Camping near Jonesboro, Indiana
Jonesboro sits in Grant County along the Mississinewa River in east-central Indiana, roughly an hour north of Indianapolis and about 45 minutes south of Fort Wayne via I-69. The area is flat farm country with river corridors and small reservoirs, and it functions as a practical base for RV travelers moving between Indianapolis, Muncie, and the Upper Wabash lake region.
Most campgrounds within a short drive of Jonesboro are privately owned RV parks with full or partial hookups, plus a mix of tent sites. Marbrook Campground sits off I-69 at the Gas City exit and leans family-oriented, with a pool, playground, arcade, and a creek section for tents. Sports Lake Campground, in nearby Marion, is built around a private 11-acre lake and offers 30 and 50 amp sites with pull-throughs suited to larger rigs.
Hidden Lake Campground and Wildwood Outdoor Escape round out the private options, while White Oaks Mobile Home Park serves longer-term stays. For a state-managed experience with more shoreline, Mississinewa Lake is about 30 to 40 minutes northwest.
Things to do around Jonesboro
Water recreation is the main draw. Mississinewa Lake is an Army Corps of Engineers reservoir with a swim beach, boat ramps, and fishing areas managed in partnership with the Indiana DNR at the Miami, Red Bridge, Frances Slocum, and Pearson Mill State Recreation Areas. Salamonie Lake, also part of the Upper Wabash chain, adds more boating and shoreline trails within about an hour's drive.
Closer to camp, Sports Lake Campground has an on-site stocked lake, mini golf, a pool, and a basketball court, and Marbrook Campground runs a pool, arcade, snack bar, and putt-putt aimed at kids. Day trips include Gas City's parks, the Mississinewa River corridor, and the Quilters Hall of Fame in nearby Marion.

The main camping season in the Jonesboro area runs from roughly mid-April through mid-October. Marbrook Campground operates on about that window, and other private parks lean heavily seasonal, with weekend activity programming ramping up on holiday weekends. At Mississinewa Lake, all facilities are open by mid-May, and the swim beach opens Memorial Day weekend and closes after Labor Day.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends fill quickly, especially at waterfront sites on Mississinewa Lake. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and foliage color through October, and it is often the best window for larger RVs seeking quieter loops.
Winter access is limited. The Army Corps conducts a winter drawdown at Mississinewa Lake that begins in early October and is complete by December 1, and all boat ramps close through winter except Red Bridge. Many private campgrounds shut down services entirely between November and April.
How to book near Jonesboro
State-managed sites at Mississinewa Lake are reserved through the Indiana DNR's ReserveAmerica portal or by calling 1-866-622-6746. The maximum booking window is six months in advance of arrival, and some sites remain first-come, first-served from November through April. Booking early is recommended for summer weekends, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day.
Private campgrounds handle bookings directly. Sports Lake Campground and Marbrook Campground take reservations by phone or through their websites. Hidden Lake Campground, Wildwood Outdoor Escape, and White Oaks Mobile Home Park should be contacted directly for availability, hookup type, and rig-length limits before towing in.
What to expect around Jonesboro
Terrain around Jonesboro is flat to gently rolling with a mix of open, sunny sites and tree-lined loops. Sports Lake Campground reportedly accommodates rigs up to 70 feet with full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, and pull-through options, so most Class A and fifth-wheel setups fit without issue. Marbrook offers 30 amp full-hookup sites for weekenders plus a separate creek section for tents and small campers.
Expect a heavy seasonal-camper presence at private parks, which means golf-cart traffic and stricter quiet-hour rules. Cell service can be spotty at Marbrook, and interstate noise carries at sites closest to I-69. Pets are generally welcome on leash, and most parks require visitors to park in designated lots.
