Camping near Wheatfield, Indiana
Wheatfield sits in northern Jasper County in the Kankakee River lowlands of Northwest Indiana, roughly an hour and a half southeast of Chicago. The town is small and rural, surrounded by farmland, wetlands, and pockets of oak savanna. RV travelers typically use Wheatfield as a quiet base for trips to Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area, the Kankakee River corridor, and Indiana Dunes National Park and State Park on the Lake Michigan shore.
Most overnight options in the immediate area are privately owned camp resorts rather than public campgrounds. Lake Holiday Camp-Resort, Oak Lake RV Resort, Acorn Oaks Campground, Pioneer Family Campground, Inc., and Sand Creek Campground offer RV sites with hookups and typical family-resort amenities.
Public campgrounds are a short drive north into Porter County. Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park and the electric-site campground at Indiana Dunes State Park are the main federal and state options within reasonable range of Wheatfield.
Things to do around Wheatfield
Wildlife viewing is the marquee draw. Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area covers 8,179 acres and offers a unique opportunity to observe large numbers of sandhill cranes during the fall migration. Each fall, thousands of sandhill cranes visit the area's shallow marshes from mid-October through mid-December, and crane numbers peak in late November or early December.
Lake Michigan is within day-trip range. Indiana Dunes National Park covers over 15,000 acres of dunes, oak savannas, swamps, bogs, marshes, prairies, rivers, and forests, and contains 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline from Gary to Michigan City. Four National Natural Landmarks, including Pinhook Bog and Cowles Bog, and one National Historical Landmark, the Bailly Homestead, sit within its boundaries.
Closer to town, families use the Kankakee River for paddling and fishing, and area tourism groups promote sandhill crane viewing at Jasper-Pulaski as a signature fall activity for Jasper County.

Northwest Indiana has a humid continental climate with sharp seasonal swings. Summer is the core RV season: warm, humid days, occasional thunderstorms, and full operation at private campgrounds. July is typically the hottest month, and weekend sites at lake-based resorts fill well in advance.
Spring is variable. Snowmelt and rainy stretches can leave low-lying sites soft, and May brings a marked jump in warmth and frequent rain days. Fall is the standout window for this specific area. Cool, drier weather from late September into November coincides with sandhill crane migration at Jasper-Pulaski, which runs from mid-October through mid-December and peaks in late November or early December.
Winter is cold and snowy. Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park closes for the season, most private RV resorts shut down full services, and travel plans should account for lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan.

How to book campgrounds near Wheatfield
For public land, reservation systems differ. Dunewood Campground is open seasonally April 1 through November 1, and reservations must be made through Recreation.gov. Reservations are on a rolling 6-month window, with sites first available starting November 15 for the following camping season. There are no electric or water hookups at individual sites. Indiana Dunes State Park uses the state's reservation portal, where campsites and shelters are bookable in advance through the Indiana DNR system.
Private resorts in Jasper County, including Lake Holiday Camp-Resort, Oak Lake RV Resort, Acorn Oaks Campground, Pioneer Family Campground, Inc., and Sand Creek Campground, take reservations directly through their own offices or websites. Holiday weekends and peak crane-migration weekends in late November fill earliest, so book those dates well in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Wheatfield is flat, sandy, and low, with wetlands, drainage ditches, and working farmland. Roads to private campgrounds are generally paved county routes suitable for larger rigs, but interior campground roads can be narrow and tree-shaded, so check site length limits before arrival.
Hookups vary. Private RV resorts in the area typically offer water and electric, often 30 and 50 amp, with sewer at many sites. Dunewood Campground has no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, though restrooms, showers, potable water, and a dump station are available on-site.
Expect mosquitoes and biting flies near marsh areas from late spring through early fall, and pack layers for fall crane-viewing mornings. Cell coverage is generally reliable along US-231 and I-65 but can thin out on backroads and inside wildlife areas.

Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Wheatfield RV trip, with July highs around 84°F and comfortable mid-60s lows that are great for campfires by the Kankakee River. Early summer brings the most rain, so pack a rain awning, while September and early October deliver crisp 60s to low 70s and gorgeous fall color across Jasper County's oak and hickory woodlands. Pro tip: target mid-September after Labor Day for the lowest rates and fewer mosquitoes, when campgrounds open up and Jasper-Pulaski's famous sandhill crane migration kicks off.
weather.gov/lot/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Wheatfield?
You'll do great. Wheatfield sits on flat northwest Indiana farmland with quiet two-lane highways like US-231 and SR-10, which are ideal roads for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering how to operate the slides, water system, propane, and dash controls, so you won't leave the driveway until you feel confident. If big-city driving makes you nervous, stay east of Interstate 65 to avoid Chicago traffic entirely. The closest service hubs are Rensselaer (about 15 minutes south), Merrillville (about 40 minutes north), and Valparaiso (about 50 minutes northeast). help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Wheatfield RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Wheatfield. You can cross freely into Illinois (Chicago and Starved Rock are easy day-trip distance), Michigan (Warren Dunes is just over the border), Wisconsin, Ohio, and Kentucky on a standard RVezy booking. Headed to Canada? Many hosts allow it, but you'll need to confirm with them through the listing before you book since insurance documentation has to be arranged. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a classic loop from Wheatfield is a 7-day swing through Indiana Dunes, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Mackinac Island.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to estimate for your Wheatfield trip. Travel trailers don't burn extra fuel themselves, just the tow vehicle (figure 10 to 14 mpg for a half-ton truck), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches run 6 to 10 mpg. Indiana gas prices typically track close to the national average, with stations in Rensselaer and DeMotte plus a Pilot/Flying J just off I-65 for easy diesel access. Pro tip: for a 300-mile weekend loop around the Indiana Dunes in a Class C, budget roughly $100 to $140 in fuel, and use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest station along US-231.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wheatfield?
Booking early is the smart move, and Indiana makes it easy. Indiana State Park campgrounds, including Indiana Dunes State Park, can be reserved up to six months in advance through the official Indiana DNR reservation system at camp.IN.gov, and the most popular summer weekends fill within hours of opening. For private parks like Oak Lake or Thousand Trails Horseshoe Lakes, four to eight weeks of lead time is usually plenty outside of holiday weekends. Willow Slough's primitive sites are first-come, first-served, so weekday arrivals work best. Pro tip: book your campsite first, then your RV, then ask your host about delivery directly to your reserved site.
camp.in.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Wheatfield?
Driving around Wheatfield is genuinely relaxing, which is part of why first-timers love starting their trip here. The terrain is flat farmland with light traffic on US-231, SR-10, and SR-49, and there are no mountain passes or tight switchbacks to worry about. Watch for slow-moving farm equipment in spring and fall, occasional deer crossings at dawn and dusk, and snowy or icy stretches from December through March if you're booking a winter trip. Interstate 65 to the east gives you quick access to Chicago and Indianapolis. Pro tip: avoid I-80/94 through Gary during Chicago rush hour, and route via US-231 to US-30 instead for a calmer drive.
in.gov/indot/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Wheatfield?
You'll find a great range of setups, from full-service resorts to rustic state sites. Thousand Trails Horseshoe Lakes and Oak Lake Family Campground offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi, while Indiana Dunes State Park has electric sites with a centralized dump station and potable water fill. Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area offers primitive and electric sites with vault toilets. Most campgrounds in the area have a dump station for $5 to $15 if you're staying at a non-sewer site. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the host's driveway, since rural fill stations can be limited between Wheatfield and your destination.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/reservations-fees/What's actually inside the RVs available in Wheatfield?
You'll be surprised how loaded these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental Wheatfield comes with a real queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette that converts to a bed, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most Class C and Class A rentals include a generator, awning, outdoor speakers, and a flat-screen TV, while many travel trailers and campervan rental Wheatfield options add solar panels and Bluetooth stereos. Wi-Fi varies (cell hotspots are common; rural northwest Indiana generally has solid Verizon and AT&T coverage). Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and seatbelt count before booking to match your family size.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wheatfield%2C%20IndianaWhat add-ons can I get and how does pickup work?
You can customize your rig. Popular add-ons from Wheatfield hosts include linen and kitchen kits ($30 to $75), camping chairs and outdoor mats, generators, bikes, kayaks, fire pits, and extra propane tanks, all visible on the listing page before checkout. Pickup is usually at the host's address in or near Wheatfield, DeMotte, or Rensselaer, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough covering systems, slide-outs, and dump procedures. Delivery is available from many hosts if you'd rather skip the drive. Mileage policies are listed up front, and Instant Book listings let you confirm in seconds. Pro tip: bundle the kitchen kit and linens to save packing time and head straight to the campfire.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wheatfield%2C%20IndianaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental Indiana through RVezy, payment is processed through the platform with a major credit or debit card, so no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking total (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and released after the trip once the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any issues, take a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, fill the fuel and propane to the level the host requests, and empty the tanks at a dump station before returning. Pro tip: keep your receipts (fuel, dump fees) in the RVezy app messages for a smooth refund.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Wheatfield in winter, and is it worth it?
Yes, and winter can be a quiet, magical time in northwest Indiana if you pick the right rig. Several Wheatfield hosts offer four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces rated for the area's January lows around 19°F. Winter is prime time for ice fishing at Willow Slough, eagle watching along the Kankakee River, and catching the tail end of sandhill crane activity at Jasper-Pulaski. Book a site with 30-amp or 50-amp shore power so you can run the furnace without draining batteries, and ask your host to demo the winterization basics at pickup. Pro tip: filter for four-season rigs or message hosts directly to confirm heated tanks before you book.
