Campgrounds near Markle, Indiana
Markle sits in northeast Indiana at the corner of Huntington, Wells, and Allen counties, roughly halfway between Fort Wayne and the Salamonie and J. Edward Roush reservoirs. RV renters use the town as a base for a cluster of state-managed camping options within a 30-minute drive, plus a full-service private park to the southeast.
Southwest of Markle, Salamonie Lake is a large flood-control reservoir managed by the Indiana DNR, and Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area offers a modern campground with electric sites (20, 30, and 50 amp service) and some full-hookup sites, alongside the equestrian-only Horsemens Camp - Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area. Kil-So-Quah State Recreation Area at J. Edward Roush Lake historically offered electric and non-electric sites, though the DNR has announced an indefinite closure of the campground; visitors should confirm status with the property office before travel.
To the southeast, Ouabache State Park sits along the Wabash River near Bluffton, and the Bluffton / Fort Wayne South KOA Journey provides full-hookup RV sites. Camp Timber Lake rounds out the nearby private options.
Things to do near Markle
Water recreation drives most trips. J. Edward Roush Lake and Salamonie Lake both support fishing and boating, and Lost Bridge West provides access to a public swimming beach, a marina (Pirate's Cove), and hiking trails at Salamonie Lake.
Ouabache State Park is the marquee stop for families. A paved bike trail starts near the campground and connects to a pathway along the Wabash River, extending into nearby Bluffton, and additional attractions include the live bison exhibit and a fire tower for observation. Kunkel Lake offers fishing, and during the summer months a naturalist provides information about the natural wonders of the park.
Equestrian riders can trailer horses to the Horsemens Camp - Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area, and the Bluffton / Fort Wayne South KOA Journey adds resort-style amenities for kids and families.

December - February
36° / 21°F 60 mmFreezing; state sites drop to primitive service.
The prime RV window runs late spring through early fall. The average last freeze in the spring is late April and the first freeze in the autumn is in mid-October, which brackets the reliable shoulder seasons for hookup camping. Fort Wayne averages 39 thunderstorm days per year with most occurring from May to August, and mid-winter through early spring is the wettest time of year, with autumn the driest.
Summer weekends and holidays fill state park sites quickly, particularly at Ouabache State Park and the modern loops at Lost Bridge West. Fall brings drier weather and hardwood color across the Wabash and Salamonie valleys, and midweek sites open up considerably.
Winter camping is limited. The Bluffton / Fort Wayne South KOA Journey is open all year. Ouabache State Park is open year round, and Salamonie Lake stays open with shifting service levels. Salamonie is a flood-control reservoir, and facilities including the beach, horse trails, and some campsites may be temporarily closed following periods of heavy rain, so campers should watch for flood alerts.

This was not just another camper rental. This was a true Air BnB experience. The trailer was immaculate and didn't miss a beat all weekend. The back patio area was amazing and trailer was spotless. Melissa and her husband crossed the t's and dotted all the i's on this rental from top to bottom: from communication, to drop off and pick up, everything was as smooth as could be. A great experience that we will definitely rent again one day!

How to book a campsite near Markle
Indiana state park and lake sites are booked through the DNR central reservation system at camp.IN.gov or by phone at 1-866-622-6746. For Ouabache State Park, reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance, and reservations are recommended, especially during peak season and weekends, as the campground has a limited number of sites. Lost Bridge West at Salamonie Lake uses the same DNR system, including the Horsemens Camp loop.
Kil-So-Quah State Recreation Area has been announced for indefinite closure by the Indiana DNR; campers should contact the J.E. Roush Lake FWA property office before planning a trip.
The Bluffton / Fort Wayne South KOA Journey books through the KOA website or by phone directly with the campground. Cancellation policies are set by the campground; confirm the current policy at booking.
What to expect at Markle-area campgrounds
Sites vary widely in service level. The modern campground at Lost Bridge West offers 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service, with some full-hookup sites, plus modern comfort stations with hot showers and a dump station. Ouabache State Park has 132 campsites, with electric hookups at most sites but no water or sewer at the pad, so RV renters should arrive with a full fresh tank.
Kil-So-Quah is the most rustic of the public options, with a mix of electric and primitive sites, pit toilets, and a boat launch. A DNR advisory notes that blue-green algae is found in area lakes year round, so campers should not drink lake water and should shower after swimming.
Gate fees apply at state park and lake properties. For cars, trucks, and campers, the entrance fee is per vehicle and is higher for out-of-state plates, seven days a week including holidays.
