Campgrounds and RV parks near Medicine Lodge, KS

The signature drive is the Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway, a two-lane route between Medicine Lodge and Coldwater with rolling hills of native grass, mesas, canyons and buttes, and iron-rich rust-colored soil contrasted by cedar trees and grassland, plus two scenic overlooks. A rougher 22-mile Gyp Hills Scenic Drive loops south of U.S. 160 and returns via Lake City Road, much of it unpaved and best driven in a tow vehicle rather than a motorhome. In town, the Medicine Lodge Stockade and Carry Nation Home cover frontier and temperance history. Anthony Lake, about 40 minutes east, adds picnic tables, playground equipment, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, restrooms and showers, shelter houses, an amphitheater, and a concrete walking path, plus fishing, a swim area, and a boat ramp.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. April and May bring wildflowers across the Red Hills and mild daytime temperatures, though south-central Kansas is also in peak severe-weather season, with thunderstorms, hail, and tornado potential most active from April into June. Rigs should be parked with an eye on shelter access and NWS radar. Summer is hot and humid. July highs commonly reach the low 90s, so sites with shade or full hookups for air conditioning matter more than scenic frontage. Fall, from September into early November, tends to be the most comfortable stretch: warm days, cool nights, lighter storm activity, and open hunting seasons that push local RV demand up on weekends. Winter camping is possible but limited. Small-town parks may reduce services, water risers can freeze during cold snaps, and public sites operate on shorter hours or reduced staffing. Reservation offices for area parks also keep tighter off-season schedules.

This is small-town, rural Kansas. Expect gravel or grass pads, straightforward 30/50-amp hookups, and limited on-site staff rather than resort amenities, pools, or activity programs. Cell coverage in town is generally usable; along the scenic drives and back roads through the Gyp Hills, signal drops quickly. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Medicine Lodge itself, so full provisioning is easy before heading west toward Coldwater or south into open range. Much of the Gyp Hills Scenic Drive runs through open range with no fences to keep cattle off the road, and travelers cross cattle guards on what is a public road. Watch also for selenite crystals that litter road cuts and ditches like broken glass, and narrow shoulders on U.S. 160. Big rigs should note that most in-town parks are compact; longer coaches will find easier maneuvering at Anthony Lake or by choosing pull-through sites when booking.
