Campgrounds and RV parks near Caney, KS

Elk City Reservoir is the main draw. The reservoir offers fishing for channel catfish, white bass, crappie, flathead catfish, largemouth bass, and saugeye. Boat ramps, a swim beach, and a three-lane launch at the state park make it easy to get on the water. Hikers and mountain bikers have several options within Elk City State Park, including the Eagle Rock Mountain Bike Trail, the Post-Oak and Green Thumb Nature Trails, the Table Mound Hiking Trail, and the Osage Lowlands Hiking Trail. The nearby Elk River Hiking Trail runs 15 miles from the west end of the dam to the US-160 bridge over the Elk River south of Elk City. Families also visit the Little House on the Prairie replica cabin south of Independence and the small-animal zoo in town for lower-key day trips.

Southeast Kansas has four distinct seasons with a long, hot summer. Late spring and early summer bring the highest rainfall and the strongest thunderstorm activity, so RV travelers should watch severe-weather forecasts and be ready to shelter. Rising lake levels after heavy rain can affect low-lying loops at Elk City Reservoir. Peak camping runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, with holiday weekends filling first at Elk City State Park's Prairie Meadow and Timber Road loops. Summer weekends can book out well in advance for hookup sites, while shoulder-season weekdays in April, May, September, and October usually offer wider availability at both state park and private options like Bell RV Village, Riverside RV Resort and Campground, and Buckeye RV Park. Fall is a strong window for cooler weather, foliage in the oak-hickory woodlands, and continued fishing. The adjacent wildlife area holds white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, cottontail, gray squirrel, and prairie chicken, and hunting seasons draw additional traffic in late fall. Winter camping is possible at private parks year-round, though some state park amenities such as showers and water spigots may be winterized.

Expect a mix of open prairie and wooded shoreline. Dense oak and hickory woodlands meet rolling meadows of big bluestem and Indian grass on the east shore of Elk City Reservoir, with views ranging from open prairie to wooded hills and limestone bluffs. The compact park layout allows quick access to boat ramps, the swim beach, camping loops, playgrounds, and hiking trails. RV sites at Elk City State Park are generally well shaded, with a range of pad types and mostly water-and-electric hookups. Conveniently located restrooms and shower houses, a group shelter, fishing piers, and a three-lane boat ramp round out the amenities. Cell coverage is generally usable but can be uneven inside the wooded loops. Pets are allowed on leash at state park sites, quiet hours are typically enforced overnight, and summer visitors should plan for heat, humidity, biting insects, and pop-up thunderstorms.
