Camping near Zanesville, Indiana
Zanesville sits in northeast Indiana at the border of Allen and Wells counties, about fifteen miles south of Fort Wayne. The area is farmland and small river valleys, and the closest public camping is clustered around the Wabash River near Bluffton and a handful of private RV parks on the outskirts of Bluffton and Huntington.
Options run from full-hookup private grounds to a state-run park with electric sites. Camp Timber Lake and Blue Lake Resort Campground handle family-oriented private stays, while Ouabache State Park sits along the Wabash River near Bluffton, roughly 40 miles from Fort Wayne. Kil-So-Quah State Recreation Area, in the J.E. Roush Lake Fish and Wildlife Area near Huntington, closed indefinitely on June 29, 2026, so the surrounding lake remains available for day use only.
For RV renters, the Bluffton / Fort Wayne South KOA Journey is the most turnkey base. This year-round KOA accommodates RVs up to 90 feet with full hookups, operates on a reservation system, and welcomes pets. Ouabache leans toward electric-only service with a central dump station.
Things to do near Zanesville
Ouabache State Park is the main draw. The Wells County park features camping, picnicking, hiking, and boating and fishing on Kunkel Lake, plus a 20-acre American bison exhibit in a natural setting. A paved bike trail starts near the campground and connects to a pathway along the Wabash River, extending into nearby Bluffton, and a fire tower offers climbing for a park overview.
J. Edward Roush Lake still offers day-use boating, fishing, and shoreline access even with the Kil-So-Quah campground closed. Motorized boats launch from the concrete ramp off S.R. 224, no launch permit required, and shoreline anglers can target largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish. Fort Wayne, about a half hour north, offers the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, the Rivergreenway trail system, and family dining as a rain-day backup.
At the Bluffton / Fort Wayne South KOA, on-site amenities include full-service RV sites, cabins, tent sites, a heated pool, horseshoes, a volleyball court, a playground, and walking trails.

Peak camping runs mid-May through early October, when Ouabache is fully staffed and private grounds run full activity schedules. The average last spring freeze at Fort Wayne is late April and the first fall freeze is in mid-October, so shoulder-season trips can still see frost overnight. Summer weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day book out earliest.
Summer weather is warm and humid with pop-up storms. Fort Wayne averages 39 thunderstorm days per year, most from May to August, with measurable precipitation on about 132 days. Mid-winter through early spring is the wettest time of year, and autumn is the driest. That makes September and early October a strong window for RV travel: cooler nights, fewer bugs, and less rain.
Winter camping is limited. Ouabache State Park stays open year-round and the Bluffton KOA runs year-round with full hookups available November through April, though units must use a heated water supply line during those months.

This was not just another camper rental. This was a true Air BnB experience. The trailer was immaculate and didn't miss a beat all weekend. The back patio area was amazing and trailer was spotless. Melissa and her husband crossed the t's and dotted all the i's on this rental from top to bottom: from communication, to drop off and pick up, everything was as smooth as could be. A great experience that we will definitely rent again one day!

How to book near Zanesville
Indiana state parks, including Ouabache, are reserved through the Indiana DNR system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for today and up to six months in advance, so competitive summer weekends should be locked in as soon as the six-month window opens.
Kil-So-Quah is no longer bookable. The Indiana DNR closed the Kil-So-Quah Recreation Area campground indefinitely on June 29, 2026, citing public safety and maintenance needs. The remainder of J.E. Roush Lake Fish and Wildlife Area stays open for day use.
For Bluffton / Fort Wayne South KOA Journey, book direct through KOA online, the KOA app, or by phone. Cancellations require notice before published deadlines to receive a refund of the deposit, less an administrative cancellation fee, and short-term RV and tent sites require seven days' notice. Private grounds such as Camp Timber Lake and Blue Lake Resort Campground handle their own booking directly.
What to expect on the ground
Site quality varies by operator. The Bluffton KOA offers long pull-throughs up to 90 feet with full electric, water, and sewer hookups suited to larger rigs, while Ouabache is mostly electric-only with a central dump station. At Ouabache, reservations are recommended, especially during busy seasons and weekends, and the campground has 122 electric sites split across two loops.
A few practical notes: alcohol is prohibited in all Indiana State Parks, including Ouabache, and the park regulates firewood to prevent invasive insects, so purchase firewood locally or at the park camp store. A vehicle entrance permit is required at the gate or park office. At the Bluffton KOA, campers should prepare for train noise, as locomotives pass nearby overnight, and the heated pool runs Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
