Campgrounds near Roachdale, Indiana
Roachdale sits in Putnam County in west-central Indiana, roughly 40 miles west of Indianapolis and within easy driving distance of Crawfordsville, Greencastle, and Rockville. The area is farm country crossed by Sugar Creek and Big Raccoon Creek, with state-managed parks and recreation areas offering the closest public campgrounds. Private RV parks and family campgrounds fill in the gaps around the towns.
Most RV travelers using Roachdale as a base camp stay within an hour of two major state properties: Cecil M. Harden Lake, the 2,060-acre reservoir formed by damming Big Raccoon Creek for flood control, which supports boating, fishing, hiking, swimming, and picnicking alongside the nearby Historic Mansfield Roller Mill, and Shades State Park, known for sandstone cliffs above Sugar Creek. Raccoon State Recreation Area, on Cecil M. Harden Lake, is the largest developed public campground in the immediate area.
Options range from full-hookup private parks like Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals and Crawfordsville KOA Journey to state-managed sites at Raccoon State Recreation Area and Shades State Park, plus smaller private grounds such as Fallen Rock Campground to the southwest.
Things to do near Roachdale
Water recreation drives most trips. At Cecil M. Harden Lake, the 2,060-acre reservoir features a sandy swimming beach with concessions, boat rentals, and multiple boat ramps, and campers commonly fish for bass, bluegill, and catfish with an Indiana fishing license. Sugar Creek is a popular paddling stream, and Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals offers on-site canoe, kayak, and tube trips on the creek.
Hiking is concentrated at Shades State Park and the adjoining Pine Hills Nature Preserve, with rugged trails leading to Devil's Punchbowl, Silver Cascade Falls, Inspiration Point, and Lover's Leap. Shades has one of the darkest skies in Indiana and hosts star parties through the Wabash Valley Astronomical Society.
Parke County's covered bridges and the Historic Mansfield Roller Mill add rainy-day options within a short drive.

West-central Indiana has four distinct seasons. Summer is the busiest camping stretch, with warm, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy weekend demand at lake and river campgrounds. Sites at Raccoon State Recreation Area book out early for holiday weekends, and private parks fill fast during Parke County's covered bridge and canoeing seasons.
Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures and thinner crowds. Fall is often the strongest window for hikers: temperatures moderate, insects ease, and hardwoods above Sugar Creek turn color through October. Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals operates as a seasonal campground tied to warm-weather months, so travelers planning shoulder-season stays should confirm dates directly with the office.
Winter operations vary by property. Raccoon State Recreation Area lists year-round status, though services and loops may be reduced in the cold months, while several private campgrounds close or scale back to seasonal-only operations. Confirm loop and hookup availability before booking a cold-weather trip.

Richard was very responsive to any questions that I had prior to picking unit up. Trailer was very clean and still looks like new inside. Had all the basic necessities both inside and out to ensure easy set-up. Would highly recommend this unit if you are camping in Indy area. Donnie Luce-CA

I had a great vacation and the ease of renting the camper made it so much better than staying in a hotel. Richard made it an easy transaction and was there if I needed any help. The camper was accommodating, very clean and comfortable to sleep in. I won't hesitate to do this again in the future and look forward to having another fulfilled adventure.

How to book a campsite near Roachdale
State-managed sites at Raccoon State Recreation Area and Shades State Park are booked through the Indiana DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance, which is the window most families use for summer holiday weekends. Sites include electric and non-electric options at Raccoon, while Shades is primarily non-electric with a dump station and water fill for RVs.
Private campgrounds handle their own booking. Crawfordsville KOA Journey reserves through the KOA website, and Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals accepts reservations online only, with a cancellation and date-change policy requiring 7 days' notice for standard stays and 14 days for holidays and special events.
For peak weekends, book state-park sites the day the six-month window opens and treat private parks like Fallen Rock Campground and the KOA as backup options.
What to expect on-site
Terrain around Roachdale is rolling farmland cut by wooded creek valleys. Sites at Raccoon State Recreation Area sit in mixed hardwood loops around the reservoir, and many campsites require significant leveling due to steep grades. The Lakeview loop provides non-electric sites with partial water views through trees, while Whitetail and other electric loops pack RVs closer together, with loop-end sites offering more space and privacy. Bring leveling blocks.
Amenities at Raccoon include drinking water, flush and vault toilets, hot showers, a dump station, an amphitheater, and a summer camp store. Cell service can be spotty in parts of the park. Shades State Park is non-electric throughout its family campground, with a dump station, water fill, showers, and vault toilets, and some of the state's most rugged hiking trails just outside the loops.
Indiana DNR restricts firewood movement: use kiln-dried lumber, bark-free wood from an Indiana source, or bundles carrying a USDA or state compliance stamp.
