Campgrounds and RV parks near Veedersburg, IN

Turkey Run State Park is the main draw, with more than 14 miles of easy to very rugged trails through one of the most unique landscapes in the state. Expect ladders, creek-bed sections, and the suspension bridge over Sugar Creek. Canoe, kayak, and tube rentals are available through local outfitters, and the park also has a saddle barn with guided horseback rides, a nature center, and an Olympic-size swimming pool open in summer. Shades State Park offers a quieter counterpart. Rugged trails through wooded ravines reach landmarks like the Devil's Punchbowl, Inspiration Point, and Lover's Leap, with longer walks available in the adjoining Pine Hills Nature Preserve. Sugar Creek also runs through Shades for canoeing and fishing for smallmouth bass and catfish. Shades has one of the darkest skies in Indiana and is popular with astronomy groups. Parke County's covered bridges make an easy driving loop for rest days.

The camping season in this part of Indiana runs heaviest from late spring through late fall. Turkey Run is open year-round, and while autumn draws visitors for the colors, summer is by far the busiest overall period. Fall weekends around peak foliage in October fill months in advance, so booking early in the year is essential for those dates. Electric campsites at Turkey Run operate on a defined seasonal booking window, generally covering roughly mid-May through mid-November, with reservations opening up to six months in advance of arrival. Outside that window only limited winter camping is available. Shades State Park campground stays open year-round, but its RV campsites are unavailable from roughly November through March, with peak usage during the summer holidays. Spring brings wet trails and higher creek levels. Trails at both parks use ravine streambeds as trail surface and can get slippery after rainfall, so campers should check conditions before boating or canoeing. Late fall means shorter days, colder nights, and reduced services at the state-park camp stores.

Turkey Run's campground is a modern, family-oriented facility with 213 electric campsites, each with a picnic table and fire ring. Most sites are back-in and can accommodate rigs up to 45 feet, with a limited number of pull-throughs for larger units. There are no water or sewer hookups at individual sites, but campers have access to drinking water, restrooms, showers, a camp store, and a dump station on-site. Six sites and one cabin are wheelchair accessible. Shades is more primitive, with 105 non-electric family campsites plus backpack and canoe-in sites. Each site has a paved parking pad, table, and steel fire ring. Amenities include drinking water, flush and pit toilets, a bathhouse with hot showers, and a dump station. Sites can handle tents, trailers, and larger RVs, but plan generator use around quiet hours since sites are non-electric. Dogs are allowed at both parks but must be on a leash no longer than six feet. Store food inside the RV overnight; raccoons are active.
