Campgrounds near Dodge City
Dodge City sits in the high plains of southwest Kansas at the crossroads of US 50, US 400, and US 283, making it a practical overnight or multi-night RV stop for travelers crossing the state or heading toward Colorado. The town is best known as a historic cattle-drive terminus on the Santa Fe Trail, and most nearby camping options cater to a mix of pass-through RVers and families visiting Old West attractions.
Close-in choices are largely private RV parks with full hookups. Dodge City KOA is located downtown in the Historic District, south of Wyatt Earp Blvd, between 4th and 14th Streets on Park Street, next to Long Branch Lagoon Water Park, and offers 20/30/50 amp power, Wi-Fi, cable, full and partial hookup sites, a dump station, laundry, showers, a dog run, and a storm shelter. Gunsmoke RV Park and Red Hills Motel & RV Park round out the in-town options for travelers who want paved sites and quick access to restaurants.
For a more outdoor-oriented stay, Ford State Fishing Lake is located in Ford County, approximately 3 miles north and 5 miles east of Dodge City, and consists of 260 acres of uplands, 10 acres of wetlands, and a 45 acre lake. About half an hour north near Jetmore, HorseThief Reservoir offers water and electric sites, yurts, and a large lake.
Things to do in Dodge City
History drives most Dodge City itineraries. The Boot Hill Museum, Long Branch Saloon reenactments, and the Trail of Fame walking tour are all a short drive or walk from town-center campgrounds. The Dodge City KOA sits downtown in the Historic District, adjoining Long Branch Lagoon water park, City Park and Zoo, and a short walk to Historic Boot Hill, restaurants, and shopping. Families often pair a museum morning with an afternoon at the water park next door.
Outdoor activity clusters around the two nearby lakes. HorseThief Reservoir offers swimming, boating, fishing, jet skiing, and picnicking, plus disc golf, archery, and hiking trails. Ford County State Fishing Lake supports fishing for crappie and channel catfish, has a boat ramp and courtesy dock, and offers unimproved trails for hiking and wildlife observation.

46° / 21°F 16 mmCold, dry, windy; reservoir utility sites first come, first served.
Dodge City has a high-plains steppe climate with hot, windy summers and cold, dry winters. Late spring is the wettest stretch and also the peak severe-weather window, with thunderstorms, large hail, and tornado risk across the region. Travelers should monitor NOAA Weather Radio and confirm where the campground storm shelter is located before setting up.
Late spring through early fall is the practical camping season. Reservation demand rises sharply around holiday weekends at reservoir campgrounds. At HorseThief Reservoir, reservations for utility sites are accepted and recommended during summer months, May 1 through September 30, and summer holidays including Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends; October 1 through April 30, utility camping sites are on a first come, first serve basis.
Winter travel is possible but stark. Private RV parks in town stay open, and HorseThief is open for camping 365 days a year and keeps one bathroom open year round. Expect strong winds, blowing dust, and periodic snow or ice. Shoulder months in April, May, September, and October generally deliver the most comfortable conditions.
Booking and reservations
Booking channels vary by campground type. Dodge City KOA takes reservations directly through the KOA website or app, where sites can be filtered by hookup type and rig length. In-town private parks such as Gunsmoke RV Park and Red Hills Motel & RV Park typically accept phone reservations and are worth calling ahead for during rodeo weekends and summer holidays.
HorseThief Reservoir can be booked online through Campspot, with bookings first come first serve October through May. The reservoir office also takes utility camping reservations over the phone.
At Ford State Fishing Lake, camping is allowed only in the designated camping area and vehicles must stay on established roadways. Sites there are primitive and first come, first served, so arriving earlier in the day improves the chance of a level pull-in.
What to expect
In-town RV parks near Dodge City deliver paved or concrete pads, full hookups, and walkable access to restaurants and museums, but limited shade and some train or highway noise. The Dodge City KOA has 12 pull-through sites, 18 full hookup back-in sites, 36 gravel back-in sites with water and electric only, ten two-bedroom cabins, and 19 tent camping sites, with a laundry, showers, camp store, and storm shelter on site.
Reservoir and public-lake options trade amenities for space and quiet. HorseThief has utility campsites with water and electric plus primitive areas, a bathhouse, and a dump station near the entrance. Ford State Fishing Lake provides free primitive camping in a designated area on the western shore, pit toilets are provided but no potable water is available, and fire pits and picnic tables are provided.
Come prepared for wind. Awning use, canopy setup, and satellite alignment can all be tested by the constant plains breeze.

Booking is low risk. RVezy sets one consistent cancellation policy across the platform (hosts do not set their own), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book. After that window, refund amounts step down based on how close you are to your pickup date, with additional protections built in for situations like host cancellations, where guests receive a refund or travel credit. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps rebook or refunds your trip in full. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Dodge City?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching for a pet-friendly RV rental in Dodge City and you will see every rig that allows pets, along with any cleaning fees the host has set. Dodge City is a great dog town too: the Dodge City KOA Journey has a dedicated pet area on the property, and the Santa Fe Trail Tracks site west of town is a fun, leash-friendly walk with real wagon ruts from the 1800s. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, hosts appreciate the heads-up and often share their favorite local pet spots.
koa.com/campgrounds/dodge-city/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Dodge City?
Yes, RV delivery in Dodge City is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you have never towed before. Many hosts will drive the RV to Gunsmoke RV Park, the Dodge City KOA Journey, or even a private property, then level it, hook up water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are set by the host and usually scale with distance, with some offering free local delivery within Dodge City limits. It is the smartest move for first-timers: you skip the highway learning curve and step straight into vacation mode. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy or message the host directly to confirm options and pricing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dodge%20City%2C%20KansasHow far can I drive on my Dodge City RV rental?

Most Dodge City hosts include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage option, which is perfect for a longer road trip. From Dodge City you're within easy reach of some of the Great Plains' best destinations: Wichita is about 150 miles east on US-400, the Cimarron National Grassland is roughly 100 miles southwest, Garden City sits 50 miles west on US-50, and Colorado Springs is a doable 350-mile drive west on US-50. If you're planning an RV road trip from Dodge City out to the Rockies or down to Amarillo, just message the host and ask about an unlimited mileage upgrade before you book.
ksdot.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Dodge City to park my RV?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Dodge City. The Dodge City KOA Journey is the in-town favorite with full hookups, a pet area, and easy access to Boot Hill Museum and Long Branch Lagoon water park. Gunsmoke RV Park, just west of downtown, offers spacious, tree-shaded sites with full hookups. For a lakeside vibe, Horsethief Reservoir sits about an hour northeast near Jetmore with boating and swimming. Meade State Park (about 35 miles south) offers utility sites bookable through the Kansas state parks reservation system. Book the KOA two to three weeks ahead in summer, it fills fast during Dodge City Days in late July.
koa.com/campgrounds/dodge-city/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Dodge City?
Dodge City sits in a semi-arid steppe climate with hot summers and cold, windy winters, so the sweet spots are late April through early June and again from September into mid-October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s and 80s and the prairie evenings cool down beautifully. July and August can push 93°F or hotter, but that's also when Dodge City Days (late July) and the Roundup Rodeo bring the town to life. Winter lows dip into the low 20s°F with occasional snow, so if you're planning a December or January trip, look for a four-season RV with a furnace and heated tanks. Spring travelers should keep an eye on severe weather alerts.
weather.gov/ddc/climatenormalsI'm a first-time renter, how hard is it to drive an RV around Dodge City?
Easier than you'd think. Dodge City is a small town of about 28,000 people with wide, flat streets, almost no traffic outside of school zones, and big, easy parking lots at Boot Hill Museum and Walmart on North 14th Avenue, ideal training ground for someone first time renting an RV. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, the dump valves, and backing technique, and you can text them anytime during the trip with questions. If you're nervous about the bigger Class A and Class C motorhomes, start with a 19 to 25-foot Class B campervan or small travel trailer. You'll be cruising US-50 west to Garden City like a pro by day two.
ksdot.gov/bureaus/burTrafficSaf/reports/reportspdf/dlmanual.pdf.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down on the road in Kansas?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in Dodge City booked on RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the protection plan, so one phone call gets help dispatched whether you are at Boot Hill, parked along US-50, or out near the Cimarron National Grassland. The team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. Your host is also just a message away for quick fixes like a tripped GFCI outlet or a finicky propane regulator. Save the RVezy support contact in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup, it speeds up any roadside call when you need help fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dodge City RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
You can absolutely cross state lines. Dodge City is perfectly positioned for a multi-state RV road trip. Popular routes include US-50 west into Colorado (Pueblo is about 280 miles, Rocky Mountain National Park about 450 miles), US-83 south into the Texas Panhandle (Amarillo is roughly 230 miles), and US-54 into Oklahoma. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage does not extend there. Cross-border trips into Canada are also restricted, so confirm with your host and RVezy support before planning any international leg. Either way, let your host know your planned route, they often have great insider stops to recommend along the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Dodge City?
Fuel is one of the friendlier line items on a Kansas RV trip. Gas prices in southwest Kansas typically run a bit below the national average, and you'll find plenty of easy-in, easy-out stations along US-50, US-54, and US-283. A Class B campervan rental Dodge City visitors love gets 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), a Class C motorhome averages 8 to 12 MPG, a Class A gets 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer lands around 10 to 14 MPG. For a 4-day, 600-mile loop out to Garden City and back through the Cimarron Grassland, plan around $200 to $350 in fuel depending on your rig. Fill up in town before heading west, stations get sparser past Cimarron.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dodge City?
For most of the year, two to three weeks ahead is plenty, Dodge City isn't a high-pressure reservation market like a national park gateway town. But there are three windows where you'll want to book six to eight weeks out: Dodge City Days in late July, the Roundup Rodeo first weekend of August, and holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day). The Dodge City KOA and Gunsmoke RV Park both take reservations directly through their websites or by phone, while Kansas state parks like Meade State Park (35 miles south) use the official Kansas reservation system at ksoutdoors.com. Pro tip: ask for a pull-through site if you're driving a Class A, the back-ins fill up first.
ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks/ReservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Dodge City?
Mostly easy, with one thing to plan around: wind. Dodge City is famously one of the windiest cities in the United States, with average wind speeds around 14 miles per hour and frequent gusts over 30, so high-profile rigs like Class A motorhomes and tall travel trailers can feel pushed around on open stretches of US-50 and US-56. Drive early in the morning when winds are calmer, and pull over at rest areas if a thunderstorm rolls in. Roads are flat, well-maintained, and almost mountain-free, perfect for new RVers. Watch for wildlife (deer and pronghorn) at dusk on rural highways, and during spring storm season check the National Weather Service Dodge City office forecast before heading out.
weather.gov/ddc/What hookups and amenities can I expect at Dodge City campgrounds?
You'll find solid infrastructure at every major park. The Dodge City KOA Journey offers 20/30/50-amp electric, full water and sewer hookups, free Wi-Fi, cable TV, laundry, showers, a dog park, and a tornado-rated storm shelter, a real comfort given Kansas weather. Gunsmoke RV Park has level gravel pads, full hookups, and that 1978 western-hospitality charm. For dumping and fresh water on the road, both in-town parks sell day-use dump access, and most stops along US-50 between Garden City and Dodge City have water fills. If you're boondocking at Ford State Fishing Lake, you'll need to come in with full fresh tanks since there are no hookups, plan a dump stop on your way back into town.
ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks/Locations/MeadeWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Dodge City?
More creature comforts than you might expect. Most rigs available for RV rental in Dodge City sleep 4 to 8 people and come with a queen or king bed, a fully stocked kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning (essential for July highs in the low 90s), a furnace for chilly spring and fall nights, and a dinette that converts to extra sleeping space. Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid power. Larger Class C and Class A motorhomes have seatbelts for multiple passengers. Filter by sleeps count and amenities on RVezy to find the exact match for your family RV trip in Dodge City.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dodge%20City%2C%20KansasWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Dodge City hosts offer genuinely useful extras that make your trip smoother. Common add-ons include kitchen kits, bedding and linens, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, generator rentals for off-grid stays, bike racks, and propane top-off service, with pricing set by each host on their listing. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meet-up point near US-50 or US-400, and many offer delivery straight to your campground. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overage fees set by the host, and some listings offer an unlimited mileage upgrade for longer routes to Colorado or Texas. Confirm pickup time, delivery, and any add-ons in your host message before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dodge%20City%2C%20KansasHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and all happens inside the RVezy platform, never pay your host directly or off-platform. When you book, you pay the trip total (rental, fees, and your chosen protection plan) with a credit or debit card through RVezy's secure checkout. The host also places a refundable security deposit hold on your card before pickup, separate from your booking payment, with the amount based on the RV's size and value. As long as the rig comes back in the condition you picked it up in (clean, undamaged, with the agreed fuel and propane levels), that hold is released after the trip. Do a walkthrough video at pickup and dropoff, it protects everyone and keeps any conversation about damages quick and fair.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Dodge City?
Dodge City is a launchpad for some seriously underrated Great Plains adventures. Head 100 miles southwest to the Cimarron National Grassland for big-sky stargazing and Santa Fe Trail history, drive 50 miles west on US-50 to Garden City's Lee Richardson Zoo and Sandsage Bison Range, or push 230 miles south on US-283/US-54 to Amarillo, Texas, and Palo Duro Canyon (the 'Grand Canyon of Texas'). Wichita is a flat, easy 150 miles east on US-400 with Old Cowtown Museum and great barbecue. For the big trip, Rocky Mountain National Park is about 450 miles west via US-50, a doable 2-day RV drive with an overnight in Lamar or La Junta, Colorado. Map your route with your host's input, they often know the best fuel stops and pull-offs.
