Camping near Nappanee, Indiana
Nappanee sits in Elkhart County in north-central Indiana, in the heart of the state's Amish Country and about 30 miles southeast of South Bend. The surrounding landscape is farmland dotted with small kettle lakes, making it a practical base for RV travelers exploring Elkhart, Goshen, Shipshewana, and the wider RV manufacturing corridor. Nappanee is also within a short drive of the Newmar factory, drawing owners who visit for service or warranty work.
Campground options near Nappanee are predominantly private, family-run parks rather than federal or state facilities. Pla-mor Campgrounds, Hoffman Lake Campground, Hoffman Lake Campground, INC., Patona Bay Resort, and Rupert's Resort Campground all serve the area with a mix of full-hookup RV sites, seasonal residents, and weekend transients.
For travelers who want a public-land experience, Chain O'Lakes State Park lies to the east near Albion, and Potato Creek State Park sits to the northwest. Both are booked through Indiana DNR's reservation system and expand the trip-planning menu beyond the private parks closest to town.
Things to do around Nappanee
The area's biggest draw is Amish Country. Shipshewana's flea market, Middlebury's back roads, and Nappanee's own heritage sites are all within easy driving distance, and the Elkhart County Heritage Trail links many of the small towns and food stops by car or bike.
Water and outdoor recreation is built around the small lakes north and east of town. Hoffman Lake Campground sits on a lake with a private beach, boat ramp, pool, splash pad, and mini-golf. Pla-mor Campgrounds adds mini-golf, batting cages, a driving range, and fishing ponds for kids.
For day trips, Chain O'Lakes State Park offers roughly 23 miles of trails and a chain of quiet kettle lakes that suit paddling. Elkhart's RV/MH Hall of Fame and Notre Dame in South Bend round out rainy-day options.

How to book
Private campgrounds near Nappanee handle their own reservations. Hoffman Lake Campground books through Campspot and its own site. Pla-mor Campgrounds takes reservations by phone and through its website. Patona Bay Resort and Rupert's Resort Campground follow similar direct-booking patterns, so contact the operator directly for holiday minimums and deposit policies.
For the state parks, Chain O'Lakes and Potato Creek use Indiana DNR's camp.IN.gov system. Reservations open up to six months in advance, and popular electric loops fill quickly for summer weekends. Weekends carry a two-night minimum and holiday weekends a three-night minimum.
Many parks near Nappanee carry a heavy seasonal population, so transient inventory can be tight. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead for summer weekends is a reasonable rule of thumb.
What to expect on the ground
Expect rural, farm-country surroundings. Most private parks near Nappanee sit off two-lane county roads with easy big-rig access from US 6 and US 20. Sites are commonly a mix of concrete or gravel pads and grass, with 30- and 50-amp service, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi at most full-hookup sites. Cell coverage is generally solid across the major carriers.
A large share of sites at private parks are held by seasonal campers, so transient loops can feel tucked in. Grass sites can get soft after heavy rain, and some parks sit near active rail lines with intermittent train noise.
An Indiana fishing license is required for most anglers on public waters. A daily gate fee applies at Indiana state park properties, with a lower rate for in-state vehicles.

Northern Indiana is packed with leash-friendly spots: Potato Creek State Park in North Liberty has miles of dog-welcome trails around Worster Lake, Chain O' Lakes State Park in Albion allows leashed pets on most trails and at designated campsites, and the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail between Goshen and Shipshewana is a paved favorite for RVers with dogs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm the pet fee and any size or breed notes so check-in is smooth.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/potato-creek-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Nappanee?
Yes, RV delivery in Nappanee is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to popular sites like Elkhart Campground or Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds, level it on the pad, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. You just show up with your groceries and start the vacation. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and the per-mile rate. Pro tip: delivery is gold during Notre Dame football weekends in South Bend, when driving a large motorhome through tailgate traffic is the last thing you want to do.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nappanee,IndianaHow far can I drive my Nappanee RV rental, and how does mileage work?
You have real range from Nappanee, and mileage policies are easy to compare on RVezy. Elkhart Campground in Elkhart has 30/50-amp service and is close to the RV/MH Hall of Fame. Twin Mills Camping Resort in Howe is a family favorite with a pool and fishing lake. Pla-Mor Campground in Plymouth offers shaded sites and a swimming pool seasonally. For state park camping, Potato Creek State Park in North Liberty surrounds Worster Lake with hundreds of electric sites, and Chain O' Lakes State Park in Albion has connected lakes great for kayaking. Pro tip: book Indiana state park sites at camp.IN.gov as early as six months out for summer weekends.
camp.in.gov/When is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Nappanee?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for any Nappanee RV trip. Summers run warm and humid, with July highs typically in the mid-80s F, while spring and fall sit in a comfortable 55 to 75 F range and bring fewer bugs and lower campground prices. September and early October are the local insider pick: harvest season at the Amish farms, the Elkhart County 4-H Fair wraps up in late July, and fall foliage along the Heritage Trail peaks in mid-October. Winters get cold (often 20 to 35 F with snow), so RV camping in Nappanee is mostly a three-season activity unless you book a four-season rig. Pro tip: time your trip with the Quilt Gardens on Tour, running from June through September.
weather.gov/iwx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Nappanee?
You'll be more than okay, and Nappanee is actually one of the friendliest places in the country to learn. Roads through Elkhart County are flat, well-signed, and built for the RVs manufactured right here (Nappanee is in the self-proclaimed RV Capital of the World). Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures, so you are never left guessing. First time renting an RV? Pick a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 28 feet for easier handling, and watch for horse-and-buggy traffic on county roads through Amish Country. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in an empty lot before heading out, your mirrors will quickly become your best friend.
in.gov/indot/safety/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in Nappanee booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, lockouts, jump starts, and towing if needed. One quick call and help is dispatched, whether you are parked at Chain O' Lakes State Park or rolling down I-80/90. Your host is also your best first resource for quirks specific to their rig, and most respond within minutes through the RVezy messaging app. Pro tip: take a photo of the dashboard, propane gauge, and tire pressure stickers during your walkthrough so you can quickly share details if you ever need support. That small step makes troubleshooting on any Nappanee RV trip dramatically faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Nappanee RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and Nappanee is perfectly positioned for it. Popular RV road trips from Nappanee include Chicago (about 2.5 hours west), Mackinaw City, Michigan (about 4.5 hours north), the Wisconsin Dells (about 5 hours northwest), and Niagara Falls (about 7 hours east). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan you select, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: bring your passport for Canada trips and budget extra time at the border crossings near Detroit or Port Huron, Michigan, which are the closest from Nappanee.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat is a realistic fuel mileage and gas budget for an RV trip from Nappanee?
Budgeting fuel is easier than most renters expect. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes return 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A coaches run 6 to 10 mpg. With Indiana gas averaging roughly $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon recently, a weekend loop from Nappanee to Indiana Dunes (about 230 miles round trip) in a Class C will cost roughly $70 to $90 in fuel. Pro tip: Pilot and Love's truck stops along I-80/90 and US-31 are RV-friendly with high-clearance pumps and dump stations. Fill up before crossing onto the Indiana Toll Road, where station prices typically run higher than the local Speedway or Murphy USA in Nappanee or Goshen.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Nappanee?
For Indiana state parks like Potato Creek and Chain O' Lakes, book up to six months ahead on the official reservation site at camp.IN.gov, especially for summer weekends and holidays which fill quickly when reservations open. Private parks like Elkhart Campground and Twin Mills Camping Resort typically need 2 to 4 weeks of lead time outside of major events. During the Elkhart County 4-H Fair in late July or RV rallies hosted in Goshen, plan on booking 3 to 6 months out. Pro tip: if you are rolling in last-minute, look at private parks just south of Nappanee in Warsaw or Bremen where availability tends to open up faster. Many also accept same-day phone reservations.
camp.in.gov/What should I know about driving an RV around Nappanee and Amish Country?
Driving around Nappanee is genuinely easy, but there's one local quirk: you'll share rural roads with Amish horse-and-buggy traffic, especially on county roads between Nappanee, Wakarusa, and Shipshewana. Slow down on hills and blind curves, pass only with plenty of clearance, and never honk at buggies. Indiana caps RV height at 13'6" and width at 102 inches, which clears every standard rental. US-6 runs straight through Nappanee and is wide and RV-friendly, while I-80/90 (the Indiana Toll Road) is the fastest east-west route. Pro tip: avoid downtown Goshen on Saturday mornings when farmers market traffic is heaviest, and watch for sudden weather changes, lake-effect snow can roll in fast off Lake Michigan from November through March.
in.gov/indot/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Nappanee?
You will find more than you expect. Most full-service campgrounds near Nappanee offer 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, plus on-site dump stations and potable water fills. Elkhart Campground and Twin Mills Camping Resort have laundry, showers, swimming pools, and Wi-Fi. State parks like Potato Creek and Chain O' Lakes offer electric sites with central dump stations and shower houses, though no sewer at individual pads. For dump stations on the road, many Pilot and Flying J locations along I-80/90 are reliable options. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before you leave the campground. Bring a 25-foot drinking-safe hose to reach further spigots.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/What is inside a typical RV rental in Nappanee?
Plenty to make you comfortable. Since Nappanee is at the heart of Indiana's RV manufacturing industry, the rentals here are often newer and well-equipped. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, stove, and sink; a bathroom with toilet and shower; queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and sofa sleepers; air conditioning and furnace; and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most rigs include a TV, and many hosts offer a Wi-Fi hotspot or generator as an add-on. Sleeps counts on RVezy range from 2 in a campervan up to 8 or 10 in a bunkhouse travel trailer, perfect for a family RV trip Nappanee-style. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and RV type to quickly narrow to the right rig for your crew.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nappanee,IndianaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Nappanee?
You've got lots of flexibility. Common add-ons in Nappanee include kitchen kits, bedding and linens, generator use, propane refills, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, and Wi-Fi hotspots, with most extras priced between $10 and $50 each. Pickup typically happens at the host's home or shop in Nappanee, Wakarusa, Bremen, or Goshen, with a walkthrough that runs 30 to 60 minutes. Drop-off works the same way, and many hosts offer late-evening returns by arrangement. Mileage allowances are usually 100 to 150 free miles per day, with some offering unlimited. Pro tip: ask about a dump-station add-on, several Nappanee hosts will handle the wastewater tanks for you on return for a small flat fee, which is a huge convenience for first-timers.
visitindiana.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online. When you book your campervan rental in Nappanee or motorhome rental in Nappanee, RVezy charges the trip cost through the platform, with a portion typically due at booking and the balance before pickup. A refundable security deposit is held separately before the trip starts (amounts vary by RV) and is released after the rig is returned in the same condition. Avoid surprise charges by taking date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at both pickup and drop-off. Pro tip: review the listing's mileage, generator, and cleaning policies before booking so you know exactly what counts as an overage. A quick message to the host before your trip confirms everything.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best RV road trip destinations from Nappanee?
Nappanee sits at a sweet spot for an RV road trip from Nappanee in just about any direction. Head about 35 minutes north to Shipshewana for the famous flea market and Menno-Hof. Drive about 1 hour 45 minutes northwest to Indiana Dunes National Park for Lake Michigan beaches and dune hikes. Go about 2.5 hours west to Chicago for big-city skylines (park your rig at Indiana Dunes and train in). Cruise about 4 hours east to the Lake Erie shoreline near Sandusky, Ohio, and Cedar Point. Or head about 2.5 hours south to Indianapolis for the Motor Speedway. Local insider tip: take Indiana State Road 5 north out of Nappanee for a scenic, low-traffic route through Amish farmland, passing quilt gardens, roadside bakeries, and buggy crossings.
