Camping near Knightsville, Indiana
Knightsville is a small town in Van Buren Township, Clay County, in west-central Indiana. It sits along the old National Road corridor just east of Brazil and roughly 15 miles east of Terre Haute, placing it within easy driving distance of Interstate 70. The town itself covers about one square mile and had a population of 702 at the 2020 census.
For RV travelers, Knightsville works as a low-traffic base for exploring two Indiana DNR lake properties. Cecil M. Harden Lake at Raccoon State Recreation Area lies northwest near Rockville, and Cagles Mill Lake at Lieber State Recreation Area lies northeast near Cloverdale, off I-70 exit 37 at Putnamville. Both are managed under the Indiana DNR reservation system and draw the bulk of overnight demand in the area.
Closer to town, private options include Fallen Rock Campground, Willow Rose RV Park, and Misty Morning Campground, which fill in the gaps for travelers who want hookups, shorter stays, or last-minute sites.
Things to do near Knightsville
Water recreation is the main draw. Cecil M. Harden Lake covers about 2,060 acres and supports boating, fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish, swimming at a sand beach, boat rentals, and paddling on Big Raccoon Creek. Cagles Mill Lake covers about 1,400 acres and is a flood-control reservoir popular for pleasure boating, small houseboats, and sport fishing.
On land, Raccoon SRA has hiking trails through hardwoods and sandstone outcrops, an archery trail, playgrounds, and a paved multi-use path from the gatehouse. Lieber SRA includes an aquatic center with a zero-entry pool, a nature center, and easy access to Cataract Falls, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive from the campground.
Off-park attractions include the working Historic Mansfield Roller Mill, Parke County covered bridges, and community events in nearby Brazil.

The area has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Camping demand is heaviest from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Indiana DNR sites at Raccoon SRA and Lieber SRA book out well in advance for weekends and holidays. July is the warmest month, with average daily highs near 87 degrees Fahrenheit and higher humidity, so shaded loops and electric sites for a fan or air conditioning are worth targeting.
Spring brings the wettest stretch, with May averaging roughly five inches of rain and thunderstorms common. April into early June is a good window for lower crowds, cooler nights, and active fishing, but expect muddy sites after storms.
Fall shifts to cooler, drier weather. September tends to be among the driest months, foliage peaks in mid to late October, and Parke County holds its nine-day Covered Bridge Festival in October, which spikes demand at Raccoon SRA. Winter camping is possible at Raccoon SRA, which is listed as open year round, though services are reduced and freezing temperatures are typical from December through February.

Richard was very responsive to any questions that I had prior to picking unit up. Trailer was very clean and still looks like new inside. Had all the basic necessities both inside and out to ensure easy set-up. Would highly recommend this unit if you are camping in Indy area. Donnie Luce-CA

I had a great vacation and the ease of renting the camper made it so much better than staying in a hotel. Richard made it an easy transaction and was there if I needed any help. The camper was accommodating, very clean and comfortable to sleep in. I won't hesitate to do this again in the future and look forward to having another fulfilled adventure.

Great stay in this camper. It literally has everything you need or cooking, cleaning and comfort. They truly thought everything through and it made our life a whole lot easier. They had everything set up and ready to go and came and picked it up when we were done. Great stay!

How to book campgrounds near Knightsville
State park sites at Raccoon State Recreation Area and Sunny Acres Lake Lieber State Recreation Area are reserved through the Indiana DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica or by calling 1-866-622-6746. Standard family campsites can generally be booked up to six months ahead of arrival, while shelters and some other site types allow booking up to twelve months out with a two-day advance requirement. Any sites left unbooked are released as first-come, first-served on the day of arrival.
For summer weekends, holidays, and the October Covered Bridge Festival, book as soon as the window opens. Private campgrounds nearby, including Fallen Rock Campground, Willow Rose RV Park, and Misty Morning Campground, are booked directly with each operator and often have more flexibility for shorter stays and last-minute arrivals.
What to expect on the ground
State recreation area campgrounds around Knightsville offer a mix of Class A electric sites and Class B non-electric sites, most tucked under hardwood canopy. Amenities typically include flush toilets in season, shower buildings, a dump station, drinking-water fill stations, playgrounds, and a seasonal camp store. Individual water hookups are uncommon, electric service at Lieber runs at 30 amp, and some loops require significant leveling due to sloped terrain.
Check-in and check-out at Indiana DNR properties is 2 p.m., moving to 5 p.m. on Sundays and designated holidays. Firewood rules are strict: only kiln-dried, debarked, or state-stamped wood is allowed on DNR properties.
Cell service can be spotty inside the parks, especially at Lieber SRA. Blue-green algae advisories are posted on Indiana reservoirs year round, so avoid drinking lake water and shower after swimming.
