Camping near Sweetser, Indiana
Sweetser sits in Grant County in north-central Indiana, within a short drive of two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood-control reservoirs that anchor most of the region's camping: Mississinewa Lake to the northwest and Salamonie Lake to the northeast. Both reservoirs are managed for recreation by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which operates the developed state recreation areas around them.
RV travelers using Sweetser as a base typically stay at Miami State Recreation Area on Mississinewa Lake, which is the only camping area at that reservoir, at the Modern campground at Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area on Salamonie Lake, or at the primitive Apple Orchard loop at Lost Bridge West. Smaller private options in the immediate area include Hidden Lake Campground and White Oaks Mobile Home Park.
The surrounding landscape is a mix of reservoir shoreline, hardwood forest, farmland, and small towns. Wabash sits about 17 miles from Salamonie, Huntington about 15 miles, and Marion about 15 miles, which keeps groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies close to any campsite in the area.
Things to do near Sweetser
Water recreation drives most trips. Mississinewa Lake covers roughly 3,210 water acres and Salamonie Lake about 2,665 acres, with boat ramps, marinas, sandy swim beaches, and fishing for bass, walleye, and crappie. Beaches at both reservoirs open Memorial Day weekend and close after Labor Day weekend, with no lifeguards on duty and swimming at your own risk from sunrise to sunset.
On land, Miami SRA has hiking options such as the 2.5-mile Blue Heron loop through moderate terrain with scenic views of the lake and dam and the 1.0-mile Shepoconnah Trail, which begins behind the modern campground and wanders through open meadows and young forest. Lost Bridge West offers short family-friendly hiking, roughly 19 miles of bridle trails, and mountain-bike trails including beginner routes.
Indoors, the Upper Wabash Interpretive Services Center at Lost Bridge West covers local wildlife, lake operation, and cultural history.

Camping at Mississinewa Lake and Salamonie Lake is available year round, with limited service during the off-season. All facilities at Mississinewa open by May 15th, and the seasonal camping program at Miami SRA runs May 1 through October 31, subject to weather and lake conditions.
Both reservoirs are flood-control projects, and facilities including the beach, horse trails, and some campsites at Salamonie may temporarily close following periods of heavy rain. Winter draw-down at Mississinewa begins the beginning of October and is complete by December 1st, with all ramps except Red Bridge closed through winter and summer pool restored by May 1st. Blue-green algae can be present in these lakes year round, so campers should avoid drinking lake water and shower after swimming.
Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest, and modern electric loops fill early. Spring and fall bring lighter crowds, mild temperatures, and better site selection, though comfort stations and shower buildings may be reduced in the shoulder season.
How to book
Sites at Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake and at the Modern and Apple Orchard Primitive loops at Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area are reserved through the Indiana DNR reservation system, hosted on ReserveAmerica. Electric and non-electric campsites can be reserved a maximum of six months prior to arrival date, until 2 p.m. Eastern on the arrival date. Rent-a-camp cabins and shelters can be reserved up to one year prior to arrival.
The minimum age to rent a campsite is 18, a single site can be reserved for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights, and the camper must vacate for 48 hours before returning on a new reservation. Two vehicles are allowed per site, with additional vehicles parked in the overflow lot near the campground gatehouse.
Private options such as Hidden Lake Campground and White Oaks Mobile Home Park are booked directly with the operator.
What to expect
Modern loops at Mississinewa and Salamonie offer paved or gravel pads, electric hookups, potable water fill stations, dump stations, and modern comfort stations with showers. Salamonie's modern campground at Lost Bridge West offers 245 sites, many with 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service, and some with full hookups. The electric RV sites can accommodate rigs up to 75 feet in length.
Expect a family-oriented state-park atmosphere: pets must be on a leash of six feet or less and attended at all times, and quiet hours run from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. A site may not be occupied by more than 6 people, and is limited to 1 main camping unit, 1 additional tent, and 1 dining fly, subject to property discretion.
An Indiana DNR entrance fee applies per vehicle, paid on first entry, with the receipt serving as the in-and-out pass for the remainder of the stay.
