Campgrounds and RV parks near Liberty, IN

Water recreation drives most trips here. Brookville Lake covers roughly 5,260 acres and is known for recreational and sport fishing, boating, and open-water paddling. Whitewater Lake, about 200 acres, is quieter and restricted to electric trolling motors, better suited to kayaks, canoes, and shoreline fishing. Swimming beaches remain open at Mounds SRA and Whitewater Memorial State Park from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. On land, Whitewater Memorial State Park has nine miles of bridle trails accessed from the horsemen's campground and day-use area, plus shoreline hiking loops and the Hornbeam Nature Preserve. Quakertown SRA operates a 3D archery range with 23 targets from April through August. Hueston Woods, a short drive east into Ohio, adds a 200-acre old-growth beech-maple forest designated a National Natural Landmark, disc golf, and fossil hunting on Acton Lake.

The main camping season around Liberty runs from spring into late fall. Late spring and early summer are the busiest window: swimming beaches open at Memorial Day, the Quakertown archery range opens in April, and Whitewater Memorial's saddle barn and shoreline activities are in full operation. June is typically the wettest month, so campers should expect scattered thunderstorms and pack for mud. Summer weekends at Brookville Lake and Hueston Woods fill quickly, especially holiday weekends. Booking several weeks or months ahead is standard for lakeside electric sites. Weekdays are noticeably quieter and easier to reserve on shorter notice. Fall brings cooler temperatures, hardwood color through the Whitewater River valley, and reduced crowds, though beach swimming ends at Labor Day. Winter camping is possible at year-round properties such as Hueston Woods, where water stations remain available, but campers should expect freezing overnight lows, snow, and limited services. An ongoing INDOT bridge closure on Dunlapsville Road adjacent to Quakertown SRA requires a detour via SR 101, SR 44, and SR 1.

Sites at Quakertown State Recreation Area are paved with electric hookups offering 20, 30, and 50 amp service; the property has modern comfort stations with flush toilets and showers, a dump station, and a camp store within the Brookville Lake complex. The swimming beach at Quakertown is permanently closed, so swimmers should use Whitewater Memorial or Mounds SRA. Whitewater Memorial offers 236 electric campsites, 45 non-electric sites, family cabins, and a separate 37-site primitive horsemen's camp with trail access and pit toilets. Hueston Woods across the border has more than 200 electric sites, including about 20 full-hookup sites, plus non-electric and equestrian loops, with laundry and centrally located bathhouses. Expect wooded, rolling terrain, decent shade at most loops, and mixed cell coverage. RVers should confirm site length in advance, as Quakertown accommodates rigs up to about 60 feet while some Hueston Woods loops have shorter pads.
