Campgrounds and RV parks near Spearville, KS

Water recreation centres on HorseThief Reservoir, which supports boating, swimming, and fishing for largemouth bass, walleye, crappie and catfish, along with kayak, canoe and paddleboard rentals, archery, and hiking trails across the surrounding prairie. Ford County State Fishing Lake is quieter, with shoreline fishing for crappie and channel catfish, a boat ramp, and unimproved trails through timbered creek bottoms and native grasses. No hunting is permitted on the lake property. Dodge City anchors the cultural side of the trip. Boot Hill Museum recreates an Old West street with gunfight re-enactments and historic buildings, and the Gunfighters Wax Museum, Home of Stone Museum, and downtown restaurants are close by. Spearville itself is known for the wind-farm turbines visible for miles across the plains, and the surrounding county roads are popular with cyclists and photographers chasing sunsets.

Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of Kansas. May tends to bring the wettest weather on the calendar, with thunderstorms and occasional severe weather common through June. Summer is hot and often windy, with July highs frequently topping 90 degrees Fahrenheit, so shaded sites and functioning air conditioning matter. HorseThief Reservoir takes utility-site reservations by phone during its summer reservation window, which runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and covers the Independence Day holiday. Outside that window, utility sites are first-come, first-served, and the reservoir stays open for camping year-round. Dodge City KOA and Four Aces RV Park operate year-round, while Gunsmoke RV Park runs an extended season built around the warmer months. Winter travellers should expect cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced services at the smaller and more primitive parks.

Terrain across the region is flat to gently rolling short-grass prairie. Wind is a constant factor, and awnings should often be retracted when leaving the site. Tree cover is limited outside developed parks, so families should plan for sun exposure at midday. Hookup quality varies. Dodge City KOA and Gunsmoke RV Park offer 20, 30 and 50 amp full hookups on gravel or concrete pads, with laundry, showers, a pool at Gunsmoke, and playgrounds on site. HorseThief has utility sites with water and electric plus a smaller number of full-hookup pads. Ford County State Fishing Lake is primitive with vault toilets, fire rings and picnic tables but no potable water, and several sites are not level. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the US 50 corridor. Grocery, fuel and RV supplies are easiest to find in Dodge City.
