Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake Station, IN

Lake Station sits in Lake County in northwest Indiana, minutes from Interstate 80/94 and roughly a 45-minute drive from downtown Chicago. The town is a practical base for RV travelers heading to the Lake Michigan shoreline, with Indiana Dunes National Park hugging 15 miles of the southern shore of Lake Michigan just to the north and east. Campground options nearby range from full-hookup private resorts to rustic national and state park sites. Lakeshore Camp Resort is a 940-site membership park in Portage with 115 full hookup campsites and 12 cabins available for rent to the general public. Sand Creek Campground in Chesterton, Dunewood inside Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana Dunes State Park, and Cedar Lake Bible Retreat and RV Park to the south round out the closest options. Most travelers here split their time between the beach, dune trails, and short drives into Chicago or Michigan City, which makes site selection a trade-off between hookups, quiet, and proximity to the water.

Public campgrounds use two separate systems. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance for Dunewood Campground, which is open April through October and booked through Recreation.gov. Indiana Dunes State Park reservations are handled through the Indiana DNR's ReserveAmerica portal, with a rolling six-month booking window. Private parks handle their own reservations. Camping in the Hobart and Portage area tends to be seasonal, with most private campgrounds operating from April through October, and Sand Creek Campground specifically running from April 15 to October 15. Lakeshore Camp Resort takes bookings directly and lists a limited number of full-hookup sites and cabins for the general public. For peak summer weekends, book as early as possible; for shoulder-season trips, a few weeks of lead time is usually enough.
