Campgrounds and RV parks near Whiting, IN

Indiana Dunes National Park and the adjacent Indiana Dunes State Park are the anchor attractions, offering sand dunes, Lake Michigan beaches, and trails through wetlands and oak savanna. The 3 Dunes Challenge at the state park and the Cowles Bog Trail in the national park are among the most-hiked routes, and West Beach is a popular family swimming spot. Closer to Whiting, the lakefront trail system runs along Lake Michigan through Whihala Beach and Hammond Marina. Cedar Lake, about 40 minutes south, offers swimming, fishing, and paddling, with Buckley Homestead County Park nearby for a shorter family outing. Chicago is reachable on the South Shore Line commuter rail from Hammond or East Chicago, making museums, the Riverwalk, and Millennium Park a practical car-free day trip from any of the area campgrounds.

The camping season around Whiting is concentrated between late April and late October. Indiana Dunes State Park Campground stays open year-round, while Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park operates April 1 through November 1 and closes November through March. Private parks vary: Lakeshore Camp Resort in Portage runs a spring-through-fall season, while other private parks around Cedar Lake and Crete keep limited winter operations for RVs willing to handle cold weather. Summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busiest, with state and national park sites and lakefront private resorts filling weeks in advance. Beach parking in the Dunes fills by mid-morning on hot weekends. September and early October are the sweet spot for RV travelers: weekday availability opens up, humidity drops, and the dunes and lake trails are much less crowded. Winter camping is possible at select parks, but expect freezing temperatures, potential lake-effect snow, and reduced amenities.

This is an industrial and suburban corridor, not backcountry. Most private RV parks near Whiting have full hookups, paved or gravel roads, laundry, and family amenities like pools, playgrounds, and rec halls. Sites at the larger resorts tend to be close together, and many parks host a mix of transient RVers and long-term seasonal residents. Noise is a common complaint in reviews across the region. Freight rail lines, the Indiana Toll Road, and I-80/94 pass close to several parks, and train horns at night are widely reported. Sites deeper inside each property are generally quieter. Roads in and out of Whiting are flat and easy for larger rigs, but downtown Chicago is not RV-friendly. Plan to leave the RV parked and take the South Shore Line or a car for city trips.
