Water recreation is the strongest draw. Cheney Reservoir spans roughly 9,600 surface acres and supports sailing, powerboating, fishing for walleye and wipers, and swimming beaches at West Shore. A trail system of about nine miles runs through the park for mountain biking and walking. Closer to Harper, Anthony Municipal Lake covers 153 acres and allows boating, fishing, hiking, and camping, plus a free public disc golf course and lighted concrete walking trails linking the campground to town. Families often combine a lake day with small-town stops for ice cream, farm-supply browsing, and county museums. Birders visit in fall and spring for waterfowl migration on area reservoirs, and hunters use surrounding public wildlife areas during upland bird seasons.

Peak RV season in south-central Kansas runs from late April through early October, with the busiest weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Lakeside loops at Cheney fill first, and holiday weekends can book out several weeks in advance under required 3 or 4 night minimums. Late spring brings warm days and green pastures but also the strongest storm risk, since Harper County sits in tornado alley and severe thunderstorms are common from April into June. Summer is hot and often humid, with afternoon highs frequently in the 90s and occasional stretches above 100 F. Early mornings and evenings are the best times for hiking and paddling. Fall is many campers' favorite window: temperatures ease, humidity drops, and area reservoirs see migrating waterfowl. Winter camping is possible but limited. At Cheney, water is turned off for the winter at all utility campgrounds, bathrooms, and dump stations, though electric remains available and Smarsh Creek sites 96-115 keep both water and electric.

Expect rural, low-traffic driving with wide shoulders and easy access for larger rigs. Cell coverage is generally solid along US-160, US-54, and I-135, but can thin out on county roads between towns. Grocery runs and fuel are easiest in Harper, Anthony, Kingman, and Wellington. At Cheney, sites accommodate RVs up to 75 feet with full hookups available in select areas, and the park includes 223 electric and water hookup sites along with additional primitive sites, multiple dump stations, and shower houses. Anthony Lake Campground offers 30 and 50 amp electric with water at the site but no on-site sewer or dump station, so plan a dump stop in advance. Wind is a constant factor on the plains, so awnings should be stowed when leaving camp. Ticks and chiggers are active in warm months, and mosquitoes appear near standing water after rain.
