RV camping near Walton, Indiana
Walton sits in Cass County in north-central Indiana, roughly midway between Logansport and Kokomo along U.S. 35. The town is small and rural, but its position on flat farmland puts several established RV campgrounds within a short drive, along with one of the largest reservoir campgrounds in the state.
Private options closest to town include Tall Sycamore Campgrounds, Misthaven Camp Resort, Spring Hill Campground, and Woodys Camp and Bait. These lean toward family and weekend use, with a mix of full-hookup, electric, and tent sites suited to travel trailers and Class C rigs.
For a bigger public destination, Mississinewa Lake is a 3,210-acre reservoir offering fishing, hunting, boating, camping and cabins, with attractive habitat and good wildlife viewing for hikers, birders, and touring bicyclists. The campground has over 400 RV campsites with various services available, and Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake serves as the main developed campground on that reservoir and works well as a base for longer regional trips.
Things to do around Walton
Water recreation is the main draw. At Mississinewa Lake, visitors can enjoy swimming at the beach area, boating on the lake with options for both relaxed cruising and water sports like tubing and skiing, and fishing, while numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty wind through the area with excellent opportunities to observe local wildlife. Wildlife watchers can expect ducks, herons, egrets, eagles, orioles, woodpeckers, and kingfishers, along with raccoons, foxes, deer, and rabbits.
Off the water, the surrounding farmland supports cycling on quiet county roads, and the small downtowns of Logansport and Peru add diners, ice cream stops, and Circus City heritage sites in Peru. Families based at Tall Sycamore Campgrounds, Misthaven Camp Resort, or Spring Hill Campground can reach either town in well under half an hour.

The prime RV season runs from mid-spring through early fall. All facilities at Miami State Recreation Area open by May 15th, and summer weekends and holidays fill quickly, so booking several weeks out is normal for lakefront electric sites.
Spring brings wildflowers and strong fishing, but also the wettest stretch of the year in north-central Indiana. Storms and short flood events do occur; recent flooding notices at Mississinewa closed the beach, the Miami SRA boat ramp, and the mooring area behind the campground, so RV travelers should check current park alerts before arrival.
Fall camping is quieter, with cooler nights and reliable dry weekends through October. Winter draw down at the reservoir begins the beginning of October and is complete by December 1st, and all ramps are closed through winter except Red Bridge. Most private campgrounds in the area operate on a seasonal schedule and close or reduce services once nights drop below freezing.
How to book campsites near Walton
For the state site, reservations for Mississinewa Lake Campground are handled through the Indiana State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica, online or by phone. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance and as little as 24 hours before the arrival date. The system lets travelers select electric-only, full hookup, or tent sites and view availability before completing the booking.
Indiana DNR rules apply at Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake: the minimum age to rent a campsite is 18, a single site can be reserved for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights, and the camper must vacate for 48 hours before returning with a new reservation.
Private campgrounds such as Tall Sycamore Campgrounds, Misthaven Camp Resort, Spring Hill Campground, and Woodys Camp and Bait are booked directly with the property, typically by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on-site
The terrain around Walton is flat to gently rolling farmland with scattered woodlots, so most local campgrounds sit on open ground with some tree cover. Sites at the seasonal campground include concrete pads with a patio, fire rings, water and sewage hookups, metered electricity, picnic areas, a playground, and a fishing pier.
Expect basic Midwestern campground amenities: shower and restroom buildings, dump stations, playgrounds, and camp stores at the larger properties. Cell coverage along U.S. 35 is generally reliable, though it can weaken inside the wooded loops at Miami State Recreation Area Mississinewa Lake.
RV travelers should plan for mosquitoes and biting flies near the lake in early summer, thunderstorm potential on hot afternoons, and busy summer weekends. Weekday stays are noticeably quieter across all nearby campgrounds.
