Campgrounds and RV parks near Schererville, IN

The dominant draw is the Lake Michigan shoreline. Indiana Dunes National Park hugs 15 miles of the southern shore of Lake Michigan, and its 16,000 acres include roughly 50 miles of trails over dunes, wetlands, prairies, rivers, and forests. Families use it for swimming, kite-flying on the beach, and moderate day hikes. Indiana Dunes State Park sits adjacent to the national park and offers its own developed beach access, modern restroom and shower facilities, and connecting trail systems into the dune ridges. The nearby South Shore Line commuter rail also provides a car-free option for a day trip into Chicago without moving the rig. Birdwatching is another regional draw, with the Indiana Dunes area recognized as a migratory hotspot along the southern edge of Lake Michigan. Spring and fall migration windows pair well with the shoulder-season camping calendar before summer crowds arrive.

Summer is peak season around the Indiana Dunes because of Lake Michigan recreation including boating, kayaking, and swimming, while spring and fall are generally cool with good weather for hiking and beach walks without the crowds. Families targeting beach days should plan for June through August; travelers who prefer quieter campgrounds and cooler hiking will do better in May, September, or early October. Winter closures are the main planning constraint. The Indiana Dunes area sees cold, snowy winters, and the national and state park campgrounds close during that stretch, though winter day use including cross-country skiing and hiking is still available in both parks. Dunewood Campground operates April 1 through November 1 and has no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, though restrooms, showers, potable water, and a dump station are available on-site. Private parks near Schererville tend to follow a similar seasonal rhythm, opening in mid-spring and closing after the fall color run in late October. Confirm shoulder-season dates directly with each campground, as opening weekends shift with weather.

Roads in and around Schererville are flat, well-paved, and easy to navigate with a rental RV. Most private parks in the area offer level sites with 30- or 50-amp electric, water, and sewer, plus a dump station for campers without full hookups. Cell coverage is generally strong given proximity to the Chicago metro. Expect wooded, quieter settings at the private campgrounds and busier, beach-oriented atmospheres at the Indiana Dunes parks. Dunewood has 67 total sites with fire rings and picnic tables at each site, flush toilets, hot showers, potable water at central stations, and a dump station near the entrance, but no hookups, so it favors self-contained rigs. Parking near the beach can be a challenge during peak season, so arrive early or use the South Shore Line for shoreline access. Pack sunscreen, water, and mosquito repellent for wetland trails, and bring layers even in summer as lake breezes cool evenings quickly.
