lake's Miami State Recreation Area is roughly 25 miles south with electric sites and full amenities. For a smaller private feel, look at nearby private RV parks with full hookups. Indiana State Park campsites book through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources reservation system up to six months in advance at camp.IN.gov.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/salamonie-lake/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Huntington?
Late April through mid-October is prime RV camping season in Huntington, with summer highs averaging in the low 80s Fahrenheit and pleasant evenings ideal for campfires. May and September are the sweet spot, fewer crowds at Roush Lake, lower nightly rates, and comfortable 60 to 75 degree days. July and August get humid, often in the mid-80s with sticky nights, so look for a rig with strong air conditioning. Fall foliage along the Salamonie River peaks in mid-October and is genuinely stunning. Winter camping is possible at some private parks if you book a four-season RV, but January averages in the mid-20s with regular snow, so most travelers stick to spring through fall.
weather.gov/iwx/I have never driven an RV before. Can I really do this?
Yes, and Huntington is a forgiving place to learn. Most first-time renters start with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer, both drive much like a large truck. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, generator use, and waste tanks, no one hands you the keys and waves goodbye. Huntington's quiet US-24 and State Road 5 corridors are great for getting comfortable before you point toward bigger destinations. If highway driving still feels intimidating, book a host who offers delivery, your motorhome rental in Huntington shows up at the campsite fully set up. Your host is also a text away throughout the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong on the road during my Huntington RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed, whether you are on I-69 heading to Fort Wayne or down a county road near Salamonie Lake. One phone call gets help dispatched to your location. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick questions like how to reset the inverter or where the propane shutoff is. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN and roadside assistance number at pickup so you have it handy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Huntington RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most Huntington RV rentals, and northeast Indiana is perfectly positioned for a multi-state road trip from Huntington. Popular routes include heading east to Ohio's Hocking Hills (about 230 miles), south to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky (around 300 miles), or north to Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes (roughly 330 miles). Canada is allowed by many hosts with advance approval, just message before booking to confirm and let RVezy know so insurance coverage is updated. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Ask your host upfront about any state restrictions so your itinerary is locked in before pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Huntington?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it is manageable in Indiana where gas prices tend to run near or slightly below the national average. Expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, and 12 to 18 MPG for a tow vehicle with a travel trailer. A weekend trip from Huntington to Salamonie Lake and back (under 50 miles round-trip) might cost $25 to $40 in fuel, while a five-day loop to Indiana Dunes and back could run $150 to $250. Pilot and Love's truck stops along I-69 near Fort Wayne have RV-friendly pumps with high-flow diesel and easy pull-through access.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Huntington?
Indiana state campgrounds open reservations six months ahead through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources reservation system at camp.IN.gov, and that is exactly when popular weekends at Salamonie Lake's Lost Bridge West and Mississinewa Lake start filling up. For Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends, book the moment the window opens. Mid-week stays in May, September, and October are far easier and you can often grab a great site just a week or two out. Once your RVezy booking is confirmed, reserve your campsite right away so the two dates line up perfectly.
camp.IN.govWhat are driving conditions like around Huntington?
Huntington offers some of the easiest RV driving you will find in the Midwest. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, highways like US-24 and I-69 are wide and well-maintained, and traffic is light outside Fort Wayne rush hour. Watch for occasional low railroad bridges in town (stick to the marked truck routes on US-24 and State Road 9), and be ready for sudden summer thunderstorms with crosswinds, especially on open stretches near Roush Lake. Winter can bring snow squalls from late November through February. Plan fuel stops in larger towns like Huntington, Wabash, or Fort Wayne where pull-through diesel access is easier than at smaller country stations.
in.gov/indot/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Huntington?
Campgrounds in the Huntington area generally fall into two camps: Indiana DNR state recreation areas with electric hookups, modern restrooms, and dump stations (like Lost Bridge West at Salamonie Lake), and private parks offering full water, electric, and sewer hookups. Kil-So-Quah at Roush Lake is more rustic with electric sites and limited facilities, but charming and affordable. Most state campgrounds have a central dump station and a potable water fill, and Salamonie Lake adds a marina, beach, and camp store. Top off your fresh water before pulling into Kil-So-Quah, and plan one dump stop on the way home.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/salamonie-lake/What features and equipment do Huntington RV rentals come with?
Most RVs on the RVezy platform come fully equipped for a comfortable Huntington getaway: a real bed (usually a queen, plus convertible dinette and bunks in family rigs), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, a roof air conditioner, furnace, and a propane or onboard generator for off-grid power. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and seatbelted seating for everyone on the road. Wi-Fi varies, so confirm with your host if it matters. Cold-weather rigs with heated holding tanks are available for shoulder-season trips. Check the listing's sleeps count and seatbelt count separately, they are not always the same.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington,IndianaWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Huntington?
Huntington hosts on RVezy often offer popular add-ons that make camping easier: bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and even fishing gear, perfect for Salamonie Lake. Standard pickup is at the host's location in or near Huntington, usually with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Delivery to area campgrounds is widely available for a per-mile fee. Most listings include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with overage at $0.30 to $0.45 per mile. Bundle add-ons when you book rather than adding later, hosts often discount packages and you will skip a last-minute store run before you leave town.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington,IndianaHow does payment and the security deposit work for my Huntington RV rental?
Payment is handled securely through RVezy, never directly with the host, so your booking is protected from start to finish. You will pay a portion at booking and the balance before your trip begins, all by credit card through the platform. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is separate from your booking payment and is pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup, then released after the trip wraps up cleanly. To avoid deductions, do a thorough walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the fuel and propane at the same levels, and empty the holding tanks if the listing requires it. Photograph the dashboard, tank levels, and any existing scuffs at pickup for a smooth deposit refund.
