Campgrounds near New Harmony, Indiana
New Harmony sits in Posey County in the southwest corner of Indiana, along the Wabash River across from Illinois. The town's utopian history draws day-trippers, but for RV travellers the main draw is Harmonie State Park, located approximately 25 miles northwest of Evansville and 4 miles south of New Harmony, in Posey County. It anchors a small cluster of campgrounds that spans the Indiana-Illinois state line.
Harmonie State Park Campground is the closest full-service option, with a 200-site family campground with electrical hookups and modern restrooms, as well as a youth-group area in a more primitive setting. Just across the Wabash in Illinois, the Grayville / I-64 KOA Holiday offers an interstate-adjacent option for travellers passing through on Interstate 64, while Beall Woods State Park provides a quieter, wooded alternative north of Mount Carmel.
Smaller and more local options round out the area, including the Vanderburgh 4-H Center near Evansville and Weather Rock Camp Ground. Together these give RV renters a mix of state-park amenities, interstate convenience, and rural quiet within roughly a half-hour of downtown New Harmony.
Things to do near New Harmony
Harmonie State Park is built for outdoor days. Trails for walking, biking, mountain biking, and nature hikes wind through ravines and floodplain forest, and the park has a boat launch ramp on the Wabash River, fishing, and a seasonal nature center with interpretive naturalist programs. Families with kids should note that the campground has three playgrounds, an amphitheater for movies and entertainment, and a nature center that operates Thursday-Sunday during summer months.
In town, historic New Harmony preserves two early-1800s utopian settlements and is walkable in an afternoon, with museums, gardens, and the Roofless Church. Beall Woods State Park, across the river in Illinois, protects one of the largest remaining old-growth hardwood stands in the Midwest and is worth a half-day trip for hikers and birders.

86° / 68°F 98 mmHot and humid; peak bookings, reserve early

September - November
68° / 49°F 94 mmCool nights and hardwood colour through October

41° / 28°F 82 mmCold and damp; limited services at state parks
Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. Harmonie's nature center and interpretive programs run on a summer schedule, and note that the park's pool was closed at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and never re-opened, and in March 2023 the pool facilities were dismantled. May is the wettest month, with about 5.01 inches of precipitation, so shoulder-season travellers should plan for storms and check river levels before booking riverside sites.
Summer is hot and humid, with July daytime averages near 89F and overnight lows staying in the upper 60s. Sites fill quickly on holiday weekends and around special events. Popular weekends, especially the Halloween event weekend, fill quickly and should be booked as soon as reservations open.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood colour through October, making it the most comfortable stretch for camping. Winter camping is possible but limited: freezing nights, occasional snow, and reduced services mean most travellers wait until March or April to return.
How to book campgrounds near New Harmony
Harmonie State Park uses the Indiana DNR reservation system, run through ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 2 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance, which matters for holiday weekends and the park's Halloween campout, both of which sell out early.
Beall Woods State Park, being in Illinois, uses the Illinois DNR's Camp Illinois reservation system on a separate rolling window. The Grayville / I-64 KOA Holiday books directly through KOA's site or app and typically accepts reservations year-round for its pull-through RV sites. Smaller operations such as the Vanderburgh 4-H Center and Weather Rock Camp Ground are best booked by phone.
For peak-season Fridays and Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day, booking eight to twelve weeks out is a safe rule at the state parks.
What to expect at campgrounds near New Harmony
Harmonie's campground sits about three miles from the entrance gate, on rolling terrain above the Wabash floodplain, shaded by mature hardwoods that keep most sites covered even at midday. Expect a paved drive in, thinner weekday crowds especially in the early loops, and generous spacing between neighbours. Most sites offer electric hookups; there is no full sewer at individual sites, but a dump station is available on-site. Each site features a fire ring and picnic table.
Cell service is reasonable near the campground loops but drops off on the trails and along the river. The KOA at Grayville offers a more predictable RV-park experience with full hookups, laundry, and easy interstate access, while Beall Woods leans rustic with basic electric sites. Bring bug spray from May through September, and expect deer and wild-turkey sightings around dawn and dusk.
