Campgrounds and RV parks near Wanatah, IN

Wanatah sits in LaPorte County in northwest Indiana, roughly a twenty-minute drive south of the Lake Michigan shoreline and the Indiana Dunes. The town works as a quiet, inland base for RV travelers who want to reach the dunes, Michigan City, and the South Shore beaches without paying lakefront rates or fighting summer traffic at the water's edge. Most campgrounds in the area cluster to the north, between Wanatah and the lake. Dunewood, inside Indiana Dunes National Park, has 66 campsites with restrooms and showers but no electric or water hookups, while Michigan City Campground sits on 40 acres about 5 miles from Lake Michigan and 10 miles from the national lakeshore, with 130 full-hookup sites, 14 water-and-electric sites, two fishing ponds, and a swimming pool. Sand Creek Campground near Chesterton and Lakeshore Camp Resort in Portage round out the private options, and Indiana Dunes State Park runs the busiest public campground close to the beach. The area is flat, agricultural, and easy to navigate in a rented motorhome.

Public and private campgrounds use different systems, so plan for two accounts. Reservations at Dunewood Campground run through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window, with sites first available starting November 15 for the following camping season. Summer weekends often book within days of release, so set a reminder. Indiana Dunes State Park bookings are handled at indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com or by calling 1-866-622-6746. Campsite availability opens at noon, six months in advance, and summer weekends can sell out the moment they open. Sand Creek Campground, Michigan City Campground, and Lakeshore Camp Resort take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Book big-rig full-hookup sites early for June through August.
