Campgrounds near Kokomo
Kokomo sits in north-central Indiana, roughly an hour north of Indianapolis, and serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Wabash River corridor and the Upper Wabash reservoirs. Most nearby campgrounds cluster within a 45-minute drive, ranging from private RV parks to a large state-managed lake campground.
The standout public option is Mississinewa Lake, one of the three Upper Wabash flood-control reservoirs, which features a 400-plus-site campground and family cabins, and was the first state property in Indiana to introduce seasonal camping. Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake is the primary camping unit on the reservoir and is managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Private options round out the choices for RV renters. Spring Hill Campground, Woodys Camp and Bait, Tall Sycamore Campgrounds, and Misthaven Camp Resort provide alternatives with varying hookup levels, on-site fishing, and family amenities. Together they cover most trip styles, from quick overnight stops off US-31 to week-long lake-based stays.
Things to do around Kokomo
Water recreation drives most trip planning in the area. Mississinewa Lake offers fishing, hunting, and boating opportunities in the heart of north-central Indiana, and visitors can swim at the beach area and boat on the lake, with options for both relaxed cruising and water sports like tubing and skiing. Woodys Camp and Bait is convenient for anglers who want tackle and bait close to their site.
On land, the mix of forests, meadows, and farmland surrounding the lake supports wildlife viewing for hikers, bird watchers, and cyclists. Blue Heron, Moswa, and Shepoconnah trails at Miami SRA cross meadows, creek corridors, and lake overlooks. In Kokomo itself, the Kokomo Automotive Heritage Museum, Highland Park, and the Wildcat Creek trail system add easy in-town options between longer excursions.

The main camping season runs from mid-spring through early fall. At Mississinewa Lake, all facilities are open May 15th, the beach opens Memorial Day weekend and closes after Labor Day weekend, with no lifeguards on duty and swimming at your own risk from dawn to dusk. Summer weekends, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day, book earliest.
Shoulder seasons work well for RV renters who want cooler temperatures and easier availability. Late April through mid-May and September into mid-October bring mild days and lighter crowds, though spring rain and high water on the Upper Wabash system can affect low-lying access roads and boat ramps.
Winter access is limited. Winter draw down begins at the beginning of October and is complete by December 1st, and all ramps are closed through winter except Red Bridge. Most private campgrounds near Kokomo close or scale back services once overnight temperatures drop consistently below freezing.
How to book a campsite near Kokomo
Public sites at Mississinewa Lake, including Miami State Recreation Area, are booked through the Indiana DNR system. Reservations for Mississinewa Lake Campground can be made through the Indiana State Parks reservation system online or by phone, hosted on the ReserveAmerica platform. The maximum booking window is six months prior to arrival, and many sites remain available from November through April on a first-come, first-served basis.
State-park rules are strict on age and length of stay. Minimum age to rent a campsite is 18, a single site can be reserved for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights, and campers must vacate for 48 hours before returning with a new reservation.
Private campgrounds such as Spring Hill Campground, Woodys Camp and Bait, Tall Sycamore Campgrounds, and Misthaven Camp Resort take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Book summer weekends several weeks ahead, especially for pull-through and full-hookup sites that fit larger RVs.
What to expect
Terrain around Kokomo is flat to gently rolling, with mixed farmland and hardwood forest. Roads leading to the Upper Wabash reservoirs are paved, and most private campgrounds sit off county highways with straightforward RV access. Campsites come equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and gravel parking pads, and some sites have full hookups, while most have electric connections.
Expect summer humidity, mosquitoes near the water, and thunderstorms that can move through quickly. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Kokomo and along US-31 but can weaken in the wooded sections of the reservoir SRAs.
Check park alerts before arrival. High water on the Wabash system can close the beach, boat ramps, and mooring areas on short notice, so confirm status with the campground or the DNR reservation page the day before travel.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kokomo%2C%20IndianaDo I need a special license to drive an RV rental in Kokomo?
A regular driver's license is all you need for nearly every RV rental in Kokomo, Indiana. The Indiana BMV only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for vehicles or combinations over 26,001 pounds, and virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy falls well under that threshold. RVezy's approved driver requirements ask renters to be at least 25 years old with a valid driver's license, and your ID is verified right in the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit. First time renting an RV? Your host walks you through every system at pickup, so you are never figuring it out alone.

Toggle the Pet Friendly filter on RVezy to see eligible rigs, then message the host with your dog's breed and size before booking to confirm any details. Most campgrounds near Kokomo welcome leashed dogs too, including Mississinewa Lake's Miami State Recreation Area and White River Campground in Cicero, both with shaded sites for walks. Highland Park in Kokomo, home of the famous Old Ben steer statue, has plenty of green space for a pre-departure stretch. Pro tip: pack a long tie-out leash, a collapsible water bowl, and your dog's vaccination records, since some campgrounds ask to see them.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/mississinewa-lake/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Kokomo?
Yes, RV delivery in Kokomo is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a stress-free first trip. Many RVezy hosts in the Kokomo area will drive the rig to your campsite at Mississinewa Lake, France Park in Logansport, or even your own driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is ideal if you are new to RVing or want to skip the highway drive entirely. Delivery fees vary by distance, so use the Delivery filter on RVezy and confirm pricing with the host before you book. Pro tip: pair delivery with a long weekend at Salamonie Lake (about an hour northeast of Kokomo) for a low-effort family RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kokomo%2C%20IndianaHow far can I travel from Kokomo on an RV road trip?
Your RV road trip from Kokomo can reach most of the Midwest, and many RVezy hosts offer generous or even unlimited mileage packages. Popular routes include Indianapolis (about 60 miles south, roughly 1 hour), Indiana Dunes National Park on Lake Michigan (about 150 miles north, 2.5 hours), Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky (about 280 miles, 4.5 hours), and the Great Smoky Mountains (about 425 miles, 7 hours). Each host sets a daily mileage allowance and per-mile overage rate, so check the listing or message the host for a custom quote on longer trips. Pro tip: use search filters to find RV rental unlimited mileage listings, which is a smart move for any trip over 300 miles.
nps.gov/indu/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Kokomo, IN?
Kokomo is surrounded by excellent campgrounds for RV camping. Top picks include Mississinewa Lake's Miami State Recreation Area in Peru (about 25 miles north, with electric sites, a swim beach, and hundreds of campsites), Salamonie Lake near Andrews (great fishing and shaded sites), France Park in Logansport (a former limestone quarry with crystal-clear swimming), White River Campground in Cicero (county-run, full hookups, riverfront), and Mounds State Park in Anderson (ancient earthworks and modern electric sites). For state-managed parks, book through the Indiana DNR reservation system up to six months in advance. Pro tip: holiday weekends like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July fill fast, so reserve the moment your dates open.
camp.in.gov/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Kokomo?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for any Kokomo RV trip, with daytime highs from the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit and warm evenings perfect for campfires. July is peak season (averages near the mid 80s) and best for swimming at France Park or Mississinewa Lake. September and early October bring excellent fall color across central Indiana's hardwood forests, cooler nights in the 50s, and far fewer mosquitoes. Spring (April to mid-May) works well too, though April is one of the wetter months, so pack extra towels. Winters often drop into the 20s with regular snow, so most campgrounds switch to limited services from November through March. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September for prime leaf-peeping with summer-like daytime temps.
weather.gov/ind/I have never rented an RV before. How does this work in Kokomo?
First time renting an RV in Kokomo? You will be fine. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, awning, and dump procedures step by step. Many Kokomo-area hosts also offer delivery, meaning the RV arrives at your campsite already set up and ready to enjoy. You can message any host directly from their listing before booking to ask about driving the rig, parking it, or which RV is best for beginners (Class C motorhomes and travel trailers are usually the easiest). Pro tip: start with a two- or three-night trip somewhere close, like Mississinewa Lake. You will learn the basics fast and feel like a pro by night two.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kokomo%2C%20IndianaWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Kokomo booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US-31, a dead battery at France Park, or a lockout in a parking lot is a quick phone call away from being solved. RVezy's customer support team is available throughout your trip, and your host is usually just a text away for quick questions about how something in the rig works. Indiana has a dense network of RV service centers (Kokomo, Lafayette, and Indianapolis all have major ones), so parts and repairs are rarely far. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup so it is one tap away if you need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Kokomo RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on nearly every RV rental Indiana hosts list, and a road trip from Kokomo to Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, or Illinois is a classic Midwest adventure. Some hosts also allow trips into Canada with prior approval, so message the host directly from the listing if you want to cross the border. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular cross-border ideas from Kokomo include Holland, Michigan (about 4 hours), Cincinnati, Ohio (about 3 hours), and Mammoth Cave, Kentucky (about 4.5 hours). Pro tip: confirm any out-of-state plans with your host before booking so mileage and time allowances line up with your itinerary.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a motorhome rental in Kokomo?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for on a motorhome rental in Kokomo. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans deliver 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg). Gas prices in Howard County tend to track close to the Midwest average, and Indiana's flat terrain on I-69 and US-31 is very fuel-friendly compared to mountain driving. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop from Kokomo to Mississinewa Lake and back, budget roughly $90 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: check current Midwest fuel averages at the EIA before you go, and fill up at larger truck stops along I-69 in Anderson or Pendleton for the best regional pricing.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Kokomo?
For peak summer weekends at Indiana state parks and reservoirs, book your campsite up to six months ahead through the Indiana DNR reservation system at camp.IN.gov. Mississinewa Lake, Salamonie Lake, and Mounds State Park all fill quickly for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. For midweek trips or shoulder season (April, May, September, October), you can often find great sites a week or two out. Private parks like White River Campground in Cicero and France Park in Logansport take direct bookings on their websites. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly six months before your target Saturday, that is when prime lakeside electric sites get snapped up.
camp.in.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Kokomo?
Driving an RV in and around Kokomo is easygoing. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, main routes like US-31, US-35, SR-26, and I-69 just east of town are wide and well-maintained, and traffic is light compared to Indianapolis. A few things to watch for: spring brings frequent thunderstorms and occasional high winds across open farmland, summer can mean afternoon downpours, and winter (December through February) often delivers snow, ice, and freezing rain. Avoid older downtown bridges with posted height limits, and use US-31 as your main north-south artery. Pro tip: check INDOT's TrafficWise site before you head out for real-time conditions, road work, and weather alerts.
in.gov/indot/trafficwise/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Kokomo?
Campgrounds around Kokomo are well-equipped and welcoming. Most Indiana DNR sites at Mississinewa Lake, Salamonie Lake, and Mounds State Park offer electric hookups (50 and 30 amp), modern restrooms with hot showers, dump stations, potable water fill-ups, and camp stores selling firewood and ice. Private parks like White River Campground in Cicero and France Park in Logansport add full hookups (water, sewer, electric) and often Wi-Fi. Dump stations are typically free for paying guests. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank at your campground before checkout and use the dump station between 7 and 9am to skip the Sunday morning lineup that builds at Mississinewa Lake.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/mississinewa-lake/What features and amenities come with a typical Kokomo RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Kokomo come fully equipped for a comfortable family trip. Expect a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinette for kids, a full kitchen with fridge, microwave, stove and sink, a wet or dry bath with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and roof vents. Class C motorhomes seat 6 to 8 with seatbelts, while travel trailers and fifth wheels often sleep more. Many hosts include awnings, camping chairs, leveling blocks, outdoor speakers, and Wi-Fi hotspots as standard or low-cost add-ons. Check each listing's amenities list carefully or message the host to confirm. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and required features (like solar or a built-in TV) right from the search page to save scrolling time.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kokomo%2C%20IndianaWhat add-ons and options should I know about for my Kokomo rental?
RVezy hosts in Kokomo offer plenty of add-ons to customize your trip, including delivery and setup, generators, bike racks, kayaks, kitchen kits, linen and bedding packages, propane fills, and outdoor furniture. Each host sets their own pricing and mileage policy, so check the listing carefully: some include 100 free miles per day with overage typically around $0.30 to $0.50 per additional mile, while others offer RV rental unlimited mileage upgrades for longer trips. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Kokomo, Greentown, or Russiaville. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a kitchen kit on your first booking. For roughly the cost of a hotel night, you skip the highway stress and the trip to the store for pots and pans.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kokomo%2C%20IndianaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online. When you book a campervan rental in Kokomo or any other RV through RVezy, your payment is processed securely through the platform (never cash to the host). Most bookings also include a refundable security deposit, which is separate from your booking payment and is released after a smooth return. The deposit amount is set per listing and is clearly displayed before you confirm. To avoid any deposit issues, do a video walkaround with your host at pickup and dropoff, return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it. Pro tip: keep receipts for fuel and propane fill-ups, they make any post-trip questions a quick conversation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV rental possible in Kokomo, and what about cold-weather prep?
Winter RV rental in Kokomo is possible but takes planning, since Kokomo winters routinely drop into the teens and 20s with regular snowfall. A handful of RVezy hosts list four-season rigs equipped with heated tanks, enclosed underbellies, and high-output furnaces, all essential when temperatures dip well below freezing. Look for a campground with year-round shore power (Brown County State Park is one of the closest options at about 2.5 hours south and stays open through winter). Use heated water hoses, add RV antifreeze to your gray and black tanks, and skirt the rig if you are parked more than a couple of nights. Pro tip: late March into April is an underrated time to RV near Kokomo, you get shoulder-season pricing with much milder weather.
