Campgrounds and RV parks near Porter, IN

Porter sits on the southern shore of Lake Michigan in northwest Indiana, wedged between Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park. The two parks share a boundary and give RV travelers access to roughly 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, along with dunes, oak savannas, wetlands, and forest trails. The closest option is Indiana Dunes State Park, a busy family campground with electric sites, showers, and a camp store, all within walking distance of the beach. Just to the east, Dunewood at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore offers a quieter, wooded no-hookup experience for smaller rigs and tent campers. Private options in the surrounding towns include Sand Creek Campground, Lakeshore Camp Resort, and Michigan City Campground, which serve RVers who want full hookups and resort-style amenities. Chicago is about an hour west, and the South Shore commuter rail runs through the area, so many families combine dune camping with a city day trip without moving the RV.

Indiana Dunes State Park uses the Indiana DNR reservation system through ReserveAmerica, with sites bookable up to six months in advance. All 140 sites in the electric loop offer electric hookups, and summer weekends move fast once the six-month window opens at noon. Dunewood at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is reserved through Recreation.gov. Reservations open November 15 for the following camping season, then convert to a rolling six-month window. Summer weekend sites often disappear within days of release, so setting a calendar reminder for the exact release date is the reliable path. Private parks like Sand Creek Campground, Lakeshore Camp Resort, and Michigan City Campground take direct bookings through their own websites or by phone and generally offer more flexibility for last-minute or full-hookup stays.
