Campgrounds and RV parks near Kiowa, KS

Water recreation anchors most trips. Anthony Lake Campground has a boat ramp, beach, and shoreline fishing on its 153-acre municipal lake, with a nine-hole golf course overlooking the dam. Sandy Beach - Salt Plain State Park adds fishing for catfish, saugeye, sand bass, and hybrid striper, plus paddling and birding around the salty lake and adjacent national wildlife refuge, which supports over 300 protected bird species. Families willing to drive west toward Waynoka can dig for hourglass-shaped selenite crystals in the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge, which is the only place in the world these crystals form. Golden Sands - Little Sahara State Park draws ATV and dune-buggy riders to sand dunes ranging from 25 to 75 feet high. Nearer to town, Rox Landing RV Park and Highway Homestead RV Park serve as quiet bases for stargazing and short drives to local historic sites.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV trips in the Kiowa area. Days warm quickly in March and April, wildflowers show in the Red Hills, and lake campgrounds open up ahead of the summer crowd. Spring also brings the region's severe-weather season, with thunderstorms, hail, and occasional tornadoes possible from April into June, so campers should monitor forecasts and know where storm shelters are located. Summer is hot and often windy, with July highs averaging in the mid-90s Fahrenheit and heat indices frequently topping 100. Water-based sites at Sandy Beach and Anthony Lake fill first on weekends, and Little Sahara sees peak ATV traffic on holiday weekends. Fall brings cooler nights and lower humidity, ideal for longer stays. Winter is cold and generally dry with limited services at some lake parks. Salt Plain State Park is open year-round, but some loops, water lines, and concessions scale back in the coldest months, so it is worth calling ahead before an off-season stop.

Sites in this region trend toward open, grassy, or gravel pads with limited mature shade, so awnings and window covers earn their keep. Full hookups are common at private parks like Rox Landing RV Park and Highway Homestead RV Park. Anthony Lake Campground offers 30- and 50-amp electric plus water, but no on-site sewer or dump station, so plan a stop before or after your stay. At Golden Sands - Little Sahara State Park, RV sites include water, electric, and sewer hookups, and off-road vehicles are required to carry a 10-foot whip topped with a solid orange flag under park rules. Sandy Beach - Salt Plain State Park has electric and water sites, comfort stations with showers, and a dump station. Cell coverage is generally usable in town and along US-160 and US-281, and thinner in the more remote dune and refuge areas.
