Campgrounds and RV parks near Princeton, IA

The two rivers drive the itinerary. On the Mississippi, RV travelers use campground boat ramps for fishing, powerboating, and cruising the Great River Road. Camp Hauberg provides a boat ramp and boat slips for river activities, and a bike and walking path runs along Highway 84 following the Great River Road route. On the Rock River, tubing is the signature activity. Lundeen's Landing Campground and Tube Rentals runs 4-mile and 8-mile tube trips, with kayak and canoe rentals for those who want to move faster. Anglers target bass, catfish, and panfish from riverfront sites at Lundeen's Rock River Landing and Sun Retreats Rock River. Inland, Geneseo Campground sits directly on the Hennepin Canal. The historic canal offers kayaking, canoeing, and biking directly from the campground, and anglers fish it for bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish.

The camping season in the Princeton area runs roughly April through October, matching regional river access and campground operating windows. Lundeen's Landing operates April through October, with boat ramp and dock use included with stays from April to Halloween, and Geneseo Campground is open April 1 through October 31. Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year for eastern Iowa, with frequent thunderstorms and elevated Mississippi and Rock River levels that can affect low-lying riverfront sites. Summer is the peak booking window. July and August bring warm, humid conditions with average highs near 82 degrees Fahrenheit, ideal for tubing and swimming but also the season when mosquitoes and biting flies pick up. Campers should come prepared for insect pressure through late summer. Fall offers cooler nights, lower crowds, and reliable fishing on both rivers. Rentals at Geneseo Campground run through the end of October, so early-fall trips still catch water access. Winter camping is very limited; most private parks close or shift to seasonal-only occupancy.

Sites in this area lean toward relaxed, family-run river parks rather than resort-style destinations. Expect a mix of transient and seasonal campers, gravel or grass pads, and pull-through options at the larger properties. Geneseo Campground's RV sites offer 30- and 50-amp electric with water and sewer connections on most sites, and Lundeen's provides 30/50 pull-thru sites, boat docks, and canoe, kayak, and tube rentals. Amenities are practical: dump stations, camp stores stocking ice and firewood, shower houses, and Wi-Fi at most properties. Bathrooms can be a walk from riverside sites at Lundeen's, and quality varies by property. Road access is straightforward from I-80 and the Great River Road, but rigs should watch for low clearances on some approach routes and follow posted truck routes rather than GPS shortcuts.
