Things to do around Montpelier
Ouabache State Park is the main draw for day trips. The park features a bison exhibit where a small herd can be viewed in a designated enclosure, and a paved bike trail starts near the campground and connects to a pathway along the Wabash River that extends into Bluffton. A fire tower on the property offers climbing opportunities and long views, and Kunkel Lake supports fishing for bass and bluegill with a valid Indiana fishing license.
On-site recreation at the private parks is family focused. Wildwood Outdoor Escape has a swimming pool, mini golf and two fishing spots on property, and Sports Lake Campground centers on a well-stocked 11-acre lake with an in-ground swimming pool, mini golf and a recreation hall. Muncie, Marion and Fort Wayne are all within about an hour for restaurants, groceries, museums and larger shopping stops.

East-central Indiana has a four-season humid continental climate. Muncie, the nearest reporting station, records hot, humid summers and cold winters with no dry season, and summer is the busiest camping window. Expect warm, muggy days and periodic thunderstorms from June through August, and book weekend sites well ahead at private parks and Ouabache State Park.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with lower demand and cooler nights. May is the wettest month in Muncie, with rain falling on roughly 19 days and accumulating around 86 millimetres of precipitation, so early-season trips should plan for wet ground and muddy sites. Fall brings clearer days, changing hardwoods and comfortable temperatures for hiking and biking.
Winter camping options are limited. Wildwood Outdoor Escape and Sports Lake Campground both operate roughly mid-April through mid-October, while Ouabache State Park keeps primitive sites available year round even when other amenities close down.
Booking campsites near Montpelier
Booking systems differ by campground type. Reservations for Ouabache State Park are made through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources reservation system online or by phone. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance, and locking in a site early is recommended for peak-season weekends because the campground has a limited number of sites.
Private parks each run their own booking. The Bluffton / Fort Wayne South KOA Journey reserves through the KOA website, and short-term RV and tent sites require cancellation notice by 4 p.m. seven days before arrival. Wildwood Outdoor Escape books through Campspot for short stays, and Sports Lake Campground and Marbrook Campground accept reservations directly by phone. Summer holiday weekends fill first.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Montpelier is flat to gently rolling farmland, which makes for easy RV navigation and level sites at most parks. Private campgrounds in the area typically offer full or partial hookups: Wildwood Outdoor Escape has 20, 30 and 50 amp electric, water and sewer hookups and accepts rigs up to 75 feet, and Sports Lake Campground has 30 and 50 amp electric, water and sewer hookups with a 70-foot maximum length.
State-park sites are more rustic. Ouabache has electric and non-electric sites but no sewer at the campsite, so plan tank capacity accordingly, and a dump station is available on site. The park has firewood regulations to prevent the spread of invasive insects, so purchase firewood locally or at the park camp store. Alcohol is prohibited in all Indiana State Parks, and a gate permit is required for entry.
