Campgrounds and RV parks near Kendallville, IN

The chain of small kettle lakes is the main draw. At Chain O Lakes State Park, paddlers can move between connected lakes by canoe or kayak, and the park restricts boats to trolling or electric motors, which keeps the water quiet. The park has roughly 29 miles of forested trails, a nature center in the restored one-room Stanley Schoolhouse, a swim beach, family cabins, and rental boats in season. Off the water, families visit the Mid-America Windmill Museum in Kendallville, which displays more than 50 restored windmills and is open April through November, the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site at nearby Rome City, and the small downtowns of Albion and Ligonier. Fishing on the surrounding lakes is popular for bass and panfish, and an Indiana fishing license is required for anglers age 18 to 64.

The practical RV season in the Kendallville area runs from late April through mid-October. Most private resorts open around the start of fishing season and close after the leaves drop, while Chain O Lakes State Park remains open year-round with reduced amenities from November through April, when water is shut off, modern restrooms close, and full-hookup sites are winterized. Spring is cool and wet. Lake levels are high, mosquitoes increase by late May, and shoulder-season weekends are quieter than summer. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and weekend campgrounds filling well in advance, especially around the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Blue-green algae is present in the park's lakes year-round, so swimmers are advised to rinse off after entering the water and not to drink from the lakes. Fall brings strong color through the hardwoods in early to mid-October and is a favorite window for RV travelers who want cool nights and open sites. Winter camping is possible at the state park but limited to self-contained rigs comfortable in freezing temperatures.

Sites in this region are typically level grass or gravel pads under mature hardwoods, with fire rings and picnic tables standard. At Chain O Lakes State Park, expect electric hookups at most reservable sites, a dump station, showers, and a camp store, with full-hookup sites available in limited numbers and winterized from November through April. Quiet hours run from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. and check-in is in the afternoon. Private resorts in the area lean more toward full hookups, swimming pools, playgrounds, and weekend activities aimed at families. Cell coverage is generally reliable on the major carriers. Pets are welcome at most parks on a leash. An Indiana state park entrance fee applies per vehicle for day use, with a higher rate for out-of-state plates.
