Campgrounds near South Haven, Indiana
South Haven sits in Porter County in northwest Indiana, within a short drive of Lake Michigan's southern shore and the Indiana Dunes. The area is one of the busiest RV camping bases in the Midwest, with public and private campgrounds concentrated between Portage, Chesterton, Beverly Shores, and Michigan City.
The two anchor public options are Indiana Dunes State Park, set on 2,182 acres with three miles of Lake Michigan beach and roughly 140 electric campsites, and Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park, which offers 66 wooded sites without hookups. Private options nearby include Lakeshore Camp Resort in Portage, Sand Creek Campground in Chesterton, and Michigan City Campground east of the national park, all offering full hookups.
Drive times from South Haven to these campgrounds range from roughly 15 to 40 minutes, making the town a practical staging point for families combining beach days, hiking, and short trips into the Chicago area.
Things to do near South Haven
The main draw is Lake Michigan. Indiana Dunes State Park manages three miles of guarded beach along with tall dunes that rise nearly 200 feet above the shoreline, and the adjacent Indiana Dunes National Park hugs about 15 miles of coast with 50 miles of trails crossing dunes, wetlands, prairies, and forest.
Families typically split time between swimming, dune hikes such as the 3 Dune Challenge, and birding along the wetlands. Cyclists use the Calumet, Prairie Duneland, and Marquette Greenway trails that link the parks and nearby towns.
Off the water, the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center on State Road 49 in Porter is the standard first stop for maps, ranger advice, and activity guides. Michigan City adds a working lighthouse, Washington Park, and a downtown casino for adult evenings.

Peak RV season runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, when both public campgrounds fill well in advance and weekend sites at Dunewood can book out within days of release. Summer weather is warm and humid, with May and June often the wettest months and thunderstorms common in the afternoon.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Dunewood Campground operates roughly April through October and has no hookups, so shoulder-season campers should be prepared for cold nights and use RV heaters. Indiana Dunes State Park Campground stays open year-round, but water is turned off and modern restrooms close from November through April, so winter stays are essentially dry camping.
Private campgrounds vary. Sand Creek Campground and Lakeshore Camp Resort typically run seasonally from spring into fall, while Michigan City Campground stays open through more of the year. Confirm dates directly with each operator before booking a shoulder-season trip.

How to book campgrounds near South Haven
Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park is reserved through Recreation.gov on a six-month rolling window, with sites for the upcoming season first available in mid-November. Summer weekends often book within days, so setting a calendar reminder for the release date is the safest approach.
Indiana Dunes State Park Campground is booked through the Indiana State Parks reservation site on ReserveAmerica or by phone. Reservations open up to six months in advance and are strongly recommended for any summer weekend.
Lakeshore Camp Resort, Sand Creek Campground, and Michigan City Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer holiday weekends should be booked months out.
What RV travelers should expect
Hookups vary widely. Indiana Dunes State Park offers electric-only service at 20, 30, and 50 amps on paved pads with a dump station and central water fills. Private parks such as Lakeshore Camp Resort and Michigan City Campground provide full water, electric, and sewer, while Dunewood Campground has no hookups at individual sites but does have restrooms, showers, potable water, and a dump station near the entrance.
Site length is worth checking before booking. Dunewood sites have variable RV length limits, so larger rigs should confirm dimensions on Recreation.gov before booking. State park sites at Indiana Dunes accommodate rigs up to about 55 feet.
Expect separate entrance fees at both public parks, non-resident rates apply at the state park, and pets must be leashed on national park property.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near South Haven, IN
How much does it cost to rent an RV in South Haven, IN?
An RV rental in South Haven, IN typically runs between $95 and $250 per night, with travel trailers on the lower end and Class A motorhomes at the top. Because South Haven sits in Porter County just south of the Indiana Dunes, demand spikes from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so booking 4-6 weeks ahead helps lock in better rates. For a cheap RV rental in South Haven, consider mid-week pickups (Tuesday-Thursday) and shoulder months like late April, May, September, and early October when nightly rates can drop 20-30%. Pro tip: filter by travel trailers under 25 feet for the best value, especially if your host offers delivery to a nearby campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Haven%2C%20IndianaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in South Haven, IN?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in South Haven. Indiana does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and trailers listed on RVezy, even for larger Class A coaches. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified inside the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country alongside your home license. Most first-time renters are pleasantly surprised at how simple the requirements really are.

rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy for an RV rental in South Haven, IN?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel, and RVezy support can help if unusual circumstances like severe Lake Michigan storms affect your trip. You'll see the full cancellation terms during checkout and in your booking confirmation. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook, so you can plan your South Haven RV trip without that 'what if' hanging over you.

nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in South Haven, IN?
Yes, RV delivery in South Haven is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many RVezy hosts in the Porter County area offer delivery and setup directly to popular spots like Indiana Dunes State Park Campground, Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park, or your driveway in the South Haven, Portage, or Valparaiso area. The host arrives, levels the RV, connects the hookups, and walks you through everything from the awning to the water heater. Most fill up fast in summer, so reserve at least 6-8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends.
nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/campground.htmWhen is the best time to visit South Haven, IN in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in South Haven, IN. Summer (June-August) brings warm days in the upper 70s to mid-80s°F perfect for Lake Michigan swimming and dunes hiking, while September and early October cool to the 60s and low 70s°F with stunning fall color across Porter County and fewer crowds at the dunes. Spring (April-May) is mild but rainy. Winters get cold, with January averaging 20-30°F and lake-effect snow, so most campgrounds close from late October through April. Insider tip: book a September trip to catch the harvest season at nearby u-pick orchards and warm beach days without the summer rush.

Many first-timers choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for easier handling. Pro tip: book delivery for your first trip and skip the driving entirely until you feel ready.

visitindiana.com/How much should I budget for fuel on a South Haven RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan than you'd think. Gas prices in Porter County typically sit near or slightly below the national average, and most RVs you'll rent in South Haven get between 8-14 miles per gallon depending on size: a campervan rental South Haven (Class B) gets 16-20 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 10-12 MPG, and larger Class A coaches around 7-9 MPG. For a typical 3-day, 300-mile trip in a Class C, expect roughly $90-$140 in fuel. Travel trailers don't burn their own gas, but your tow vehicle's MPG will drop 25-35% with a trailer behind it. Pro tip: fuel up at the Pilot or Love's truck stops along I-94 near Portage where the lanes accommodate big rigs.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near South Haven, IN?

Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park books through Recreation.gov 6 months out and is similarly competitive. Private campgrounds like Sand Creek and Yogi Bear's Jellystone usually require 6-8 weeks for peak summer dates. For a flexible South Haven RV trip, aim for Sunday-Thursday arrivals or shoulder season (May, September, October) when you can often book just 1-2 weeks ahead.

Construction season runs roughly April through October, so check INDOT's TrafficWise map before you roll. Once you're past Portage heading east toward the Dunes, it's smooth sailing.

Use the message feature to ask the host directly about cold-weather readiness and whether they include extras like heated water hoses or insulated skirting. Indiana Dunes State Park stays open year-round with electric sites available for cozy hookups, and the snowy dunes near Mount Tom are spectacular in January.
