Campgrounds and RV parks near Williamsport, IN

Hiking is the dominant draw. Turkey Run State Park is known for deep sandstone ravines, ladder trails, a suspension bridge across Sugar Creek, and rugged routes that use streambeds as trail surface. Shades State Park offers similar terrain with quieter trails, some of the darkest skies in Indiana that draw astronomy groups, and access to the adjoining Pine Hills Nature Preserve. On the water, Sugar Creek is a favorite for canoeing and kayaking, and Big Pine Creek near Williamsport runs well during seasonal peak flows. Anglers can fish Sugar Creek for smallmouth bass and bluegill with a state license, or use the private lake at Charlarose Lake and Campground. In town, Williamsport Falls sits within a short walk of downtown and is often cited as the tallest free-falling waterfall in Indiana.

The camping season in this part of Indiana runs primarily from April through October. Turkey Run State Park, its campground, and the Turkey Run Inn stay open year-round, though some activities and services are reduced in winter. Shades State Park is open for day use year-round, but overnight camping is seasonal, with no overnight camping from November through March. Private parks such as Charlarose Lake and Campground operate on a similar April to early-November window. Fall is the peak booking period. Sugar Creek's canyons hold color into mid- and late October, and weekend sites at Turkey Run fill well in advance. Summer weekends also fill quickly, especially at electric loops. Spring brings wildflowers and higher creek flows that make ladder trails slick and stream crossings deeper, so waterproof footwear is worth packing. Winter camping is possible at Turkey Run but with limited services. Snow and ice storms are typical, and thunderstorms with hail or tornado risk are common from late spring through summer.

Turkey Run's campground has 213 Class A electric sites, modern bathhouses with hot showers, flush toilets, drinking water, and a dump station. There are no water or sewer hookups at individual sites. Most sites are back-in and can accommodate a range of rig sizes; wooded perimeter sites offer more privacy while central loops are more open. A camp store near the campground sells firewood and basic supplies. Shades State Park is more rustic. Its campground has 105 non-electric drive-in sites and a dump station, plus 7 hike-in backpack sites and 10 canoe-in sites along Sugar Creek. Quiet hours at Indiana state parks run from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., generators may only be run from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and collecting firewood inside the parks is prohibited. Firewood is available for purchase on site.
