Campgrounds near Tri-Lakes, Indiana
Tri-Lakes is an unincorporated community in Whitley County, in northeastern Indiana, roughly a half-hour drive northwest of Fort Wayne. The area sits inside a cluster of small kettle lakes carved by the last glacial advance, which shapes both the local recreation and the campground options within a short drive.
The anchor public land nearby is Chain O'Lakes State Park in Noble County, about 20 minutes north of Tri-Lakes. Nine connecting lakes are the center of activity at Chain O'Lakes, where visitors can paddle through the chain of kettle lakes, hike 29 miles of forested trails, fish the electric-motors-only lakes, stay overnight in a forested hillside family cabin, visit the historic one-room Stanley Schoolhouse, or explore the Nature Center. The campground offers a mix of electric, non-electric, and primitive sites, giving RV travelers a wide range of hookup and site-size options in one park.
Private options fill in around the lakes. Blue Lake Resort Campground, Forest Ridge Family Campground, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort at Barton Lake, and Indian Lakes Campground each sit within a manageable drive of Tri-Lakes and cover the spectrum from quiet lakefront sites to amenity-heavy family resorts.
Things to do around Tri-Lakes
The lakes drive the itinerary. Chain O'Lakes State Park offers paddling through connected kettle lakes, forested trails, fishing on electric-motors-only lakes, the historic Stanley Schoolhouse, and a Nature Center. Only trolling and electric motors may be operated on the lakes at Chain O'Lakes State Park; gasoline motors may remain on board but may not be operated.
Families with kids often base at a resort-style park. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Barton Lake has 540 campsites and over 40 cabins, with attractions including an indoor pool, three outdoor pools, a Water Zone with splash pad, five playgrounds, a mini golf course, a swimming beach, a large recreation building, wagon rides, basketball courts, and sand volleyball courts.
Beyond the water, expect quiet county roads for cycling, farm stands in season, and small-town stops in Columbia City, Albion, and Kendallville.

The main RV season runs from late spring through October. At Indiana state parks, most properties turn off water, close modern restrooms, and winterize full-hookup sites during November through April. Camping is still available at a reduced rate at almost all locations during this time. Properties begin turning on water and opening other facilities between mid-March and late April depending on forecasted temperatures. Full amenities are available May through October each year. Summer weekends and holidays book fastest, so it pays to reserve well ahead.
Shoulder seasons are quieter and often more comfortable. Fall brings hardwood color across the region, with the glacial kettle-lake landscape at its most photogenic. Spring can be wet, and thunderstorms are common: there is an average of 39 thunderstorm days per year at Fort Wayne with most occurring from May to August.
Winter is cold but not closed. Chain O'Lakes State Park is open year round. Cross-country skiing and ice fishing are possible when conditions allow. Note the ongoing water advisory: blue-green algae has been found in the lakes year-round. Don't drink the water. Shower after you swim.

How to book campgrounds near Tri-Lakes
State park sites are booked through the Indiana DNR reservation portal, operated on the ReserveAmerica platform. Reservations must be made 2 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance, so summer weekends should be locked in well before the season starts. Indiana State Park visitors can make reservations for camping, inns, cabins, shelters, recreation buildings and group camps online or by calling 1-866-622-6746.
Private parks such as Blue Lake Resort Campground, Forest Ridge Family Campground, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort at Barton Lake, and Indian Lakes Campground book directly through each property's own website or phone line. Holiday weekends at family resorts often sell out months ahead, so call to confirm big-rig access and full-hookup availability.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is gently rolling glacial country with hardwood forest and small lakes. Chain O'Lakes campsites are wooded and shaded; read site descriptions carefully for inclines and site dimensions. Sites do not have water hookups on the electric loop, so campers should arrive with fresh water tanks filled. After Labor Day, comfort stations may be closed based on park and weather conditions. Comfort Stations 1, 3 and 4 usually open by May 1, with others opening after the danger of freezing temperatures has passed, usually early May.
Boating rules matter for trip planning. Only trolling and electric motors may be operated on the lakes at Chain O'Lakes State Park. Neighboring private lakes generally allow gas motors, so match the campground to the boat. Groceries, propane, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Columbia City and Fort Wayne.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Tri-Lakes, IN
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Tri-Lakes, IN?
RV rental in Tri-Lakes is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy northeast Indiana's lake country. Travel trailers typically run $75 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250, and larger Class A coaches can reach $300 or more. Because Tri-Lakes sits in rural Whitley County, weekday rates are noticeably cheaper than weekends, and booking outside July 4th week can save you 20 to 30 percent. For a cheap RV rental Tri-Lakes families love, filter by travel trailers and look for hosts who include generator hours or basic kitchen kits at no extra charge. Pro tip: booking Sunday through Thursday around Big Cedar Lake almost always unlocks the best value.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tri-Lakes%2C%20IndianaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Tri-Lakes, Indiana?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Tri-Lakes, IN. Indiana does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers, which covers virtually every RV on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork waiting for you at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Most first-time renters tell us the licensing piece was way easier than expected, which leaves more time for choosing your lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RVezy's protection package included with my Tri-Lakes RV rental?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Tri-Lakes automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of the driveway feeling fully covered. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind without the hassle of arranging a separate policy. During checkout, you choose the protection level that fits your comfort level (hosts don't pick this, you do), and the cost is rolled right into your total. The plan is specifically designed for peer-to-peer RV rentals. Pro tip: pick your coverage tier early so you can budget confidently for your week at Shriner Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Tri-Lakes RV trip?
Booking an RV rental in Tri-Lakes is genuinely low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not individual hosts. That means consistent, predictable rules regardless of which lakefront listing you choose. There's a money-back grace period right after you book, and additional refund options that depend on how far out your trip start date is. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your plans stay protected. Pro tip: review the cancellation details on your booking confirmation, and reach out to RVezy support anytime before, during, or after your trip if life throws a curveball at your Tri-Lakes plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Tri-Lakes RV rental?
Absolutely. A pet-friendly RV rental Tri-Lakes hosts offer is one of the most popular booking filters, and dogs love the lake life as much as you do. Just click the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers where pups are welcome (some hosts ask for a small cleaning fee, listed upfront). Once you arrive, Chain O' Lakes State Park about 20 minutes south allows leashed pets on most trails and at the campground, and the open shorelines around Big Cedar Lake are great for morning walks. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details, and pack a towel for after those inevitable Indiana lake swims.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/chain-o-lakes-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or lake house in Tri-Lakes?
Yes, RV delivery Tri-Lakes is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig straight to Chain O' Lakes State Park, a private cabin on Big Cedar Lake, or a family member's driveway off Fish Hatchery Road, set up the awning and slides, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Just turn on the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination address to see hosts who serve the Whitley County area. Delivery fees are usually based on round-trip miles. Pro tip: book delivery and you can fly into Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA) instead of driving.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/chain-o-lakes-state-park/How do mileage policies work on a Tri-Lakes RV rental?
Mileage is simple and transparent on RVezy: every Tri-Lakes listing shows the daily mileage allowance upfront, with a small per-mile fee (usually $0.30 to $0.50) if you go over. Many hosts also offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages, which are perfect if you're planning a bigger loop. For reference, from Tri-Lakes you're about 30 miles to Fort Wayne, 50 miles to Warsaw and the Lake Wawasee area, 100 miles to Indianapolis, and 160 miles to the Indiana Dunes National Park on Lake Michigan. Pro tip: estimate your full route before booking, then filter for hosts whose mileage package matches, so your final invoice has zero surprises.
in.gov/indot/Where are the best campgrounds near Tri-Lakes, IN to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice when RV camping Tri-Lakes. Top picks: Chain O' Lakes State Park in Albion (about 20 minutes away) features electric sites woven through eight connected glacial lakes; Tri-Lake Camping Resort just west on US-30 is a long-running private park with full hookups and a swim pond; Indian Springs Campground near Garrett offers wooded sites about 25 minutes east; and Crooked Lake near Columbia City sits right on the water with seasonal and nightly options. For a state park experience with more shoreline, Pokagon State Park up near Angola is about 45 minutes north. Pro tip: reserve Indiana state park sites through camp.IN.gov as soon as the six-month window opens, especially for summer weekends.
camp.in.gov/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Tri-Lakes, IN?
Late May through early October is prime time for a Tri-Lakes RV trip, with peak lake weather in June, July, and August when daytime highs sit in the low 80s and water temps in Big Cedar and Little Cedar Lakes are perfect for swimming. September is the local insider's secret: warm days in the mid-70s, cool sleeping weather, fewer mosquitoes, and noticeably lower campground prices. Early October brings vivid hardwood color through Chain O' Lakes State Park, while winter dips into the 20s with regular snow, so most lakeside hosts pause bookings from November through March. Pro tip: aim for the weekend after Labor Day for the sweet spot of summer warmth and quiet shorelines.
weather.gov/iwx/I'm a first-time RV renter. Will I really be okay driving around Tri-Lakes?
You're going to do great, and Tri-Lakes is honestly one of the easiest places in Indiana to learn. The rural roads around Thorncreek and Smith townships are flat, lightly trafficked, and have generous shoulders, and US-30 and SR-9 give you wide lanes for getting back to Fort Wayne or up to Auburn. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, slide-outs, the propane system, dumping tanks, and hookups, so you won't be left guessing. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: do your first practice loop on Fish Hatchery Road before heading out on a longer route.
in.gov/indot/What happens if something goes wrong with my RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Tri-Lakes includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering tows, flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery anywhere in Indiana or beyond. If a slide-out sticks or the fridge acts up, your host is your first call (they know their rig best), and RVezy's support team is available around the clock as backup. Whitley County and the surrounding area have several RV-friendly repair shops in Columbia City and Fort Wayne, usually less than 30 minutes from Tri-Lakes. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway, and you'll never have to scramble for it later.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trips from Tri-Lakes, IN?
An RV road trip from Tri-Lakes opens up some of the Midwest's best lake and dune country. Top routes: head 45 minutes north to Pokagon State Park on Lake James for the famous toboggan run and sandy beach; drive 2.5 hours northwest to Indiana Dunes National Park along Lake Michigan for 15 miles of shoreline; cruise 1.5 hours northeast into Michigan's Irish Hills and Hidden Lake Gardens; or take 2 hours south to Brown County State Park for hardwood hills near Nashville, IN. Cross-border travel into Michigan and Ohio is allowed (just confirm with your host); Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: loop Pokagon and Chain O' Lakes for an easy two-park weekend.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/How much should I budget for fuel on a Tri-Lakes RV rental?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, so a quick plan goes a long way. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves (you'll just notice your tow vehicle drinks more), Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 9 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches 6 to 9 MPG. Indiana gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, with stations in Columbia City and Churubusco being the most convenient fill-ups near Tri-Lakes. A weeklong 300-mile loop in a Class C usually costs around $100 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: top off at the Speedway or Lassus Handy Dandy on US-30 before heading deeper into Whitley County's lake roads.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Tri-Lakes?
For Indiana state parks like Chain O' Lakes and Pokagon, book the day the six-month reservation window opens at camp.IN.gov, especially for any Friday or Saturday between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Private parks like Tri-Lake Camping Resort and Indian Springs usually open up 6 to 12 months ahead and fill quickly for July 4th and Labor Day weekends. Midweek summer sites are far easier and often available just a week out. Walk-up sites do exist but are not reliable on holidays. Pro tip: once your Tri-Lakes RV rental is locked in on RVezy, book your campsite that same day, then message your host so they know exactly where to deliver if you've chosen that option.
camp.in.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Tri-Lakes, IN?
Driving conditions around Tri-Lakes are genuinely RV-friendly. Roads are flat, the terrain is gentle glacial moraine, and you won't encounter mountain passes or steep grades anywhere in Whitley County. US-30 is a divided four-lane that connects you east to Fort Wayne and west to Warsaw, and SR-9 runs north-south through Columbia City. Watch for narrow county roads with soft shoulders around the lakes, occasional Amish horse-and-buggy traffic in nearby LaGrange and Noble counties, and summer thunderstorms that can bring quick downpours. Winter brings lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan, so most rentals run May to October. Pro tip: avoid Fish Hatchery Road's tighter curves at dusk when deer are most active.
in.gov/indot/traveler-information/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Tri-Lakes?
Campgrounds near Tri-Lakes are well-equipped for any RV setup. Chain O' Lakes State Park offers electric sites (50 and 30 amp), modern restrooms with showers, a central dump station, and potable water fill stations, plus a camp store and swimming beach. Private parks like Tri-Lake Camping Resort and Indian Springs Campground typically include full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pool access. If you need to dump tanks or fill fresh water mid-trip, the Chain O' Lakes dump station is open to registered campers, and several gas stations on US-30 offer potable water. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator, since hookup placement varies site to site.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/chain-o-lakes-state-park/What's included inside an RV rental in Tri-Lakes?
Tri-Lakes RV rentals come ready for lake life. Expect comfortable beds (queen, bunk, or convertible dinettes depending on the rig), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Most motorhome rental Tri-Lakes listings also include a TV, USB charging, an awning, and outdoor camp chairs. Many hosts add generators, kitchen kits with cookware and dishes, linens, and bike racks at no charge or for a small fee. Wi-Fi depends on cellular signal, which is solid around Big Cedar Lake. Pro tip: check the amenities section of each listing carefully so you only pack what's not already onboard.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/wireless-internet-access-serviceWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Tri-Lakes rental?
RVezy hosts in Tri-Lakes offer add-ons that make your trip easier and more fun. Popular ones include generators ($15 to $40 per day), kitchen and linen packages ($25 to $75 flat), bike racks, outdoor grills, kayaks or paddleboards (especially valuable on Round Lake and Shriner Lake), and pre-stocked propane. Pickup is usually at the host's address in or around Whitley County, though delivery to Chain O' Lakes State Park or a private lake cabin is widely available. Mileage policies and generator hours are listed clearly on every listing. Pro tip: if you're planning to fish Big Cedar Lake, ask your host whether they offer rod storage or a small cooler add-on, and grab your Indiana fishing license online before pickup.
in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/fishing/How does payment and the security deposit work for my Tri-Lakes RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through RVezy, so you never exchange cash or cards with your host. You pay the rental total (nightly rate, service fee, chosen protection plan, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card at booking. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card shortly before pickup; the amount is shown on each listing and is separate from your booking payment. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition with tanks emptied and fuel topped off, that hold is released after the trip. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at both pickup and dropoff to keep your Tri-Lakes RV trip deposit-return totally smooth.
