Campgrounds near La Fontaine, Indiana
La Fontaine sits in Wabash County in north-central Indiana, within easy driving distance of two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood-control reservoirs that anchor the local RV camping scene: Salamonie Lake to the northeast and Mississinewa Lake to the west. Both lake properties are managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and together offer several hundred developed and primitive sites.
On Salamonie Lake, the Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area is the main hub. Three distinct camping areas serve different travelers: the Modern - Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area loop for RVs needing electric hookups, the Apple Orchard Primitive - Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area area for tent and self-contained rigs, and the Horsemens Camp - Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area for riders bringing stock.
To the west, Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake fronts a roughly 3,210-acre reservoir and offers a large campground of over 400 sites with electric and some full-hookup sites, family cabins, and a swim beach. Closer to town, White Oaks Mobile Home Park provides a small private option for longer stays or transient RV parking outside the state system.
Things to do near La Fontaine
Water recreation drives most trips. Salamonie Lake covers roughly 2,665 acres and supports fishing, boating, and swimming, with a marina, boat ramp, fish-cleaning station, and public beach near the Modern - Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area. Mississinewa Lake, larger at about 3,210 acres, is known for bass, walleye, and crappie fishing and has its own beach, multiple boat launches, and mooring for camper boats.
On land, both reservoirs offer multi-use trails. Salamonie's 13-mile Bloodroot Trail and the horse trails accessed from Horsemens Camp - Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area draw hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. At Mississinewa, the Blue Heron, Moswa, and Shepoconnah trails connect to the Miami SRA campground. The Upper Wabash Interpretive Services Center at Salamonie runs seasonal programs, and the areas around La Fontaine are also known for bird watching, wildlife viewing, and hunting in season.

December - February
34° / 21°F 65 mmCold and snowy; limited services; lake drawdown in effect
The regular camping season at the state-managed lakes runs roughly mid-May through late October, with all facilities typically open by the third weekend in May and beaches operating from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Summer is peak season: sites at Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake and the Modern - Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area loop book up fastest for holiday weekends and special events such as Fourth of July fireworks.
Shoulder seasons are quieter. Spring brings wildflowers and active fishing, but also thunderstorm risk across the upper Wabash Valley. Fall delivers strong leaf color and cooler nights, though comfort stations 2, 3, 4, and 5 at Miami SRA may close about 15 days before the end of the regular season.
Both properties list status as open year round, though services are limited off-season. Mississinewa's winter drawdown begins in early October and is complete by December 1, and all boat ramps are closed through winter except Red Bridge. Blue-green algae advisories are posted for both lakes year round, so campers should not drink lake water and should shower after swimming.
How to book a site
State-managed campgrounds around La Fontaine use the Indiana DNR reservation system, powered by ReserveAmerica. Reservations for standard electric and non-electric sites can be made up to six months before the arrival date and close at 2 p.m. Eastern on the day of arrival. Rent-a-camp cabins and shelters open up to a year in advance, with a minimum of two days before arrival. Some sites are held for first-come, first-served walk-ins.
A single reservation is capped at 14 consecutive nights, after which the camper must vacate for 48 hours before booking again. Two vehicles are allowed per site, with overflow parking near the gatehouse, and the minimum age to hold a reservation is 18. Mississinewa also runs a separate seasonal-campsite lottery for campers who want to keep one site from May through October at Miami SRA. Private options such as White Oaks Mobile Home Park are booked directly with the property.
What to expect on arrival
Both state properties charge a daily gate fee per vehicle, collected on arrival, with a higher rate for out-of-state plates; the receipt serves as an in-and-out pass for the length of the stay. Roads into Lost Bridge West and Miami SRA are paved and can handle large rigs, and the modern Salamonie electric loop can accommodate RVs up to 65 feet, with 30-amp service standard and scattered 50-amp sites.
Expect a mix of shady and open sites. At Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake, most sites are gravel pads with picnic tables and fire rings on grass, in sunny, open sections with limited privacy between neighbors. Comfort stations, showers, dump stations, and camp stores are present at both reservoirs. Public Wi-Fi is available but can be intermittent. Note the ongoing closure of the Old Frances Slocum Trail between Miami SRA and Red Bridge SRA when planning drive routes on the north side of Mississinewa Lake.
