Campgrounds and RV parks near Yorktown, IN

Mounds State Park is the closest natural draw. Six hiking trails totaling over 5 miles range from an easy wheelchair-accessible loop around the mounds to rugged terrain through ravines and along limestone bluffs overlooking the White River. The nature center provides displays on the mounds and the surrounding ecosystem, and the White River borders the park with shoreline fishing. Summit Lake is the water-recreation option. There is excellent fishing for bass, crappie, yellow perch, channel catfish, walleye and sunfish, and boat rentals are available including paddle boats, row boats and canoes. The swimming beach is open Memorial Day through Labor Day with a modern bathhouse, four hiking trails run easy to moderate, and three boat ramps are available for launching. The entire lake is idle-speed only. In town, the International Aeromodeling Center hosts national model-aviation events, and Muncie adds the Minnetrista Museum and Ball State University attractions for rainy afternoons.

The core camping season runs from late spring through mid-fall. The swimming beach at Summit Lake is open Memorial Day through Labor Day with a modern bathhouse, which sets the peak-demand window for lakefront sites. Weekends and holidays fill early, and popular waterfront sites at Summit Lake and shaded loops at Mounds book weeks ahead. Spring can be wet. Ground stays soft after storms, and low-lying sites near the White River or Summit Lake may sit in standing water for a day or two after heavy rain. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel: warm days, cool nights, and lighter reservation pressure once schools resume. Winter operations shift substantially. Indiana state park water is typically turned off from November through mid-March or April, so any December through March trip should confirm which loops remain open and what services are available. A limited number of sites at each state park stay available year-round for reservations, and many sites remain first-come, first-served from November through April. Private parks along the White River corridor typically stay open year-round with reduced amenities.

At Mounds State Park, the family campground has 75 electric sites with 30 and 50 amp service, plus youth tent areas. Pets are welcome on a six-foot leash. Big rigs should book well in advance to reserve one of the pull-through sites; the rest are back-in. A dump station, a modern showerhouse in the center of the RV area, and water accessible near every site round out the amenities. At Summit Lake, all campsites have electric and water hookups with modern comfort stations. Sites split between an open loop with level pads and a wooded loop with some slope, and lakefront sites are the first to sell out. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Muncie RV Resort offers full-hookup RV sites with pull-through access close to I-69. Expect a mix of transient and seasonal residents and quiet country surroundings along the river.
